UNDER 19 HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered defeat in their second Championship match away to Newcastle West. The hosts scored their first goal after just twenty seconds and added a point in the second minute. Eoin Harmon registered the first Patrickswell point in the sixth minute; however Newcastle West accrued another two points to establish a 1-3 to 0-1 lead by the 10th minute. Seconds later, Patrick Kirby beat his marker in the corner and made a determined run towards the goal from a tight angle. His low shot surprised the goalkeeper and nestled in the net. There were no more scores by either team in the subsequent ten minutes, but Patrick Kirby scored a pair of points to equalise at 1-3 apiece in the 20th minute. The home team’s second goal stifled the revival and a follow-up point gave them a 2-4 to 1-3 lead. Patrick Kirby and Eoin Harmon mustered points to trim the deficit to two points before Newcastle West scored the final point of the first half. At the interval, the ‘Well trailed by 2-5 to 1-5.

The second half started poorly for Patrickswell as Newcastle West virtually put the outcome beyond doubt with an unanswered 1-4 in the space of six minutes. The visitors were now behind by ten points, but a goal from Billy Earls and two points from Patrick Kirby halved the arrears to five points at 3-9 to 2-7. Unfortunately, Newcastle West remained resolute and banked five consecutive points across ten minutes to rebuild a 3-14 to 2-7 lead with ten minutes left. Jack Gorman’s goal and Sam McNamara’s point were sandwiched between two points from the hosts. There were five minutes left and Patrickswell trailed by 3-16 to 3-8. The last stages of the match were dominated by Newcastle West as they amassed another 1-4 without reply. The final score was 4-20 to 3-8.

On Tuesday August 31, the U-19s host neighbours Ballybrown at 6.45pm.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior Hurling Championship commences against Doon on Sunday September 5 at 2.00pm in the LIT Gaelic Grounds.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A Championship begins against Mungret on Sunday September 5 at 6pm in Clarina.

INTER-COUNTY HURLERS: Congratulations to Limerick’s senior hurlers, who produced a memorable performance to defeat Cork in the All-Ireland Final at Croke Park. We are extremely proud of Patrickswell’s contribution to the success and the roles played by Cian Lynch, Aaron Gillane, Diarmaid Byrnes and Jason Gillane in the victory. In addition, we are delighted that Cian Lynch was honoured with a Man of the Match award for his superb performance.

UNDER 19 HURLERS: Patrickswell produced a stunning late revival to snatch a draw in the Premier Hurling Championship at home to Monaleen. The visitors scored the opening point in the first minute before John Kirby and Patrick Kirby put Patrickswell 0-2 to 0-1 ahead by the fifth minute. Monaleen rattled their hosts with a point and a goal in the space of two minutes to restore a 1-2 to 0-2 lead. However, the next ten minutes belonged to the ‘Well. Sam McNamara notched a fine point and Patrick Kirby added two additional points before his low penalty eluded the Monaleen goalkeeper. At the first half water break, Patrickswell were ahead by 1-5 to 1-2. After the restart, Patrick Kirby’s two points were matched by Monaleen. The latter stages of the first half were largely dominated by Monaleen as they plundered 1-6 in a devastating ten-minute surge. Patrick Kirby’s free point was the sole response in that timeframe. By half-time, Monaleen were five points ahead at 2-10 to 1-8.

The early stages of the second half were keenly contested. Patrickswell attempted to erode the Monaleen lead, but they were matched every step of the way. In the next seventeen minutes, both teams accumulated another five points and the scoreline was 2-15 to 1-13. Monaleen scored an important point before the water break and they looked in charge with a six-point lead of 2-16 to 1-13 with ten minutes left. The ‘Well were unwilling to concede defeat and worried Monaleen with a goal and two points in a mere three minutes. John Kirby’s drive had crept into the Monaleen net and this breakthrough was followed by fresh points from John Kirby and Eoin Harmon. There were seven minutes left and the deficit was slashed to a single point at 2-16 to 2-15. Monaleen recovered from the blow and consolidated their position with two more points during these seven minutes, while preventing Patrickswell from scoring. At the end of normal time, the visitors were 2-18 to 2-15 ahead. During injury time, Patrick Kirby’s point was bettered by two points in a minute from Monaleen. The scoreline in the 63rd minute was 2-20 to 2-16 to Monaleen and the clock was running out. Patrick Kirby added another point in the 65th minute to set up an unlikely grand finale. Patrickswell’s final hopes rested on a late free that was awarded twenty yards out in a central position. Monaleen packed their goalmouth in a bid to close every angle. Patrick Kirby stepped up to the sliotar and dispatched a fierce drive that evaded the Monaleen goalkeepers and defenders. As the net rippled with an equaliser, the referee blew the final whistle on a 3-17 to 2-20 draw.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: The Intermediate hurlers had a busy week. In the City League Final against Na Piarsaigh, the first half was keenly contested and Patrickswell reached the interval narrowly at 0-10 to 1-6 ahead. The second half was another close encounter, but the ‘Well gained the upper hand after the water break and claimed victory by 0-19 to 1-12.

The County League semi-final against Ballybricken-Bohermore was a stern test of the City champions. Our opponents took the lead with a point after one minute, but John Kirby equalised immediately. Ballybricken-Bohermore took advantage of a sixth minute penalty to establish a 1-2 to 0-1 lead. Darragh Ahern’s point was countered by two points from Ballybricken-Bohermore, although John Kirby and Peter Harty were on hand to cancel out those scores. The decisive part of the match was the middle of the first half when our opponents accumulated 1-2 and Patrickswell failed to score for ten minutes. In the 20th minute, the ‘Well were 2-6 to 0-4 behind. John Kirby and Paul O’Brien trimmed the deficit with another two points, but these scores were matched by Ballybricken-Bohermore. John Kirby produced a trio of points just before half-time to close the arrears to 2-9 to 0-9.

The second half began in a competitive manner. Ballybricken-Bohermore increased their advantage to seven points before Darragh Ahern and John Kirby scored points to alter the scoreline to 2-10 to 0-11. Patrickswell failed to score for fifteen minutes while our opponents plundered 1-4. By the 50th minute, the ‘Well trailed by 3-14 to 0-11. Darragh Ahern and Peter Harty scored points that diminished the arrears to ten points; however Ballybricken-Bohermore replied in kind. There were five minutes of normal time left and the scoreline was 3-16 to 0-13. Paul O’Brien’s goal and Darragh Ahern’s point slashed the lead to eight points at 3-16 to 1-14. Ballybricken-Bohermore restored a nine-point lead, before Darragh Ahern’s late goal was followed by Sam McNamara’s point. In the dying stages of the match, Patrickswell were five points down at 3-17 to 2-15. The recovery was finally snuffed out by Ballybricken-Bohermore’s fourth goal just on the final whistle. The result was 4-17 to 2-15.

UNDER 17 HURLERS: The Patrickswell U-17 hurling team had an excellent win over Croom in the County Championship in Croom. The final score line was 2-13 to 0-13. This panel deserve mention as they have worked extremely hard over the past few months and it was very encouraging to see clear progress being made. Goals from Dale McDonagh and Hugh Maher created daylight and there were excellent performances from every position throughout the field.

The team lined out as follows: Josh Mulcahy, Paddy McGrath, John Murray, Ross Ferguson, Christy Carroll, Billy Earls, Conor O’Brien, Harry McDonagh, Jack McNamara, Liam Fitzgerald, James Fitzgerald, Leon Kinsella, Paddy Gardiner, Hugh Maher and Dale McDonagh. Substitutes that played were Cathal Fitzgerald, Tyler McNamara and Jack Foley.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered a narrow defeat to Monaleen in the City Senior League at home. The match started at a ferocious pace when John Kirby and Darragh Ahern scored points in the opening minute. Monaleen were equally strong in attack and responded with five unanswered points in four short minutes. The scoreline in the 6th minute was 0-5 to 0-2 to the visitors. Kevin O’Brien’s point halted the onslaught, but Monaleen were able to respond in kind. As the scoring rate dropped, Patrickswell enjoyed a good spell when Jack Kelleher, Cian Enright and Darragh Ahern produced points to equalise at 0-6 apiece. However, Monaleen were able to edge ahead with two fresh points. Jack Kelleher trimmed the deficit to the minimum before Monaleen tacked on another two points to establish a 0-10 to 0-7 lead. In the closing stages of the first half, Kevin O’Brien and Jack Kelleher notched more points and Monaleen replied with a single point. The half-time score was 0-11 to 0-9 to the city club.

The second half began competitively and was characterised by fewer scores. Jack Kelleher (0-2) and Calvin Carroll added to Patrickswell’s haul, but Monaleen matched the hosts at every turn. By the 42nd minute, the ‘Well remained 0-14 to 0-12 adrift. Jack Kelleher’s point put Patrickswell back in contention; however Monaleen remained solid and fired over two points to create a one-goal lead. There was ten minutes left and the scoreline was 0-16 to 0-13. The home side battled hard and set up a tight finish when Kevin O’Brien and Jack Kelleher struck points to close the margin. With ample time remaining, the deficit was slashed to 0-16 to 0-15. Monaleen absorbed the pressure and accrued two invaluable points to cement their one-goal lead. Patrickswell attempted to overhaul Monaleen by focusing on taking points, rather than creating goal chances. Jack Kelleher’s free edged the ‘Well back into the match, but a series of wides allowed Monaleen to secure an 0-18 to 0-16 victory.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: Patrickswell beat St. Patrick’s at home in the final pool fixture of the City League. The opening ten minutes yielded no points as the teams matched each other closely. Sam McNamara’s opening point was supplemented by a close-range goal from Jonathan McMahon and a follow-up point from David Woulfe. St. Patrick’s had to wait until the 19th minute to register their first score, but they were rattled by four points in six minutes from Sam McNamara (0-3) and Jonathan McMahon. As half-time approached, St. Patrick’s clawed back two points to close the gap to 1-6 to 0-3.

The second half resumed with Patrickswell on the front foot. Jonathan McMahon and Jamie Dillon (0-2) built a 1-9 to 0-3 lead before our visitors pulled back a goal. Jonathan McMahon chipped in with another brace of points to put the ‘Well 1-11 to 1-3 ahead with fifteen minutes left. St. Patrick’s last point of the match was followed by a quartet of points in the closing fifteen minutes from Paul O’Brien, John Kirby (0-2) and Jamie Dillon. The final score was 1-15 to 1-4. Patrickswell’s reward is a City League Final against Na Piarsaigh on Monday July 19 at 7pm in Claughaun.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: The Junior B hurlers had a busy week, with fixtures at home to Croagh-Kilfinny and away to Askeaton. In the home match, Croagh-Kilfinny made the stronger start and were 1-3 to 0-2 ahead within ten minutes. Patrickswell responded with two points, but the visitors cancelled them out to leave the score at 1-5 to 0-4 after twenty minutes. There was an attacking flurry from the ‘Well that produced three consecutive points in two minutes. With Patrickswell trailing by a single point, Croagh-Kilfinny increased their tempo and banked a trio of points to lead by 1-8 to 0-7. Deep in first half injury time, the ‘Well notched a goal and minimised the arrears to 1-8 to 1-7.

The second half was barely a minute old when Patrickswell equalised, but Croagh-Kilfinny edged ahead a few minutes later. Mark Griffin’s men were growing in confidence and banked three points in five minutes. In the 40th minute, Patrickswell led by 1-11 to 1-9. The match was turned on its head again when the visitors claimed their second goal and another point to move into a two-point lead at 2-10 to 1-11. While Patrickswell equalised by scoring two points, Croagh-Kilfinny added another two points to their haul. There were five minutes left and Patrickswell found themselves 2-12 to 1-13 adrift. Thankfully the home team refused to give up and Patrickswell shocked Croagh-Kilfinny with a late goal and two points to triumph by 2-15 to 2-12.

Three days later, the Junior Bs travelled to Askeaton for their final league match. The match started with Askeaton notching two points within three minutes. Patrickswell settled into their routine and fought back with a goal from Natal O’Grady and three points. However, Askeaton rallied with a fine goal. The score in the 13th minute was a small 1-3 to 1-2 gap. The rate of scoring slowed significantly as Patrickswell and Askeaton shared two points apiece across the next twelve minutes. There was five minutes left in the first half as the ‘Well led by 1-5 to 1-4. Patrickswell’s sixth point was neutralised by Askeaton’s second goal as the hosts took a 2-4 to 1-6 lead. As the first half drew to a close, both sides added another point each. The half-time score was a narrow 2-5 to 1-7 deficit for Patrickswell.

The start of the second half was dominated by Askeaton and they outscored the visitors by six points to two. In the 43rd minute, Patrickswell had a hill to climb at 2-11 to 1-9 behind. Askeaton’s third goal rocked Patrickswell and increased the margin to eight points at 3-11 to 1-9. Remarkably, the ‘Well dominated the next ten minutes and outscored Askeaton by six points to one. There were seven minutes left and the arrears were slashed to 3-12 to 1-15. With just a goal between the teams, there was a grand finale in store. Unfortunately for Patrickswell, Askeaton managed the closing stages efficiently and their four straight points ensured a 3-16 to 1-15 win for them.

CAMOGIE: Well done to the Junior A ladies, who beat Na Piarsaigh by 3-6 to 1-9 in the League.

SENIOR HURLERS:  The Senior hurlers had a busy week as they faced Kildimo-Pallaskenry and Ballybrown across three days. In the match against Kildimo-Pallaskenry at home, the visitors scored the opening point. Patrickswell responded with a quartet of points from Jack Kelleher (0-2), Jason Gillane and Kevin O’Brien to establish a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes. Kildimo-Pallaskenry increased their tempo and produced 1-2 without reply in a short three-minute burst. Josh Considine stemmed the tide with a point, but it was cancelled out within a minute. By the 20th minute, the ‘Well were 1-4 to 0-5 behind. There was no panic and the hosts took the lead with three consecutive points from Darragh Ahern, Jason Gillane amd Jack Kelleher. Kildimo-Pallaskenry mustered the next point to draw level at 0-8 to 1-5. However, Patrickswell’s attacking style was rewarded with a further flurry of three points from Cian Fitzgerald and Jack Kelleher (0-2). During injury time in the first half, the visitors pulled a point back, but Jack Kelleher’s free built a 0-12 to 1-6 interval advantage.

The second half was barely one minute old when Kevin O’Brien rattled the net with a goal. Jack Kelleher tacked on two more frees to cement an eight-point lead of 1-14 to 1-6. Kildimo-Pallaskenry’s first point of the second half was submerged by a four-point salvo in two minutes from Jason Gillane (0-2), Jack Kelleher and Jamie Dillon. By the 40th minute, the home team were cruising at 1-18 to 1-7 ahead. Our opponents secured two points, but they were forced back by five unanswered points for Jack Kelleher (0-2), Jason Gillane, Kevin O’Brien and Darragh Ahern. There were ten minutes left in the match and the ‘Well were leading by 1-23 to 1-9. Over the next ten minutes, the visitors were in charge and scored 1-3 to Jack Kelleher’s point. As the fixture entered stoppage time, Patrickswell were 1-24 to 2-12 ahead. There was still time for Darragh Ahern to score a superb goal into the top corner and Jack Kelleher to score two points, thus bringing his personal tally to 0-14 for the evening.  The final result was a resounding 2-26 to 1-13 victory.

On a gloomy evening in Clarina, Patrickswell visited neighbours Ballybrown. Jack Kelleher put the ‘Well on the scoreboard with a point in the first minute. While Ballybrown responded with two points, Jason Gillane equalised in the 10th minutes. The hosts experienced a purple patch that yielded 1-4 without reply in just four short minutes. Jack Kelleher’s free halted the onslaught, but Ballybrown’s next point opened up a 1-7 to 0-3 gap in the 20th minute. The next surge was from Patrickswell as Jack Kelleher (0-2), Calvin Carroll and Jason Gillane trimmed the arrears to a single goal. The closing stages of the first half witnessed an exchange of two points apiece from Patrickswell (Jack Kelleher and Thomas O’Brien) and Ballybrown. The half-time score was 1-9 to 0-9 for the Clarina men.

In the first minute of the second half, a slick passing movement from Patrickswell was rewarded with an equalising goal from Jack Kelleher. Ballybrown nudged ahead by a point, but two rapid points from Jack Kelleher and Cian Fitzgerald put the ‘Well ahead by 1-11 to 1-10. In the space of the next six minutes, both sides swapped four points as Patrickswell kept its slim 1-15 to 1-14 lead. Afterwards the home team pressed forward and scored 1-3 in a significant seven-minute spell in which Patrickswell failed to register. By the 52nd minute, Patrickswell trailed by 2-17 to 1-15. Jack Kelleher’s two frees were cancelled out by Ballybrown as Patrickswell were kept at arms’ length. There was five minutes left on the clock and the ‘Well remained 2-19 to 1-17 behind. Jack Kelleher produced another two frees to slash the deficit to a single goal. There was a grandstand finale in store, but Ballybrown absorbed the pressure and secured two insurance points, despite a Josh Considine point. The final score was a 2-21 to 1-20 defeat.

The Senior hurlers are scheduled to meet Monaleen on Friday 9 July at 8pm in Patrickswell.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: The Intermediate hurlers are pencilled in to meet St. Patricks on Saturday 10 July at 7.30pm in Patrickswell.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: The Junior B hurlers are scheduled to meet Croagh-Kilfinny on Wednesday July 7 at 7.30pm at home. On Sunday July 11, they will travel to Askeaton at 7.30pm

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers are scheduled to meet Kildimo-Pallaskenry in the City League on Thursday July 1 at 7.30pm at home. Three days later on Sunday July 4 at 7.30pm, Patrickswell visit neighbours Ballybrown.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: The Intermediate hurlers played two City League matches in three days against Crecora and Ballybrown. The match against Crecora was played in wet conditions that affected the quality of hurling. Patrickswell were rocked by a first minute goal that bounced in from a long-range free. While Crecora added another two points, the ‘Well struggled with a series of costly wides. Peter Harty registered the first Patrickswell free in the eleventh minute, which was followed up immediately by a point from Josh Carey. The driving rain limited the amount of clear-cut chances, hence the scoreline at the first-half water break was 1-2 to 0-2 for Crecora. When action resumed, Pa Mann and Jamie Dillon produced quickfire points to narrow the deficit to a single score. Crecora were unfazed by the Patrickswell recovery as they produced two consecutive points to lead by 1-4 to 0-4 in the 25th minute. David Woulfe and Darragh Ahern’s points trimmed the arrears to a single point again, but Crecora fired over a free in response. Thankfully, Patrickswell finished the first half on a high note as David Woulfe and Jamie Dillon levelled the match at 0-8 to 1-5 by the interval.

The second half’s rate of scoring was initially very slow. Crecora restored their lead directly from the restart. Darragh Ahern and David Woulfe added fresh points to put the ‘Well ahead by 0-10 to 1-6 by the 38th minute. After a lull in scoring, Crecora took the lead with two points in a minute. When Paul O’Brien was sent off just before the second-half water break, Patrickswell were 1-8 to 0-10 behind and reduced to 14 men. However, Patrickswell produced an excellent final phase to stun Crecora. The decisive moment occurred in the 54th minute when Josh Carey’s height advantage resulted in a Patrickswell goal. Crecora had no response to the setback and the ‘Well sewed up the match with five unanswered points in seven minutes from David Woulfe (0-3) and Sam McNamara (0-2). The 1-15 to 1-8 victory was sealed by a remarkable display of teamwork in the face of unfavourable odds.

In the next match, Patrickswell faced neighbours Ballybrown in an extremely competitive encounter. The teams exchanged three points in the opening five minutes before Peter Harty put Patrickswell 0-4 to 0-3 ahead in the tenth minute. Over the next quarter of an hour, the lead changed hands on a number of occasions. When the scores were level at 0-6 apiece, Gavin Carey surged through the Ballybrown defence and clinically struck a goal. Peter Harty followed up with an immediate point, but the visitors responded with three consecutive points. There were five minutes remaining in the first half and the teams were deadlocked at 1-7 to 0-9. Two frees from David Woulfe allowed the ‘Well to reach the interval at 1-9 to 0-9 ahead.

Ballybrown took control at the start of the second half and notched up 1-4 without reply in a seven minute purple patch. Sam McNamara registered Patrickswell’s opening point of the second half, but Ballybrown shocked the ‘Well with an immediate goal. In the middle of the second half, the visitors were six points ahead at 2-13 to 1-10.  Patrickswell eroded the deficit with fresh points from Peter Harty and Sam McNamara, but a Ballybrown point cemented a five point lead of 2-14 to 1-12 with eight minutes left. The closing stages of the match were dominated by the home side, who were rewarded by a point and a marvellous goal from Sam McNamara. There was still five minutes left and the deficit was slashed to a point at 2-14 to 2-13. The Ballybrown defence held firm and a late point produced a 2-15 to 2-13 win for our neighbours.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: Patrickswell welcomed Castletown-Ballyagran in the West Junior B Hurling League. The opening exchanges were largely even and the teams were level at 0-3 apiece after ten minutes. Patrickswell were unsettled when the visitors capitalised on a mix-up to score a goal, but we stayed in contention and trailed at the first half water break by 1-4 to 0-5.  Unfortunately, the game was ultimately decided as Castletown-Ballyagran plundered 2-5 without reply in a devastating ten-minute spell. Patrickswell rallied with two late points, but the scoreline was 3-10 to 0-7 in arrears at half-time.

The second half started badly for Patrickswell as Castletown-Ballyagran accumulated another four points without reply in five minutes. The ‘Well responded with two points, but these were eventually cancelled out by the 50th minute. The deficit was 3-16 to 0-9 with ten minutes left on the clock. Patrickswell scored a late consolation goal before Castletown-Ballyagran registered the final point of the match to win by 3-17 to 1-9.

CAMOGIE: Well done to Junior A ladies, who secured a 2-17 to 3-14 draw with Mungret in the league. Congratulations to Sophie Carey, Lucy Quinn-Rea, Rachel O’Grady, Caoimhe Hennessy, Kailey O’Donnell and Shannan Kennedy who represented Limerick U-14 girls against Cork. Elsewhere, Roisin O’Brien helped the Limerick U-15 camogie team to beat Tipperary U-16B.
