UNDER 21 HURLERS: The U-21 hurlers bowed out of the Premier Championship after two matches in four days. Against Na Piarsaigh, the game was finely balanced at 0-4 apiece after fifteen minutes. Patrickswell were ahead by 1-6 to 0-6 at the break. Na Piarsaigh clawed their way back into the contest and the scores were level once again at 1-11 apiece with fifteen minutes to play. Unfortunately the Caherdavin men shaded the final quarter and won by 2-15 to 1-14.

In the last pool match against Ballybrown, Patrickswell found themselves three points adrift after just two minutes. By the 10th minute, Patrick Kirby had slashed the deficit to 0-4 to 0-3. Our neighbours steamed ahead with an unanswered goal and three more points before Cian O’Gorman registered a point. The ‘Well trailed by 1-7 to 0-4 after twenty minutes. Ballybrown scored another three points without reply, but Patrickswell had the better of the closing exchanges to trail by 1-12 to 0-8 at half-time.

Both teams exchanged a trio of points in the first ten minutes of the second half (Patrick Kirby 0-2 and Cian O’Gorman). When Ballybrown struck another three points, John Kirby popped up with a goal. JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered late heartbreak during the last minute of extra time against Drom-Broadford in the County Championship semi-final. The ‘Well led narrowly by 0-6 to 0-5 after ten minutes (Adam Carrig, Barry Foley, Cian O’Gorman and Eoin Harmon 0-3). Drom-Broadford scored their first goal and another point before a rapid response from Jamie Dillon and Jonathan McMahon. At the quarter mark, the Well trailed by 1-6 to 0-8. Patrickswell were then held scoreless for ten minutes and our opponents added a second goal and three points. There were two points apiece traded before half time, resulting in a deficit of 2-11 to 0-10.

Patrickswell trimmed the deficit slightly by the 40th minute at 2-13 to 0-13 before Josh Carey’s goal brought Patrickswell into contention. Unfortunately Drom-Broadford were two goals ahead within minutes after a fortuitous third goal and still led by 3-16 to 1-17 by the 50th minute. Remarkably, Patrickswell locked out Drom-Broadford for the final ten minutes and equalised with points from Cian O’Gorman, Jonathan McMahon, Eoin Harmon 0-2 and Paul Bennis. The normal time score was 1-22 to 3-16.

Patrickswell made a flying start to extra time and reached half-time ahead by three points at 1-27 to 3-18 (Cian O’Gorman 0-2, Eoin Harmon, Sam McNamara and Jonathan McMahon). However, Drom-Broadford surged ahead with a fourth goal and another point. Eoin Harmon had to save the day with a last minute equaliser. The thought of a penalty shootout was on everyone’s mind, but Drom-Broadford won a late free from 50 yards. Their player held his nerve to slot home a 4-20 to 1-28 winner.

UNDER 21 HURLERS: Patrickswell secured a late draw against Mungret in the first match of the Premier Championship. Mungret scored two points in the first minute, but Patrickswell surged ahead with seven points in ten minutes (Patrick Kirby 0-6 and John Kirby). Both sides exchanged six points apiece in the remainder of the first half, but Patrickswell lost Patrick Kirby on the stroke of half-time. The interval score was 0-13 to 0-8.

Eoin Harmon’s five frees kept Patrickswell ahead by 0-19 to 0-15 by the 40th minute. Mungret were turning the screw and rocked Patrickswell with a salvo of a goal and four points with no reply in five minutes. We trailed by 1-19 to 0-19 with five minutes left. The teams traded two points apiece and the scoreline read 1-21 to 0-21 in stoppage time. With one last attack, Eoin Harmon lofted a shot that evaded the Mungret defence and crept into the net. Patrickswell secured a deserved draw.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell bowed out of the Senior Hurling Championship after a defeat to South Liberties in the quarter-final. South Liberties were two points ahead after five minutes, but Patrickswell took charge with six consecutive points in fifteen minutes (Josh Considine, Diarmaid Byrnes, Aaron Gillane, Jack Kelleher 0-2 and Tom O’Brien). However, Patrickswell failed to score in the next ten minutes while South Liberties notched two points. Thankfully Aaron Gillane and Seanie O’Brien added two further points before South Liberties secured the last point of the first half. The interval score was 0-8 to 0-5.

South Liberties struck the first point of the second half, although Aaron Gillane responded within minutes. Two more points from our opponents put them slightly behind at 0-9 to 0-8 in the 38th minute. While Kevin O’Brien increased the buffer to two points, South Liberties delivered a devastating blow with a well-taken goal in the 45th minute. The Patrickswell lean spell of twelve minutes ended when Diarmaid Byrnes equalised at 0-11 to 1-8 in the 50th minute. Over the course of the next ten minutes, South Liberties outscored the ‘Well by two points to establish a 1-11 to 0-12 lead. There were nine additional minutes of injury time and the tension was high. Diarmaid Byrnes’ point was cancelled out by South Liberties, then Aaron Gillane reduced the deficit to a single point. However, South Liberties were unfazed and scored another point to win the match 1-13 to 0-14.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: There were dramatic scenes in the County quarter-final as Patrickswell snatched an unbelievable late win against a distraught Doon team. Patrickswell led by 0-3 to 0-1 in the tenth minute (Eoin Harmon, Jamie Dillon and Gavin Carey), but Doon plundered a goal and four points without reply in twelve minutes. The pendulum swung back to Patrickswell with a salvo of four points in five minutes (Eoin Harmon, Adam Carrig and Cian Enright 0-2). However Doon added two more points. At half-time, the East Men led by 1-7 to 0-7.

Eoin Harmon’s brace of points slashed the arrears to a single score, but the ‘Well failed to score for fifteen minutes as Doon turned the screw with a second goal and two points. By the 50th minute, Patrickswell were 2-9 to 0-9 behind. The next ten minutes were low scoring and Patrickswell reached injury time significantly adrift at 2-10 to 0-11. Patrickswell threw caution to the wind and played short balls into the forward line. Pa Mann hit the net from ten yards out in the 62nd minute to set up a grandstand finale. In the 66th minute, a 65’ was lofted into the night sky. Josh Carey leapt higher than the Doon defence and swept the sliotar beautifully into the Doon goal from a height. Our opponents were shattered, but there was still a minute to play. Patrickswell held out and recorded a famous escape.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: The Junior B hurlers season came to an end after defeat to Kildimo-Pallaskenry in the City Championship semi-final. Despite Sam McNamara and Aidan Scanlon putting the ‘Well ahead by 0-2 to 0-1 after ten minutes, Kildimo-Pallaskenry outscored the hosts by nine points to one point across the remainder of the first half. The interval scoreline was 0-10 to 0-3.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half were keenly contested as Patrickswell cancelled out the visitors with three points apiece (William O’Dea 0-2 and Sam McNamara). Heading into the final quarter, Patrickswell remained seven points adrift at 0-13 to 0-6. Des Foley’s point was countered and Patrickswell reached the 57th minute still behind by seven points. When a penalty was awarded, Des Foley smashed the sliotar through the packed Kildimo-Pallaskenry defensive line. Patrickswell were now four points behind, but the visitors secured another point to move five points ahead. In the 60th minute, Paul O’Brien scored a close-range goal to rattle Kildimo-Pallaskenry and breathe new hope into the ‘Well. Unfortunately, the visitors notched an insurance point to move 0-16 to 2-7 ahead. In the depths of stoppage time, Des Foley’s ferocious shot rattled the goal frame and spun agonisingly away. The final whistle sounded and Patrickswell were short.
