UNDER 19 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: Patrickswell travel to Mungret at 7.30pm on Tuesday June 28 in the Premier U-19 Hurling Championship.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell lost an epic City League semi-final against hosts Na Piarsaigh on penalties. The Caherdavin men raced into an early lead with three straight points before Calvin Carroll registered Patrickswell’s first point. Na Piarsaigh extended their lead to 0-8 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes, but Kevin O’Brien and Jonathan McMahon turned the tide with a pair of goals. Patrickswell were suddenly ahead by 2-5 to 0-9 in the 23rd minute. Na Piarsaigh had the better of the closing minutes of the first half and they reached half-time at just 0-13 to 2-6 ahead.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw both clubs hit four points apiece and Na Piarsaigh holding onto a narrow 0-17 to 2-10 lead. In a devastating five-minute spell, Patrickswell raced ahead with five points courtesy of Jason Gillane 0-2, John Kirby 0-2 and Calvin Carroll. There were ten minutes left and Patrickswell were 2-15 to 0-17 ahead. Unfortunately Na Piarsaigh showed their mettle and forced extra time with a dogged finish to the game. Their six points overshadowed Patrickswell’s two points and the sides were inseparable at 2-17 to 0-23.

Na Piarsaigh edged the first period of extra time. Their goal with two points exceeded Patrickswell’s haul of four points. At half-time in extra time, Na Piarsaigh led narrowly by 1-25 to 2-21. In the second period, both sides traded two points before Calvin Carroll nailed a last minute free to seal a 2-24 to 1-27 draw. Spectators gathered around one goalmouth to witness the unusual spectacle of a penalty shootout. Na Piarsaigh were more accurate and won the shootout by 4-3.

INTERCOUNTY HURLERS: Congratulations to Limerick and its Patrickswell contingent for securing another Munster Championship after the stiffest test from Clare.

CLUB LOTTO: The Club Lotto draw on Monday May 30 was not won. The numbers drawn were 6, 23, 25 and 32. The bonus number was 20. The €100 Lucky Dip was won by Bernard O’Riordan and the €20 prizes were claimed by Teresa Griffin, Theresa Considine, Kathleen Browne, Shane Cullinane and Jim Mulqueen. This week’s jackpot is €15,400.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior Hurlers played out an entertaining draw away to Monaleen in the final group match of the City League. After ten minutes, the teams were level at 0-3 apiece (Calvin Carroll 0-2 and John Kirby). When the hosts crept ahead with a fourth point, Jason Gillane’s 140 yard puckout eluded the Monaleen goalkeeper for a goal. Patrickswell were further ahead at 1-7 to 0-7 by the 20th minute due to points from Jack Kelleher, Thomas Nolan and Calvin Carroll 0-2. The closing stages of the first half witnessed a further exchange of four points each, with Calvin Carroll notching three scores and John Kirby contributing another. The half-time score was 1-11 to 0-11.

Monaleen were dominant in the first 15 minutes of the second half, outscoring Patrickswell by eight points to one. John O’Meara’s men found themselves 0-19 to 1-12 behind and needed to respond. There was a flurry of points in a five-minute spell as Patrickswell narrowed the gap slightly to 0-22 to 1-16 (John Kirby, Darragh Ahern and Calvin Carroll 0-2). Remarkably, the visitors equalised within two minutes due to a brace from the ever-accurate Calvin Carroll and another point from Jack Kelleher. The scoreline in the 55th minute was 1-19 to 0-22. The teams traded points, before John Kirby appeared to put Patrickswell in the box seat with a goal to make it 2-20 to 0-23. The lead was short-lived as Monaleen produced a goal within thirty seconds and followed up with two points. On the cusp of normal time, the ‘Well trailed by 1-25 to 2-20. The big decision was about aiming for goal or hoping for adequate time for points. Calvin Carroll scored a point in the 62nd minute and Mark Carmody snatched the 2-22 to 1-25 draw in the 64th minute. Patrickswell face Na Piarsaigh in the City semi-final on Thursday June 2 at 7.00pm in Caherdavin.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: The Junior B hurlers secured an excellent away win in Doon in the City East League. The opening ten minutes were played at a ferocious tempo as the teams exchanged four points apiece. The home team scored their opening goal, but Patrickswell drew level at 0-7 to 1-4 by virtue of three consecutive points. By the 25th minute, the teams were still inseparable at 0-10 to 1-7. The ‘Well edged the closing stages of the first half to lead by 0-13 to 1-8 at the interval.

The second half began competitively with a further exchange of four points apiece in ten minutes. Patrickswell extended their lead to four points at 0-19 to 1-12 by the 45th minute with a brace of points. The match was back in the balance when Doon scored their second goal and moved within a point of Patrickswell. By the 56th minute, the scores were level again at 0-21 to 2-15. Thankfully Patrickswell slotted over two points in quick succession and restricted Doon to a solitary point before the final whistle. The final score was a 0-23 to 2-16 victory.

INTER-COUNTY HURLERS: Commiserations to the Patrickswell contingent of Patrick Kirby and John Kirby for pushing Kilkenny so close in the All-Ireland U-20 Hurling Final. We are proud of your achievements, which yielded a Munster title.

CLUB LOTTO: The Club Lotto draw on Wednesday May 18 was not won. The numbers drawn were 10, 22, 26 and 31. The bonus number was 8. The €100 Lucky Dip was won by Jackie O’Carroll and the €20 prizes were claimed by Tara O’Connell, Elve Vahenomm, Liam Justin, Richard Bennis and Luke O’Connor. This week’s jackpot is €15,000.

CARRIE GILLANE CLANCY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT: The Carrie Gillane Clancy Memorial Tournament takes place on Saturday May 28 at 2.00pm. Patrickswell will be joined by camogie teams from Mungret, Monaleen and Ballybrown. Refreshments will be available on the day and there will be a signed Limerick jersey for the ‘Guess the Score’ competition.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: Patrickswell earned a hard-fought draw against Na Piarsaigh at home. The ‘Well led by 0-4 to 0-1 by the tenth minute; however Na Piarsaigh roared back with three consecutive points in two minutes. Over the next ten minutes, the sides traded two points apiece. The Caherdavin men hit the front with a goal to make it 1-6 to 0-6. Patrickswell dominated the closing minutes of the first half to trail by a solitary point at 1-7 to 0-9 at half-time.

The second half began with a flurry of Patrickswell goals. Paul O’Brien smashed home the first goal and then he used one hand on the hurl to drive home his second goal. The goals were followed by another point. By the 40th minute, the ‘Well were 2-10 to 1-7 ahead. Na Piarsaigh replied with three straight points and then the teams exchanged three points apiece in a high-scoring spell. There were ten minutes left and Patrickswell led by 2-13 to 1-13. Na Piarsaigh equalised with their second goal and the match ended with a 2-14 to 2-14 draw.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: The Intermediate hurlers were beaten 3-16 to 3-12 away to Doon.

INTER-COUNTY HURLERS: Congratulations to Diarmaid Byrnes for his performance with Limerick against Clare in the fourth match of the Munster Championship.

CLUB LOTTO: The Club Lotto draw on Monday May 9 was not won. The numbers drawn were 3, 28, 29 and 31. The bonus number was 12. The €100 Lucky Dip was won by Patrick Kirby and the €20 prizes were claimed by Michael Hogan, Mary McCarthy, Paul O’Neill, Mary O’Neill and Marian Burke. This week’s jackpot is €14,800.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers were narrowly beaten at home by neighbours Ballybrown in the City Senior Hurling League. The visitors went two points ahead before Cian Gorman registered Patrickswell’s opening point of the match. Ballybrown led by 0-5 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes, but the following eight minutes were dominated by the ‘Well as Cian Enright (0-2), John Flynn and Seanie O’Brien equalised at 0-6 apiece by the 23rd minute. Ballybrown increased their tempo and they were rewarded by six additional points before the interval. At half-time, the Clarina men were 0-12 to 0-7 ahead.

At the start of the second half, Ballybrown outscored the ‘Well by six points to two points before the 40th minute. Patrickswell had an uphill task at 0-18 to 0-9 in arrears. Remarkably, Thomas O’Brien led a dramatic recovery that yielded eight points in eight minutes (Thomas O’Brien 0-4, Kevin O’Brien, John Flynn, Thomas Nolan and Cian Enright). The home team were merely two points adrift at 0-19 to 0-17 in the 50th minute. Despite the momentum behind them, Patrickswell succumbed to a Ballybrown goal and point to trail by six points at 1-20 to 1-17. The game was thrown back into the melting pot when Seanie O’Brien’s goal was sandwiched by two more Patrickswell points. On the cusp of injury time, John O’Meara’s men were only one point behind at 1-20 to 1-19. The grandstand finale did not materialise and Ballybrown clinically finished the match with four unanswered points to claim a 1-24 to 1-19 away win.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered defeat at home to Ballybrown, despite a whirlwind start. The ‘Well raced into a 2-3 to 0-1 lead after just twelve minutes when David Woulfe and Gavin Carey struck the net. Ballybrown dominated the next seven minutes with a haul of one goal and three points without response.  Patrickswell extended their advantage to three points with Jonathan McMahon’s point, but the scoreline was damaged by Ballybrown’s second and third goals before the break. The half-time score was 3-5 to 2-5 in Ballybrown’s favour.

Patrickswell made a good start to the second half by scoring two points in a minute to slash the deficit to a single point. However, the door was slammed in their face when Ballybrown claimed a fourth goal and a fresh point in sixty seconds. There were 35 minutes elapsed and the visitors were five points ahead at 4-6 to 2-7. The teams exchanged two points apiece, before Ballybrown plundered another goal and two points in a three-minute flurry to effectively decide the contest. Chasing a ten-point gap at 5-10 to 2-9, Patrickswell continued to search for a way back.  Five straight points from the ‘Well trimmed the deficit to five points, but Ballybrown crushed the recovery with two late goals and a point to run out 7-11 to 2-14 winners.

INTER-COUNTY HURLERS: Congratulations to the Patrickswell contingent of Diarmaid Byrnes and Aaron Gillane for winning with Limerick against Tipperary in the third match of the Munster Championship. Well done to John and Patrick Kirby on their great success in winning the Munster U-20 Championship title.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers edged out hosts Mungret in a match that swung from team to team. Patrickswell began the game on the front foot as Kevin O’Brien’s goal and four additional points established a 1-4 to 0-0 cushion after just ten minutes. Mungret recovered from the early setback to rattle Patrickswell with a seven-point haul before the 20th minute. The whirlwind beginning to the game abated as both teams traded two points apiece (Calvin Carroll and Mark Carmody) before the 30th minute. On the cusp of half-time, Cian Enright’s point and Cian Gorman’s close-range goal gave Patrickswell a 2-7 to 0-9 interval lead.

After one point apiece at the start of the second half, Patrickswell devastated Mungret with a flurry of a goal and five points in eight minutes. Seanie O’Brien anticipated a lofted sixty-yard cross to volley home a goal with consummate skill. The spectators assumed the result was in little doubt as Patrickwell held a twelve-point lead of 3-13 to 0-10 in the 43rd minute. Mungret had different ideas and started to chip away at the deficit. Over the next ten minutes, the home team outscored the ‘Well by six points to one point. The arrears were trimmed to seven points at 3-14 to 0-16. While Calvin Carroll scored another point, Mungret clawed back another four points in four minutes. There were four points separating the teams in stoppage time. Kevin O’Brien’s insurance point cemented the Patrickswell victory before Mungret scored the final point. The result was a 3-16 to 0-21 triumph for John O’Meara’s men.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: The Junior B hurlers secured a worthy draw in Caherline.  It was a topsy-turvy game, where Patrickswell could have lost, but almost won! The teams were inseparable after fifteen minutes with three points apiece. An unfortunate own goal put the hosts ahead and Caherline pushed ahead by 1-5 to 0-4 in the 20th minute. Patrickswell increased their tempo and secured four points in six minutes to reach half-time level at 0-8 to 1-5.

Unfortunately, Caherline notched their second goal within thirty seconds of the restart. Over the next twenty minutes, Patrickswell and Caherline produced six points each. The ‘Well could not close the gap as every point was responded in kind. By the 55th minute, Patrickswell trailed by three points at 2-11 to 0-14. It was evident that a goal was the only way to unseat Caherline. Paul Bennis obliged with a decisive goal to equalise in the 59th minute. Sam McNamara’s late free put Patrickswell in touching distance of a hard-fought victory, but Caherline forced a last-minute free along the touchline. The home club player held his nerve and equalised with a long-range stroke. At the final whistle, Patrickswell went home with a 1-15 to 2-12 draw.

CLUB LIMERICK DRAW: Congratulations to Fr. Mike Cussen, who scooped a €500 prize in the April Club Limerick Draw.

The €100 Lucky Dip was won by Linda & Sean O’Grady and the €20 prizes were claimed by Helen O’Donoghue, Doris Cusack, Robert Graham, MIchael Coughlan and Shreya Kumar. This week’s jackpot is €14,400.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: The Intermediate hurlers faced a busy week with two matches in three days. On the visit to Claughaun, Peter Harty put Patrickswell ahead with two points in the opening ten minutes. Claughaun struck back with a goal and four points to surge ahead by five points after twenty minutes. The rest of the first half saw the teams share two points apiece and Patrickswell trailed by 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval.

In the opening segment of the second half, both sides scored a point before Patrickswell burst to life with a goal (Gavin Carey) and three points without reply. There was fifteen minutes left and the ‘Well led by 1-8 to 1-7. There were three more points each before the match entered stoppage time with Patrickswell still ahead by 1-11 to 1-10. Unfortunately, the concession of three frees during injury time cost the visitors deeply. Claughaun snatched a 1-13 to 1-11 victory at the death.

Against Crecora away, Cian Enright scored a point within seconds of the first whistle. Our hosts responded with three points, but Patrickswell bounced back with a string of five unanswered points. The score after fifteen minutes was 0-6 to 0-3 in our favour. Crecora put the ‘Well on the back foot with a salvo of a goal and two points in a short three-minute window. The remainder of the first half was relatively even as Crecora reached the break 1-6 to 0-8 ahead.

Crecora dominated the opening phase of the second half and outscored Patrickswell by six points to one point before the 40th minute. The ‘Well now trailed by six points at 1-12 to 0-9. When Patrickswell reduced the deficit to four points, the home team finally slammed the door with a goal and point within sixty seconds. There were ten minutes left and we trailed by 2-13 to 0-11. The final stages were low scoring and both teams only managed another point each.

CON AND ANNIE KIRBY MEMORIAL STAKES: The Camogie Club were delighted that their nominated greyhound, Magical Kuba, won second place in the final of the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial. Sponsored by the McManus family, this is a very generous gesture of support to Limerick GAA and Camogie clubs.

LIMERICK HURLERS: Congratulations to Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes for their role in Limerick’s great victory over Waterford. Additionally, well done to Aaron for being awarded Centra Man of the Match. We wish Cian the best for his speedy recovery from injury.

CAMOGIE FEILE: The Camogie girls battled magnificently and chalked up large wins over Newcastle West and St. Aibhes. Unfortunately, the girls were defeated by a strong Templeglantine team.

MEMBERSHIP: Club membership is now due for 2022. Every player, both adult and youth, must be a registered member to train and play for the club. It is mandatory for insurance purposes. Non-playing members are also invited to renew. You can pay your membership fee online at foireann.ie or returntoplay.gaa.ie. The most common types are Adult €60, Juvenile €40 and Family €120. There will also be in-person membership clinics.
