INTER-COUNTY HURLING: Congratulations to John Kirby, Eoin Harmon and the Limerick Minor hurlers for winning a gripping Munster Championship Final against Tipperary.
FESTIVE GREETINGS: Patrickswell GAA Club would like to wish all its members and supporters a happy Christmas and peaceful New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2021.
17th December 2020
INTER-COUNTY HURLING: The club were absolutely delighted with the magnificent All-Ireland victory for Limerick over Waterford. We were especially proud of Cian Lynch, Diarmaid Byrnes, Aaron Gillane, Josh Considine and Jason Gillane. The season delivered an All-Ireland championship, a Munster Championship and National Hurling League title. The future of Limerick hurling is bright.
Congratulations to Eoin Harmon and John Kirby for their role in Limerick’s Minor Championship semi-final victory over Cork. Commiserations to Calvin Carroll, Josh Considine, Jason Gillane and Patrick Kirby for being pipped by Cork in the U-20 Munster Championship semi-final.
CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The Club AGM took place online this year in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines. The number of participants was high. The first order of business was to adopt the standing orders and approve the minutes of the 2019 AGM.
Immediately afterwards, Aedin Foley began her Secretary’s Report for the year. She acknowledged the hard work of club members and volunteers throughout the Covid-19 crisis. Ultimately, Patrickswell GAA Club had weathered the storm by sticking together and supporting each other. The Club Social was an excellent start to the year and extremely well organised. She thanked Marty Morrissey for presenting the event, Aidan Tierney for his impersonations and David Punch & his committee for organising the gala evening. Aedin also congratulated the medal winners and award recipients who were honoured during the ceremony.
While “in person” fundraising opportunities were rendered impossible, the club’s finances were bolstered by a number of sources. Membership numbers remained high, owing to the trojan work of Paddy Carrig and Chelsea McCarthy. Online membership is being rolled out in 2021. The Club Limerick Draw membership grew year-on-year and was administered efficiently by Bernard Hayes. While the club lotto was suspended during lockdown, Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus O’Riordan and Tommy Reidy worked diligently to organise the lotto every week that it ran. The ticket sellers and subscribers were thanked for their ongoing support.
On the facilities development front, the Secretary hailed the removal of the boundary hedge at Pairc Antoin O’Briain as a major step forward. The two tracts of land are now joined together. She thanked Councillor Daniel McSweeney for his contribution to securing a €5,000 Community Enhancement Programme grant to upgrade the bathroom facilities. We have also been chosen as a site for free community broadband by Limerick City and County Council.
The Secretary then delivered a summary of the hurling season. The Senior hurlers defeated Adare and drew with Doon, which propelled them to a County Championship semi-final against Na Piarsaigh. The Caherdavin team were in ruthless mood and ended our interest in the competition. She expressed gratitude to the management team of Ciaran Carey, Natal O’Grady, Declan O’Grady, Damien Gillane, Pat Earls and the medical support of Dr. Dominic Harmon. The Junior hurlers’ season will continue into 2021 as they beat Castletown-Ballyagran in a County quarter-final before Covid-19 interrupted their run. The U-21 hurlers performed admirably and reached a County final, where they were pipped by Doon. The Minor hurlers bowed out in the group stages of the Premier Championship.
The Secretary congratulated Cian Lynch, Diarmaid Byrnes, Aaron Gillane, Josh Considine and Jason Gillane for securing National Hurling League and Munster Championship medals with Limerick. She wished all the players the very best of luck in the upcoming All-Ireland final. In addition, she hoped that the Limerick U-20s and Limerick Minors had favourable results in the Munster Championship over the weekend.
The Juvenile and Camogie clubs returned to action after the first lockdown. The Secretary thanked all the coaches and volunteers for restoring training sessions and organising Winter Training until December. The U-14 camogie girls won a County Championship against Monaleen, while the U-14 boys lost their own County final. The adult club has an excellent relationship with the Juvenile club, Camogie club and Patrickswell National School which has paid dividends. There was no Scor competition during the year as a result of Covid-19.
The Secretary offered her condolences to the families who suffered a bereavement during the year. The GAA community spirit has been remarkable. Credit must be given to Mary Gillane and her team of volunteers who assisted the elderly and vulnerable during the height of the pandemic. In closing her report, the Secretary thanked her fellow Executive Officers (John McDermott and Michael McDermott), the County Board and City Delegates (Michael Joyce and Martin Ryan), Central Council delegate (Paul Foley), Maureen O’Grady and club sponsors Duggan Systems Limited. She is looking forward to working with everyone in 2021.
The next segment was the Treasurer’s Report as outlined by Michael McDermott. He delivered a detailed analysis of the club’s performance and state of affairs for the year under review. While fundraising opportunities have been postponed, the club’s finances are in good health. The key drivers are the “bread and butter” activities like membership, the Club Limerick Draw and the club lotto. In addition, Michael thanked the sponsors at Duggan Systems Limited for their unwavering support and welcomed the grants and donations received. Despite Covid-19 curtailing activity, the usual costs of insurance, affiliations, medical treatment and facilities maintenance had to be met.
The Chairman’s address was given by John McDermott. The Chairman acknowledged the difficult year that Patrickswell and Ireland had suffered under Covid-19. It was a year not to be forgotten. Facilities had been shut down and matches were played behind closed doors. The level of community spirit displayed has been heart-warming and it showed the importance of the club within the community. Reaching another All-Ireland final has been a significant boost to Patrickswell and Limerick, both young & old. John paid tribute to members who had passed away during the year and commended the respect, loyalty, support & hope shown by everyone. He thanked all the players and coaches for the huge commitment they have invested during the season. There was recognition of the work performed by Juvenile and Camogie chairpersons, John Murphy and Shelagh Lynch, respectively. The Winter training sessions have been a great success.
The Chairman thanked Ciaran Carey and his management team for their endeavours over the past two seasons. Between them all, they have given decades of commitment to the club. The committee has big plans to guarantee the club’s future over the coming years, including the field development and significant fundraising to finance it. The sub-committees within the club have been extremely beneficial and share the workload among the membership. All the club’s plans will need support and be feasible. The Chairman wished good fortune to Patrickswell’s five players in the All-Ireland Hurling Championship, four players in the U-20 Munster Championship semi-final and the two players in the Minor Munster Championship semi-final. He finished by thanking John and Bernard Duggan as sponsors, the Secretary, Treasurer, President and committee members.
After the Chairman’s Address, PJ O’Grady briefly spoke in his role as Club President. PJ complimented the Executive officers for running the club so effectively. He was delighted that membership numbers were strong, that finances were under control and that the club was producing talent for Limerick. He observed that it had been a difficult year and offered his condolences to the families of the departed. His wish was to return to matches and stadiums in 2021.
Fr. Mike Cussen lauded the community spirit and wished Limerick every success in the All-Ireland final. Central Council delegate Paul Foley was delighted that Patrickswell had five players on the Limerick panel. It was a great honour for the club. He paid tribute to the three principal officers and thanked our sponsors at Duggan Systems Limited. There was gratitude to John Murphy and to PJ O’Grady for organising& marshalling so many events.

JUNIOR CAMOGIE: Best of luck to our Junior Camogie team who play Blackrock/Effin in the Plate Final on Sunday 4/10 at 12.00 in South Liberties.
UNDER 14 CAMOGIE: Last Saturday lunchtime in Mungret GAA Club saw the meeting of Patrickswell and Monaleen in the U-14 County A Camogie Championship final. Both sides were convincing winners of their respective groups to set up this mouthwatering clash. This Patrickswell team had already beaten Monaleen earlier in the year, but were taking nothing for granted in the final.
The game was refereed by Morgan O’Sullivan and started on the dot of 2pm. Monaleen had the first attack but Alannah O’Neill applied great pressure and the shot went wide. Goalkeeper Lily Griffin pucked the ball out and it was won in midfield by captain Roisin O’Brien. She sent the ball up the left side where Lily Considine earned a free which was slotted over the bar by Roisin O’Brien. Patrickswell won their puckout with some great work from Daisy O’Brien, who promptly slotted over the bar. The ‘Well were two points up.
Monaleen won the dirty ball in midfield and sent it into their corner forward, who rose to the challenge and scored our opponents’ opening point. Rachel O’Grady then started an attack from midfield, but Monaleen won the ball and the referee awarded them a free to level at 0-2 points apiece. Nicola Ryan at half-back set up Roisin O’Brien with a great pass. Roisin burst through the tackle and scored from the 45 metre line to restore the lead. From the puckout, Katelyn Cunningham claimed the sliotar and set up Shannan Kennedy to offload a great pass to Eanna Iseult. Eanna evaded two tackles and scored a fine point. The ‘Well led by 0-4 to 0-2 at the first half water break.
At the restart, Patrickswell won the possession from Monaleen’s puckout. Sophie O’Grady controlled the ball, held it and turned nicely before shooting just wide. From the resulting puckout, Patrickswell’s Sophie Carey drew the foul and Roisin O’Brien dispatched the free. The half-time score was 0-5 to 0-2.
Monaleen were playing with a strong wind in second half and the game was in the mix. Monaleen drew a free and made no mistake to reduce the arrears to 0-5 to 0-3. While Patrickwell won the puckout, the referee adjudged that the ball was thrown. Monaleen slotted over the free and moved within a single point. Lily Griffin’s fine save started an attack up the right wing. Monaleen won possession and drove the ball back into Patrickswell territory. Nicola Ryan drew a free in our half and Roisin O’Brien sent a low drive to Sophie Carey. Sophie turned the full-back and fired over the bar to make the score 0-6 to 0-4. Shannan Kennedy’s great catch in midfield picked out Sophie Carey, who beat her marker to the ball once again. Her shot sailed over the bar and established a three-point lead.
At this point, Patrickswell introduced Rebecca Corbett to the fray. Lily Griffin’s clearance was caught superbly by Roisin O’Brien on her own 45 metre line. Roisin accelerated up the left flank with her marker in hot pursuit. After navigating two tackles, she scored a magnificent point to build a healthy 0-8 to 0-4 advantage at the second half water break. Monaleen ramped up the pressure and started to dominate. However, they produce a few wides as Patrickswell’sdefence played out of their skin. Kailey O’Donnell has marked her opponent out of the match. A dangerous ball from Monaleen produced a clear goal chance, but Sarah Buston intervened with a fine challenge to save the day.
Monaleen continued to control possession and profited from some loose marking to score a point. A high ball from Monaleen was intercepted by Caoimhe Hennessy, who snuffed out the danger. She was having a solid game at corner back. From the clearance, Monaleen were awarded a free for a chop and the scoreline was reduced to 0-8 to 0-6 with just five minutes to go. Tension was high when Monaleen won a puckout, delivered a quick ball and notched a point. The Patrickswell lead was reduced to a single point and it was proving difficult to get the ball.
Monaleen surged forward and there was a question about too many steps. The referee did not call the infringement and Monaleen capitalised with an equaliser. There was two minutes left and the tide was turning. There was a pressing need to get our hands on the ball and remain calm. Monaleen won the next puckout, but Daisy O’Brien intervened and gave the sliotar to Roisin O’Brien. The ball is sent into the corner, where Rebecca Corbett didn’t let it come out easily. Eanna Isuelt hooked ferociously, while Rebecca Corbett blocked Monaleen from getting out.
Patrickswell battled for our lives and a draw was likely as time ran out. Sophie Carey was not willing to give up on the victory. From the wing, she drove a remarkable point over the bar to win at the death. The referee blew the final whistle to seal a stunning victory. The ‘Well were County A Camogie champions by 0-9 to 0-8. With six U-12 players on the starting team, the future looks bright for Patrickswell camogie.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers produced an excellent performance to defeat Castletown Ballyagran in the County quarter-final. Patrickswell started the match with remarkable intensity and pressurised our opponents in every department. Paul O’Brien’s goal in the third minute built the platform for a high tempo first half. The goal was followed by a string of seven unanswered points in twenty minutes from Barry Foley (0-4), Brian Fitzgerald, Darragh Ahern and Paul O’Brien. Meanwhile, Patrickswell’s defence held firm against the Castletown-Ballyagran attacks. In the 25th minute of the first half, the ‘Well held a 1-7 to 0-0 advantage. When Castletown-Ballyagran struck their opening two points, Shane Hannon and Brian Fitzgerald were on hand to cancel them out. The South Men secured the last point of the half as Patrickswell by 1-9 to 0-3 at the interval.
The second half began with the anticipated fightback from Castletown-Ballyagran. They scored four consecutive points to slash the deficit to 1-9 to 0-7. Cian Enright’s free point ended a period of ten minutes without a Patrickswell score. Barry Foley chipped in with a point two minutes later. The scoreboard was 1-11 to 0-7 by the 45th minute. In the next ten minutes, the teams exchanged two points apiece as Patrickswell’s Jamie Dillon and Cian Enright kept Castletown-Ballyagran at arm’s length. As the sun beat down, Castletown-Ballyagran surged forward. Their endeavour was rewarded by four straight points as Patrickswell were forced onto the back foot. With three minutes elapsed in stoppage time, our opponents were just one goal behind at 1-13 to 0-13.Patrickswell needed to hold its nerve as there was still two minutes left. The siege was lifted when Shane Hannon received the sliotar on the left touchline and notched the critical insurance point. The referee blew the final whistle shortly afterwards and Pa Dundon’s men marched into the semi-final with a 1-14 to 0-13 win.
CAMOGIE: The Camogie club had a great weekend. The U-14 girls won the County Championship by defeating Monaleen by 0-9 to 0-8. Elsewhere, the Junior Ladies beat Killeedy by 2-13 to 2-9 in their semi-final.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell relinquished the Daly Cup after losing to Na Piarsaigh in the championship semi-final. The Caherdavin men started the match at a fast pace and registered two points within the opening minute. Patrickswell had equalised by the third minute after Aaron Gillane and Kevin O’Brien struck points. The scoring rate was intense in the first quarter of the match. Will Henn restored Na Piarsaigh’s lead, but Aaron Gillane cancelled the deficit almost immediately. Our opponents experienced a purple patch in which they scored four points in two minutes. Aaron Gillane and John Flynn were forced to intervene with a point apiece. Remarkably, the score was 0-7 to 0-5 after ten minutes. Thomas Grimes put the Light Blues three points ahead, but Aaron Gillane and Cian Lynch trimmed the deficit to a single point at 0-8 to 0-7 by the water break. The scoring rate reduced considerably in the latter stages of the first half. Will Henn and Aaron Gillane exchanged points before Na Piarsaigh scored a fresh point and moved 0-10 to 0-8 ahead in the 25th minute. Once again, Henn and Aaron Gillane both scored a point each as the first half entered injury time. Na Piarsaigh claimed three consecutive points and Patrickswell’s cause was hampered by the dismissal of Seanie O’Brien for a second yellow card. The half-time score was 0-14 to 0-9 against Ciaran Carey’s men.
Despite having fourteen players, Patrickswell were on the offensive at the beginning of the second half. Cian Lynch scored on both sides of a Diarmaid Byrnes point to slash the deficit to 0-14 to 0-12. Unfortunately, Na Piarsaigh claimed a devastating goal that neutralised the Patrickswell comeback. Another point from the Caherdavin men was countered by a pair of points from Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes. At the 40th minute mark, the ‘Well trailed by 1-15 to 0-14. Na Piarsaigh accrued another two points before Jason Gillane’s free slowed them down. It was proving difficult to eat into the arrears as Patrickswell were kept at arm’s length. Na Piarsaigh increased their lead to six points; however Jason Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes were on hand to cut the margin to four points at 1-18 to 0-17. In the 52nd minute, the ‘Well had a good chance of overhauling their opponents. Sadly, Na Piarsaigh were ruthless with their possession and notched seven unanswered points in the last eight minutes to cement a 1-25 to 0-17 win. Hard luck to the players and management.

There were ten minutes left in the first half and the teams were tied at 0-6 apiece. By the 25th minute, the ‘Well commanded a narrow 0-9 to 0-8 lead. Doon’s next two points were countered by Gavin Carey and John Kirby; however they scored the final point of the first half to draw level at 0-11 each.
The second half was extremely intense and keenly contested. Doon surged ahead by 0-14 to 0-11 by the 35th minute as Patrickswell struggled to score. However, Damien Gillane’s men recorded four points from Jason Gillane (0-3) and Patrick Kirby during a sixteen-minute spell in which Doon failed to raise a flag. The clock ticked to 55 minutes and Patrickswell were 0-15 to 0-14 ahead. The match was destined for a dramatic conclusion as the two sides were virtually inseparable. Doon equalised, but John Kirby restored the one-point lead within sixty seconds. Unfortunately, Doon found a higher gear and they claimed three straight points to edge ahead at 0-18 to 0-16 in the 62nd minute. Patrickswell had to decide whether to aim for goal or hope for two points in the dying minutes. Jason Gillane scored a 64th minute point and the ‘Well took their positions for a grandstand finale. UNDER 21 HURLERS: The U-21 hurlers booked their place in the County Final after an impressive win over Mungret St. Paul’s. Our opponents were quickly into their stride and scored two points within two minutes. However, Cian Enright and Jason Gillane equalised for the ‘Well by the sixth minute. Once again, Mungret notched two quickfire points and held a 0-4 to 0-2 lead in the tenth minute. There was no sense of alarm in the Patrickswell ranks. Adam Carrig and Jason Gillane (0-2) produced a burst of three points in three minutes to send Patrickswell ahead for the first time. For the next ten minutes, the ‘Well were held scoreless while Mungret recorded three consecutive points. The pendulum had swung back in their favour. The scoreboard displayed a 0-7 to 0-5 Mungret advantage after twenty minutes.
Patrickswell needed a response to the slowdown in the scoring rate. The reaction was three unanswered points from Jason Gillane (0-2) and Josh Considine. Patrickswell now led by 0-8 to 0-7, but Mungret responded with two fresh points. On the stroke of half-time, John Kirby popped up with a point and the teams were level at 0-9 apiece.
The second half began with a Mungret point, but Patrickswell began to dominate possession and chances. Jason Gillane (0-2) and John Kirby established a 0-12 to 0-10 buffer by the 35th minute. Mungret trimmed the deficit to a single score, until Adam Carrig and Jason Gillane extended the margin to three points at 0-14 to 0-11. While Mungret registered another point, Patrickswell struck back with a salvo of points from Patrick Kirby, John Kirby and Calvin Carroll. There were ten minutes left on the stadium clock and Patrickswell had established a 0-17 to 0-12 lead. Mungret scored two points in succession, but Jason Gillane’s brace kept them at arm’s length.
At the beginning of stoppage time, Patrickswell looked comfortable at 0-19 to 0-14 ahead. Mungret threw caution to the wind and stunned the ‘Well by nabbing a goal and a point in sixty seconds. The lead was slashed to a single point (0-19 to 1-15) and there was plenty of additional time to come. Josh Considine remained composed and his point in the 63rd minute restored a two-point lead. Mungret had two options as time ran out. They could either plunder a decisive goal or grab a few late points at the referee’s discretion. As Patrickswell kept Mungret away from the goalmouth, our rivals opted for a point and regrouped to seek their equaliser. Thankfully for Patrickswell, Josh Carey struck an insurance point and ensured a battling 0-21 to 1-16 victory. On Wednesday August 19, Patrickswell meet Doon in the final at LIT Gaelic Grounds.

Both sides traded two points apiece over the next five minutes to maintain the gap at 1-6 to 0-5. While Mungret accrued three points in a row, John Murphy’s team replied with four straight points from Patrick Kirby (0-3) and John Kirby. Patrickswell were within one goal in the 25th minute (1-9 to 0-9) and confidence was growing. Unfortunately, a second Mungret goal hurt the ‘Well badly. The remainder of the first half was level pegging with an exchange of three points apiece. At the whistle, Mungret led by 2-12 to 0-12.
The second half commenced with a third Mungret goal and an additional point as the visitors cemented a ten-point lead at 3-13 to 0-12. To our credit, the boys never gave up. Over the next fifteen minutes, the teams scored four points each (Patrick Kirby 0-3 and John Kirby). There was ten minutes left and our opponents were 3-17 to 0-16 ahead. SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell crept into the County Championship semi-final by salvaging a late draw against Doon. While Doon went ahead with their sixth point, they were pegged back by Patrick Kirby’s fine goal in the 12th minute. Doon fired over another point to narrow the deficit to a single point; however Ciaran Carey’s men experienced a purple patch of three consecutive points from Tom O’Brien, Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes. Doon recorded four unanswered points to equalise at 1-8 to 0-11 by the interval.
Doon notched the first point of the second half within a minute of the restart. While Aaron Gillane equalised shortly afterwards, Doon scored three points within seven minutes to move 0-15 to 1-9 ahead by the 40th minute. While John Flynn reduced the arrears to two points, Patrickswell’s scoring rate had slowed. Doon added another two points in the next ten minutes, while the ‘Well were unable to register. By the 50th minute, Doon were 0-17 to 1-10 ahead. Patrickswell struggled to close the gap because scores from Aaron Gillane (0-1) and Jason Gillane (0-3) were matched by Doon at every turn. The stadium clock reached 60 minutes with Doon ahead by four points at 0-21 to 1-14. The odds did not look good for Patrickswell, but Aaron Gillane had not read the script. In injury time, he fielded a high ball and drilled a superb shot across the face of the goalkeeper. The ball nestled in the far corner and Patrickswell re-set themselves for a grand finale. There was sufficient time for Kevin O’Brien to surge forward and dispatch an equalising point that broke Doon hearts. The final score was 2-15 to 0-21.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers delivered a tenacious performance to draw with Kilteely Dromkeen in the third match of the County Championship. The teams exchanged one point apiece before Kilteely Dromkeen claimed their second goal to hit the front. Over the next ten minutes, the ‘Well were narrowly outscored by five points to four points. The half-time score was a deficit of 2-10 to 1-10.
Patrickswell enjoyed the early stages of the second half. By the 35th minute, the scores were level at 1-14 to 2-11. Our opponents reached the water break in the 48th minute only one point behind at 2-15 to 2-14. The lead changed hands on a number of occasions, although Patrickswell created a slender 2-18 to 2-17 margin in injury time. The match was now a battle for every single puckout and possession. Kilteely Dromkeen equalised in injury time and the outcome of the match was in the balance. Both teams pushed forward for a winning score, but there was no final drama. The clubs were forced to share a 2-18 to 2-18 draw after a tough contest. Patrickswell now have a record of one win, one draw and one defeat.

The scoreboard displayed 1-7 to 0-6 with five minutes left in the opening half. This goal spurred an Ahane revival. They notched a goal and two points to take the lead at 1-8 to 0-7. Thankfully, Patrickswell were able to secure two points before the interval and led by 1-9 to 1-8.
Ahane started the second half impressively and their next two points built a 1-10 to 1-9 lead. Patrickswell responded with a trio of points from Eoin Harmon, Patrick Kirby and Jason Gillane. With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Ahane reduced the arrears to 1-12 to 1-11. Jason Gillane and John Kirby exchanged points with Ahane, leaving the margin at 1-14 to 1-13 to Patrickswell with five minutes of normal time on the clock.
It was an exciting conclusion to the match. Patrickswell kept their composure and punished Ahane with three unanswered points from Jason Gillane, John Kirby and Eoin Carroll. There was now some breathing space at 1-17 to 1-13. Due to the lengthy water break, there was sufficient time for Ahane to respond. They took a free point and hoped that the referee would allow sufficient time for a late goal chance. However, Patrickswell held firm and proceed to the semi-final by 1-17 to 1-14.

Against Kilmallock in the first match, Patrickswell found themselves 1-4 to 0-0 behind within ten minutes after a slow start. Remarkably, Kilmallock failed to score in the second half. The 14-point swing gave Patrickswell a 0-17 to 1-7 triumph.
