SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell produced an impressive display to overcome Kilmallock in the County Championship semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds. John Kirby registered the opening point within thirty seconds, but Micheal Houlihan responded with two frees for the Balbec. Patrickswell kept Kilmallock scoreless for seventeen minutes and surged ahead with seven consecutive points from Aaron Gillane 0-4, Jordan Higgins, Diarmaid Byrnes and Evan Fitzgerald. The scoreboard after twenty minutes displayed a 0-8 to 0-2 advantage. Micheal Houlihan notched another brace of frees, but Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane were on hand to maintain a 0-10 to 0-4 lead. The first half ended with Patrickswell 0-12 to 0-5 ahead when Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane contributed more points.

The opening ten minutes of the second half saw a reaction from Kilmallock, but they couldn’t eat significantly into the lead. Cian Fitzgerald and Aaron Gillane scored points to keep Patrickswell 0-14 to 0-9 ahead on the 40th minute. The game ended as a contest when John Kirby hit the net after unselfish play from Aaron Gillane. Within eight minutes, Patrickswell had increased the margin to eleven points at 1-19 to 0-11 thanks to Aaron Gillane 0-3, Kevin O’Brien and Thomas O’Brien. John Kirby and Aaron Gillane cancelled out Balbec points, but Robbie Hanley’s goal for Kilmallock narrow the gap to eight points at 1-21 to 1-13 on the 55th minute. Two further Kilmallock points created some nerves, but Patrickswell were ruthless with a five-minute spell that yielded an Aaron Gillane goal and yet more points from Gillane, Cian Lynch and Diarmaid Byrnes. The gap was now a remarkable twelve points of 2-24 to 1-15. Robbie Hanley’s second goal deep in stoppage time was a consolation for Kilmallock, but Diarmaid Byrnes’ late point wrapped up a satisfying 2-25 to 2-15 win.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers produced a late goal blitz to edge out Ballybrown in a compelling County Championship quarter-final. Patrickswell flew into an early three-point lead thanks to Jordan Higgins’ brace and Jack Kelleher. Ballybrown replied with two quick points, but the ‘Well were 0-7 to 0-4 ahead in the 15th minute (Aaron Gillane, Thomas O’Brien, Diarmaid Byrnes and Evan Fitzgerald). Ballybrown equalised in the space of four minutes with three consecutive points. Patrickswell were unfazed and enjoyed a great spell when Evan and Diarmaid Byrnes added points before Tom O’Brien claimed a superb goal after a mazy run. The scoreline looked healthy at 1-9 to 0-7 on 25 minutes. The remainder of the first half was level pegging as Aaron Gillane snatched two points and Ballybrown replied in kind. The interval score was 1-11 to 0-9.

The opening stages of the second half belonged to Patrickswell as Cian Lynch, Jordan Higgins and John Kirby built an eight point lead. However, Patrickswell did not score for thirteen minutes while Ballybrown plundered a goal and four points without reply. There was fifteen minutes left and Patrickswell led by a solitary 1-14 to 1-13. Over the next ten minutes, Ballybrown equalised at 1-16 apiece, despite Cian Fitzgerald and Aaron Gillane points. The game was in the mixer with five minutes to go. Thankfully, Cian Lynch’s goal deflated Ballybrown and more late goals from John Kirby and Aaron Gillane sealed a 4-17 to 1-17 victory that flattered the ‘Well. The semi-final against Kilmallock is scheduled for Sunday October 15.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The season ended with a match against a strong Monagea team. The scoring rate at the beginning of the first half was impressively high. By the 15th minute, the score was 0-7 apiece (Eoin Harmon 0-4, Gavin Carey, Cian Enright and Billy Earls). Liam Fitzgerald notched a clever goal, but Monagea were level within 30 seconds. Our opponents pushed ahead with a second goal and four additional points, despite scores from Darragh Ahern and Eoin Harmon. The half-time score was 2-11 to 1-9.

The game ran away from Patrickswell, who managed one point in twenty minutes. Meanwhile Monagea accumulated another eight points to build a 2-19 to 1-10 lead in the 50th minute. SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell rallied during the closing stages to beat Kildimo-Pallaskenry in the last group fixture of the County Championship. The opening exchanges saw the clubs trade two points apiece (Aaron Gillane 0-2). Our opponents notched four points without reply to build a 0-6 to 0-2 lead by the 15th minute. Diarmaid Byrnes and Thomas O’Brien cancelled out further Kildimo-Pallaskenry points and we still trailed by 0-8 to 0-4 on 25 minutes. Then Jordan Higgins’ close-range goal and additional points from John Kirby & Aaron Gillane levelled the score at 1-6 to 0-9 just before half-time. However, Kildimo-Pallaskenry struck a goal and a point to reach the interval at 1-10 to 1-6 ahead.

The initial ten minutes of the second half were low scoring as Kevin O’Brien and Diarmaid Byrnes matched Kildimo-Pallaskenry’s output. Patrickswell finally began to turn the screw by scoring five points in seven minutes through Aaron Gillane 0-2, Diarmaid Byrnes 0-2 and Jordan Higgins. We went ahead by 1-13 to 1-12 by the 50th minute as Kildimo-Pallaskenry failed to score for a lengthy 13 minutes. Patrickswell overwhelmed the opposition over the next ten minutes with two more goals from John Flynn and Aaron Gillane, plus a trio of points from Kevin O’Brien, Josh Considine and Diarmaid Byrnes. The scoreboard now displayed a comfortable lead of 3-16 to 1-14. Evan Fitzgerald scored the last point of the match to cement a nine-point win that was harsh on Kildimo-Pallaskenry.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers edged past Staker Wallace to secure a crucial victory in the County Championship. The opening ten minutes were shaded 0-4 to 0-3 by Patrickswell as Eoin Harmon struck three frees and Billy Earls scored a point from play. Staker Wallace’s first goal was quickly nullified when Eoin Harmon’s long range free took a deflection into the Staker Wallace net. Then Cian Gorman and Eoin Harmon’s points gave Patrickswell a 1-6 to 1-3 lead by the 20th minute. Our opponents scored two points before a long-range Eoin Harmon effort produced yet another own goal. The interval score was 2-6 to 1-5 to the ‘Well.

The teams cancelled each other out in the opening stages of the second half, with a trio of points apiece (Conor Robinson 0-2 and Darragh Ahern). Staker Wallace scored a second goal to slash the lead to a single point, but they failed to score for another ten minutes. In the meantime, Eoin Harmon added two frees. There were ten minutes left and Patrickswell led by 2-11 to 2-8. The rate of scoring was extremely low, but Josh Carey’s kicked goal in the 57th minute ended Staker Wallace resistance. Patrickswell were relieved to secure a 3-11 to 2-10 win. The final championship match is on Sunday September 24 at 5.00pm in Kilmallock. Tickets must be purchased in advance on universe.com.

UNDER 13 HURLERS: The U-13 hurlers suffered heartbreak with a narrow defeat in the Division 3 Championship Final against hot favourites Pallasgreen. Thomas Lynch and Evan Hayes scored points to cancel out the East boys. Jack Kelly’s persistence produced Patrickswell’s opening goal and established a 1-2 to 0-3 lead on 18 minutes. A further Harry O’Brien point made the half-time score 1-3 to 0-4.

Our second goal from Evan Hayes and two Thomas Lynch points had Patrickswell 2-5 to 0-6 ahead with seven minutes left. Unfortunately we could not muster another score and Pallasgreen plundered two devastating goals in three minutes. The final score was a cruel 2-6 to 2-5 defeat in a game that Patrickswell might have won. Hard luck to the players and management for a solid and brave performance.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered defeat in the fourth match of the County Championship against Kilmallock. We raced into a four-point lead by the fifth minute thanks to Cian Fitzgerald (0-2), Patrick Kirby and Aaron Gillane. However Kilmallock produced four consecutive points and had equalised by the 10th minute. The sides exchanged three points apiece (Aaron Gillane 0-2 and Jack Kelleher) before the game sprang to life. Kilmallock struck their opening goal, but Cian Lynch dispatched a rocket into the top corner within thirty seconds of that. Aaron Gillane had a great spell of two points and a clever re-directed goal to build a 2-9 to 1-7 lead. The Balbec surged back into the contest with four unanswered points, before Aaron Gillane and Evan Fitzgerald cemented a 2-11 to 1-11 interval lead.

Kilmallock started the second half with a trio of points, before John Flynn and John Kirby put Patrickswell 2-13 to 1-14 ahead. There were no Patrickswell scores for ten minutes, but Kilmallock notched four points to take a two-point lead in the 45th minute. Patrickswell were unfazed and enjoyed a spell of five points in six minutes (Aaron Gillane 0-3, Cian Lynch and Jordan Higgins). There were eight minutes of normal time and we held a slender 2-18 to 1-19 advantage. The game took a negative turn as Graeme Mulcahy plundered a goal and Kilmallock added two more points. While Aaron Gillane scored a point, Kilmallock cancelled it out immediately. There was high drama when Patrickswell were awarded a late penalty. The scoreboard displayed 2-22 to 2-19 as Diarmaid Byrnes faced the Kilmallock goalkeeper. There was almost total quiet when he struck his shot. Unfortunately for Patrickswell, the sliotar cleared the crossbar for a point. Moments later, the referee ended the match with Kilmallock emerging as 2-22 to 2-20 victors.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell lost their third Championship match against Ballybricken Bohermore at a hot and humid Fedamore. The first quarter was finely balanced when both teams accrued four points each (Cian Enright, Eoin Harmon and Darragh Ahern 0-2). Patrickswell surged clear with four rapid points from Peter Harty, Eoin Harmon 0-2 and Cian Gorman. Conor Robinson and Eoin Harmon had points matched by our opponents, before Ballybricken Bohermore added three more points. Patrickswell were 0-10 to 0-9 ahead when Billy Earls snatched our opening goal on the stroke of half-time.

A point from Conor Robinson and a second goal from Gavin Carey established a 2-11 to 0-10 lead in the 35th minute. Patrickswell were ahead by seven points, but failed to score for another 17 minutes. In that time, Ballybricken Bohermore piled on two goals and three points. There were ten minutes left and we now trailed by 2-13 to 2-11. Eoin Harmon, Andrew Carroll and Darragh Ahern restored parity at 2-14 apiece and there were ten minutes left to seek out a crucial victory. Despite having our tails up, Ballybricken Bohermore ended the match strongly and won by 2-18 to 2-14. The fourth match of the campaign is against Staker Wallace on Wednesday September 13 at 6.30pm in Ballybricken.

JUNIOR CAMOGIE: There were scenes of delight in Feenagh as Patrickswell won the Junior Camogie Cup final against Blackrock-Effin. It was a game of contrasting styles as Patrickswell went for points and our opponents aimed for the net. After twelve minutes, the scores were level at 0-4 to 1-1 (Ciara Barry, Ailish Byrnes and Leah O’Carroll 0-2). Blackrock Effin’s second goal was a setback, but Patrickswell dominated the remainder of the first half and led by 0-8 to 2-1 at the break (Leah O’Carroll 0-2, Sarah Carey and Roisin O’Brien).

For most of the second half, Patrickswell maintained our narrow lead. Four points from Sophie Carey, Roisin O’Brien 0-2 and Ailish Byrnes cancelled out Blackrock Effin’s attempt at recovery. There were five minutes to play and the ‘Well led by a narrow 0-12 to 2-5. With a degree of coolness, Patrickswell pulled away magnificently when Ciara Barry 0-2 and Ciara O’Brien put the gloss on a 0-15 to 2-6 win.

Jordan Higgins gave the ‘Well a perfect start with a 2nd minute goal, before Tom Morrissey claimed Ahane’s first point. Further scores from John Kirby, Cian Fitzgerald and Cian Lynch allowed Patrickswell a 1-3 to 0-1 lead by the 10th minute. Tom Morrissey’s trio of frees trimmed our advantage to two points, but the ‘Well surged ahead with consecutive points from Aaron Gillane, Diarmaid Byrnes, Mark Carmody and Jordan Higgins. On the stroke of half-time, Ahane pulled a point back. The interval score was 1-7 to 0-5.

The initial ten minutes of the second half were keenly contested. Aaron Gillane scored a second Patrickswell goal and another point, while Ahane notched four points in reply. There were twenty minutes to play and we held a 2-8 to 0-9 advantage. Another point from Tom Morrissey narrowed the gap, but Patrickswell replied with two fresh points. By the 45th minute, the score was 2-10 to 0-10. The next five minutes were uncomfortable for the ‘Well as Ahane scored a goal and three points against our four points (Kevin O’Brien, Cian Lynch, Jack Kelleher and Aaron Gillane). With five minutes remaining, Patrickswell led by 2-14 to 1-13. Paddy Morrissey’s goal for Ahane blew the game wide open and set up the grandstand finale.
