SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers are scheduled to meet Kildimo-Pallaskenry in the City League on Thursday July 1 at 7.30pm at home. Three days later on Sunday July 4 at 7.30pm, Patrickswell visit neighbours Ballybrown.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: The Intermediate hurlers played two City League matches in three days against Crecora and Ballybrown. The match against Crecora was played in wet conditions that affected the quality of hurling. Patrickswell were rocked by a first minute goal that bounced in from a long-range free. While Crecora added another two points, the ‘Well struggled with a series of costly wides. Peter Harty registered the first Patrickswell free in the eleventh minute, which was followed up immediately by a point from Josh Carey. The driving rain limited the amount of clear-cut chances, hence the scoreline at the first-half water break was 1-2 to 0-2 for Crecora. When action resumed, Pa Mann and Jamie Dillon produced quickfire points to narrow the deficit to a single score. Crecora were unfazed by the Patrickswell recovery as they produced two consecutive points to lead by 1-4 to 0-4 in the 25th minute. David Woulfe and Darragh Ahern’s points trimmed the arrears to a single point again, but Crecora fired over a free in response. Thankfully, Patrickswell finished the first half on a high note as David Woulfe and Jamie Dillon levelled the match at 0-8 to 1-5 by the interval.

The second half’s rate of scoring was initially very slow. Crecora restored their lead directly from the restart. Darragh Ahern and David Woulfe added fresh points to put the ‘Well ahead by 0-10 to 1-6 by the 38th minute. After a lull in scoring, Crecora took the lead with two points in a minute. When Paul O’Brien was sent off just before the second-half water break, Patrickswell were 1-8 to 0-10 behind and reduced to 14 men. However, Patrickswell produced an excellent final phase to stun Crecora. The decisive moment occurred in the 54th minute when Josh Carey’s height advantage resulted in a Patrickswell goal. Crecora had no response to the setback and the ‘Well sewed up the match with five unanswered points in seven minutes from David Woulfe (0-3) and Sam McNamara (0-2). The 1-15 to 1-8 victory was sealed by a remarkable display of teamwork in the face of unfavourable odds.

In the next match, Patrickswell faced neighbours Ballybrown in an extremely competitive encounter. The teams exchanged three points in the opening five minutes before Peter Harty put Patrickswell 0-4 to 0-3 ahead in the tenth minute. Over the next quarter of an hour, the lead changed hands on a number of occasions. When the scores were level at 0-6 apiece, Gavin Carey surged through the Ballybrown defence and clinically struck a goal. Peter Harty followed up with an immediate point, but the visitors responded with three consecutive points. There were five minutes remaining in the first half and the teams were deadlocked at 1-7 to 0-9. Two frees from David Woulfe allowed the ‘Well to reach the interval at 1-9 to 0-9 ahead.

Ballybrown took control at the start of the second half and notched up 1-4 without reply in a seven minute purple patch. Sam McNamara registered Patrickswell’s opening point of the second half, but Ballybrown shocked the ‘Well with an immediate goal. In the middle of the second half, the visitors were six points ahead at 2-13 to 1-10.  Patrickswell eroded the deficit with fresh points from Peter Harty and Sam McNamara, but a Ballybrown point cemented a five point lead of 2-14 to 1-12 with eight minutes left. The closing stages of the match were dominated by the home side, who were rewarded by a point and a marvellous goal from Sam McNamara. There was still five minutes left and the deficit was slashed to a point at 2-14 to 2-13. The Ballybrown defence held firm and a late point produced a 2-15 to 2-13 win for our neighbours.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: Patrickswell welcomed Castletown-Ballyagran in the West Junior B Hurling League. The opening exchanges were largely even and the teams were level at 0-3 apiece after ten minutes. Patrickswell were unsettled when the visitors capitalised on a mix-up to score a goal, but we stayed in contention and trailed at the first half water break by 1-4 to 0-5.  Unfortunately, the game was ultimately decided as Castletown-Ballyagran plundered 2-5 without reply in a devastating ten-minute spell. Patrickswell rallied with two late points, but the scoreline was 3-10 to 0-7 in arrears at half-time.

The second half started badly for Patrickswell as Castletown-Ballyagran accumulated another four points without reply in five minutes. The ‘Well responded with two points, but these were eventually cancelled out by the 50th minute. The deficit was 3-16 to 0-9 with ten minutes left on the clock. Patrickswell scored a late consolation goal before Castletown-Ballyagran registered the final point of the match to win by 3-17 to 1-9.

CAMOGIE: Well done to Junior A ladies, who secured a 2-17 to 3-14 draw with Mungret in the league. Congratulations to Sophie Carey, Lucy Quinn-Rea, Rachel O’Grady, Caoimhe Hennessy, Kailey O’Donnell and Shannan Kennedy who represented Limerick U-14 girls against Cork. SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers had mixed fortunes in the City Hurling League last week. In their opening fixture of the competition, Patrickswell travelled to Caherdavin to meet Na Piarsaigh. The opening stages were keenly contested as both sides scored two points within four minutes. Our hosts increased the tempo and accrued 1-3 without reply during a four-minute spell. Patrick Kirby stemmed the tide with a point, which was quickly followed by scores from Jason Gillane and Jack Kelleher. After fifteen minutes, the scoreline was 1-5 to 0-5 in favour of the Light Blues. While Na Piarsaigh stretched their lead to four points, Patrickswell notched four consecutive points in eight minutes to equalise at 0-9 to 1-6. Patrick Kirby and Jack Kelleher traded points with Na Piarsaigh, before Jack Kelleher gave Patrickswell a 0-12 to 1-8 lead. The home team responded with three points in stoppage time to lead by 1-11 to 0-12 at the interval.

The second half began with a surge of four points from Patrickswell (Jack Kelleher and Kevin O’Brien with two points each) and three points in response from Na Piarsaigh. Calvin Carroll and Darragh Ahern put the ‘Well ahead at 0-18 to 1-14; however Na Piarsaigh accrued two points to re-take the lead.  There was another flurry of points as John Kirby and Jason Gillane cancelled out Na Piarsaigh. By the 45th minute, the score was 1-18 to 0-20. The hosts increased their intensity and scored two points to lead by a goal with ten minutes left. Darragh Ahern trimmed the lead to 1-20 to 0-21 but the game was decided by four straight Na Piarsaigh points to establish a 1-24 to 0-21 lead in the 56th minute. Due to injuries and stoppages, there was a substantial amount of injury time. Jack Kelleher was accurate from four frees, but Na Piarsaigh managed to hold off Patrickwell with a trio of points. The final score was a 1-27 to 0-25 reverse for Patrickswell.

Four days later, Patrickswell welcomed Mungret to Pairc Antoin O’Briain. The ‘Well made a rapid start and led by 0-5 to 0-2 by the eighth minute (Jack Kelleher 0-2, Josh Considine, Calvin Carroll and Darragh Ahern). Jack Kelleher claimed two more points, although Mungret responded with a score of their own. Jonathon McMahon’s goal was decisive and built a 1-7 to 0-3 margin by the 20th minute. While Mungret scored a fresh point, Darragh Ahern, Calvin Carroll and Cian Fitzgerald opened up a nine-point lead. Mungret’s next three points were interrupted by Jack Kelleher’s point to reduce their arrears to 1-11 to 0-7. Patrickswell’s path to victory was smoothed by Jack Kelleher’s goal and more points from Thomas O’Brien and Josh Considine. While Mungret notched the last point of the first half, Patrickswell were ahead by 2-13 to 0-8 at the interval.

The second half did not start favourably for the ‘Well. We failed to score for ten minutes and Mungret added four points to trim the deficit to 2-13 to 0-12. Thankfully Darragh Ahern, Josh Considine and Jack Kelleher were on hand to settle any nerves. There were ten minutes left and the buffer was 2-16 to 0-12. Jack Kelleher’s three frees were matched by Mungret’s four points and the gap hovered at nine points with seven minutes left. Mungret were left reeling by two goals in a minute from Jonathon McMahon and Calvin Carroll. When Thomas O’Brien scored a point, Patrickswell were 4-20 to 0-16 ahead. Mungret closed out the match with two points to ensure a 4-20 to 0-18 victory for John O’Meara’s men.

The Senior hurlers are slated to play Kildimo at home on Saturday June 26 at 7.30pm.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS: Patrickswell edged out Na Piarsaigh in the City Intermediate League after a devastating late goal blitz decided a competitive match. Peter Harty registered the first point within a minute, however Na Piarsaigh produced three consecutive points to take the lead. Two Peter Harty points were sandwiched between opposition points to leave the 15th minute score at 0-5 to 0-3 for the Light Blues. Na Piarsaigh accrued two more points, but the ‘Well equalised through a Josh Carey goal and a Peter Harty free.  Once again, Na Piarsaigh notched two additional points before Pa Kiely and Peter Harty restored parity. Na Piarsaigh had the final say in the first half with a closing point to lead by 0-10 to 1-6.

The start of the second half was a tense affair. In the space of thirteen minutes, both teams could only manage one point apiece. Peter Harty’s point equalised the match at 1-8 to 0-11 before another barren scoring spell of eight minutes. Cian Enright, Owen McNamara and Jamie Dillon produced more points, but they could not shake off Na Piarsaigh. The game was in the balance in the 56th minute as Patrickswell held a slender 1-11 to 0-13 lead in this exciting battle. There was a grandstand finale in store for the spectators. Amazingly, Pa Dundon’s men stunned Na Piarsaigh with three goals in just four minutes. The scoreline had shifted from a tight match to a seemingly easy win. However, the final score of 4-11 to 0-14 was not a fair reflection of the contest. The match had been in the balance throughout.

The Intermediate hurlers are scheduled to play Crecora away on Thursday June 24 at 8pm, before hosting Ballybrown on Sunday June 27 at 12 noon.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: In the West Junior B Hurling League, Patrickswell were narrowly defeated by Templeglantine by 1-16 to 2-12. Their next fixture is scheduled for Sunday June 27 against Castletown-Ballyagran.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers suffered disappointment in the County Championship final against Croagh-Kilfinny. Earlier in the week, Patrickswell had overcome Dromcollogher-Broadford in the semi-final by 3-15 to 0-11 to reach the decider. The opening stages of the final were fiercely contested and the rate of scoring was initially low. Croagh-Kilfinny struck two points within three minutes, before Paul O’Brien and Barry Foley restored parity by the 13th minute. Our opponents nudged ahead with a fresh point; however Peter Harty equalised in the 15th minute. The next ten minutes were dominated by Croagh-Kilfinny and they were rewarded by four consecutive points. Patrickswell trailed by 0-7 to 0-3 and needed a response. When Barry Foley slotted over a free, Patrickswell were within a goal. Once again, Croagh-Kilfinny increased the tempo and secured three more points without reply. At the close of the first half, Barry Foley scored a much-needed point. The half-time score was 0-10 to 0-5 to Croagh-Kilfinny.

The second half began with Patrickswell on the back foot. Croagh-Kilfinny notched a brace of points within two minutes of the restart. Peter Harty’s free reduced the arrears, but the West Men experienced another purple patch and claimed five points in succession. The scoreboard in the 43rd minute displayed a deficit of 0-17 to 0-6. Peter Harty and Paul O’Brien scored points that stemmed the tide. Unfortunately Crogh-Kilfinny were rampant in the closing 15 minutes and accrued another 2 goals and 5 points without response. The final score was 2-22 to 0-8. Hard luck to the players and management. It was a magnificent season.
