SEASON’S GREETINGS: Patrickswell GAA Club would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

19th December 2019

CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The Annual General Meeting was held in the clubhouse last week. To start proceedings, Aedin Foley delivered a comprehensive Secretary’s Report. It was a busy year, with a number of fundraisers and regular events – such as annual membership, Club Lotto, the Club Limerick Draw and two Super Draws. Club membership has increased significantly to 499 persons (246 adult members, 49 lifetime members and 204 juvenile members), largely down to the stellar work of Paddy Carrig and Catherine Fitzgerald.

Bernard Hayes ran another effective Club Limerick Draw and David Quaid won €3,000 in the very first draw. Gloria O’Donnell led two successful Super Draws for a Limerick season ticket (including All-Ireland matches) and the New York Classic. Once again, the Club Lotto was a regular source of income and it was managed with diligence by Maurice Fitzgerald, Tommy Reidy, Seamus O’Riordan and Bernard Hayes. As Patrickswell reached a County Final, the programme was compiled with remarkable speed and accuracy by a sub-committee led by Brendan Cawley.

Tom O’Brien was instrumental in organising and executing a programme of works to spruce up facilities at Pairc Antóin O’Briain, ably assisted by his volunteer team. The Sports Capital Grant application received a favourable response from the Department, which was a testament to the work of Finbar O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien, Kieran Carroll, Seamus O’Riordan and Martin Ryan. On the social front, David Punch organised a memorable evening in Collins’ Bar to commemorate the 1973 and 2018 All-Ireland winners. On the same night, the Junior A hurlers received their 2018 medals, Martin Ryan was awarded a Distinguished Service Award and Brendan Cawley was named as Club Person of the Year 2018.

The County Final was the undoubted highlight of the season and the Secretary acknowledged the contribution of the players, management and backroom team. While it was disappointing to lose to Ballygunner, Patrickswell had finally reached the top of the Roll of Honour with its 20th County title. The Junior A hurlers retained their City League title and were unlucky in the City Championship final. Many thanks to Anthony Carmody for managing the team. The U-21 hurlers comfortably won all their matches in the group stages, but they were beaten in the semi-final by a resilient Na Piarsaigh team. The Minor hurlers scraped into the County semi-final when they shaded a tight match against Na Piarsaigh; however they were eliminated by eventual winners Ballybrown.

The Secretary paid tribute to the achievements of Cian Lynch, Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes – winners of National Hurling League and Munster Championship medals. Aaron Gillane was also honoured with an All-Star award. At Minor level, Patrick and John Kirby won Munster Championship medals and Patrick Kirby was named as part of the All-Ireland Minor Team of the Year. Gratitude was extended to the coaching staff of the Juvenile and Camogie clubs, who trained the young players every Friday night without fail. She also complimented the Juvenile and Camogie officers and Patrickswell National School. The long tradition of Scór continued in 2019 at both adult and juvenile level.

In closing, the Secretary expressed gratitude to Oliver Mann and Martin Ryan for acting as County Board and City Board delegates respectively. The continued support of club sponsor, Duggan Systems Limited, was much appreciated. She also wished Paul Foley the best of luck in his campaign for Central Council and expressed her sympathy for bereaved families during the year.

Michael McDermott outlined the financial state of affairs in his Treasurer’s Report. In short, the club had a solid financial year. He was appreciative of the support given by the various sub-committees and by the parish as a whole. Membership numbers were buoyant and fundraising events had proven very successful in 2019. There were also some extremely positive developments when the club secured a Sports Capital Grant and a Munster Council Grant.

John McDermott followed the Treasurer to deliver his keynote Chairman’s Address. It was a great season on and off the pitch. The club had achieved all the objectives laid out at the start of the year. The Chairman highlighted the importance of getting the right people on the right sub-committees and sharing the load among the community. He was complimentary to Gloria O’Donnell for operating the super draws, Tom O’Brien for improving facilities, David Punch for organising the gala evening, Paddy Carrig for revolutionising the club membership and Maurice Fitzgerald for managing the Club Lotto. The Chairman appreciated the roles played by Bridget Mann as Child Welfare Officer, PJ O’Grady as Health & Wellbeing Officer, Bernard Hayes as Club Limerick Coordinator and Brendan Cawley for producing the County Final Programme.

On the delegate front, the Chairman acknowledged the trojan work of Oliver Mann with the County Board and Martin Ryan with the City Board. The Vice Chairman Seamus O’Riordan was thanked for his support and advice, while PRO James McCarthy ensured that social media and What’s the Scor App were kept up-to-date. The club also owes a debt of gratitude to Theresa Carrig for diligently running the club’s text message service, Maureen O’Grady for managing the Facilities bookings and Damien Gillane for his grass-cutting over the season. Professor Dominic Harmon was lauded for his incredible work in 2019, becoming more than just a doctor. In addition, Patrickswell GAA Club could not operate without the help of its Juvenile and Camogie clubs. Friday night training is a joy to behold and it is critically important to entice and hold the young players. The Chairman complimented the work of the Juvenile and Camogie club, especially John Murphy, Louise O’Donnell, Marie Foley and Ann O’Doherty.

Besides the Daly Cup triumph, the big news story of the year was the acquisition of “Courtney’s Field” after years in the making. The Chairman thanked Mr. and Mrs Courtney for engaging with the club and agreeing to the sale that has been dreamt about for decades. Bernard and John Duggan were acknowledged as a great sponsor and a key employer for Patrickswell. The Sports Capital Grant was welcomed as a major boost to the future of the club, due to the outstanding work of Finbar O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien, Kieran Carroll, Seamus O’Riordan and Martin Ryan. This news was followed up with a Munster GAA grant to support the pitch acquisition.

On the pitch, the Chairman was thrilled that the Senior hurlers won the 20th Championship title and revealed that the management team were remaining in place for 2020. Anthony Carmody was thanked for his contribution to the Junior A hurlers’ success, while Des Foley and John Murphy were praised for their work with the U-21s and Minors respectively. The winter juvenile training has been a great success, with large numbers attending the sessions. Assistant Secretary Jim O’Herlihy sent his regards to the club and the Chairman offered his best wishes to Paul Foley in his bid for Central Council.

A number of speakers were invited to address the audience from the floor. President PJ O’Grady was impressed by the quality of the reports delivered and commented that the officers were doing a great job. It had been a marvellous year, crowned by a 20th County Championship since 1965 – finally surpassing Ahane’s record. The purchase of Courtney’s Field was a milestone for the club and great credit was due to Joe Murphy, Willie Leahy and Kieran Carroll. 2019 was potentially the best season in the history of the club. PJ hoped that the U-21 hurlers could win the County Championship in 2020 as the trophy is named for the late Gerry Bennis.

Monsignor Lane congratulated the Chairman, officers and committee for all the successes throughout the year. He commended the sheer amount of voluntary work that is performed by members and he is encouraged by it. Monsignor Lane was delighted that the 20th County title was won and thanked the panel & management. There was a sense that the Golden Age of the 1980s and 1990s could be repeated again. The club was a motivator for young people to come together and focus on positive activity. Fr. Mike Cussen lauded the community’s spirits and was confident for the future.

The meeting ended with a ratification of the same officers, except that Jim O’Herlihy has stepped down as Assistant Secretary. On the playing front, the Senior management team will continue for 2020. The Minor management team will also remain in place next season.

After the conclusion of the meeting, Finbar O’Brien delivered a detailed presentation about his future plans for Pairc Antóin O’Briain. The members were given an insight into the numerous possibilities for facilities. It will require significant funding to achieve these goals, but the club was asked to dream big.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell bowed out of the Munster Championship after losing to Ballygunner in Walsh Park. The Waterford champions dominated the opening stages and scored four points in the opening fifteen minutes. Aaron Gillane’s free registered the ‘Well on the scoreboard after twenty minutes, but Ballygunner extended their lead to 0-6 to 0-1 by the 25th minute. Thankfully, Patrickswell sprang to life in the closing stages of the first half. Diarmaid Byrnes and Aaron Gillane notched points within sixty seconds of each other to close the gap to just three points. JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell relinquished their City Championship crown after a narrow one-point defeat to Claughaun. Our opponents scored the first point, but Cillian O’Reilly soon equalised. Three Peter Harty points established a 0-4 to 0-3 lead after fifteen minutes. The game sprang to life when Darragh Ahern hit the net from close range in the 20th minute. Claughaun added another point, but Darragh Ahern and Peter Harty responded with a point each to cement a 1-6 to 0-4 margin. The Childers Road men bossed the closing minutes of the first half and were rewarded by four consecutive points. Just before half-time, Cillian O’Reilly stopped their surge with a point. The interval score was 1-7 to 0-8 to Patrickswell.

Aaron Carmody took the first point of the second half; however Claughaun equalised with a goal within sixty seconds. The sides were level at 1-8 each. Over the next fifteen minutes, both teams struck four points each to remain inseparable at 1-12 each (Peter Harty 0-3 and Cillian O’Reilly). The turning point of the match was Claughaun’s punishing goal after 53 minutes. Patrickswell were now a goal down and chipped away at the lead with two Peter Harty points. SENIOR HURLERS: The Daly Cup returned to Patrickswell for a record 20th time as the ‘Well produced a textbook performance to topple Na Piarsaigh. Cian Lynch set the tone with a superb solo point after two minutes. While the Caherdavin men promptly equalised, Aaron Gillane popped up with two frees to match Na Piarsaigh’s offering. After ten minutes, the scores were level at 0-3 apiece. Patrickswell nudged ahead when Thomas O’Brien and Josh Considine struck points. The key moment of the match was a devastating finish from young Considine, who sent a fierce shot into the net. Na Piarsaigh did respond with two fresh points, but they trailed by 1-5 to 0-5 after 18 minutes. The remainder of the first half was dominated by the ‘Well as four straight points built a seven-point margin (Jack Kelleher 0-2, Aaron Gillane and Andrew Carroll). Na Piarsaigh took the final score of the opening half. The half-time score was 1-9 to 0-6 for Ciaran Carey’s men.

The second half began with a Na Piarsaigh fightback that was combined with a scoring drought from Patrickswell. By the 50th minute, Na Piarsaigh had drawn level with six unanswered points. The fans were on the edge of their seats for the last ten minutes. Na Piarsaigh were in full flight and the ‘Well were on the back foot. The scoreboard read 1-9 to 0-12. Thankfully Diarmaid Byrnes ended the slump with a point and Aaron Gillane added another. Na Piarsaigh pulled a point back, but Josh Considine, Aaron Gillane and Cian Lynch opened a four-point lead by the 56th minute. Patrickswell were now in the ascendancy. Na Piarsaigh trimmed the margin to three points; however Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane increased the buffer to five points. The victory was almost in sight. JUNIOR A HURLERS: It was a week of mixed fortunes for the Junior A hurlers. In the City Championship in Rhebogue, Patrickswell faced a tough Claughaun side. Claughaun opened the scoring in the opening minutes before Peter Harty restored parity. The match sparked to life when Claughaun struck the back of the net. However, Anthony Carmody’s men did not panic and set about closing the gap. Three of the next four points were from the ‘Well (Darragh Ahern 0-2 and Barry Foley). At this point, our opponents held a 1-2 to 0-4 lead. After 20 minutes, Darragh Ahern lost his marker and scored a goal with great composure. Claughaun replied with a point, but Owen McNamara and Peter Harty established a three-point buffer. The final score of the first half was a point from Claughaun. Patrickswell led 1-6 to 1-4 at the interval.

The second half began at a ferocious pace as Claughaun’s second goal was cancelled out by Peter Harty’s strike. The Childers Road side then rattled three consecutive points to take the lead at 2-7 to 2-6. Barry Foley’s goal and Peter Harty’s point appeared to be decisive as the ‘Well led by three points with ten minutes to go. Claughaun scored a point, but Barry Foley matched it. There were five minutes left and the score was 3-8 to 2-8. When Claughaun moved to within two points, it still appeared that Patrickswell could weather the storm. In the opening part of injury time, Claughaun worked a goal and stunned the ‘Well. The clock was ticking and a point was required. Deep into injury time, Peter Harty was given a final chance to equalise. He made no mistake and the match was drawn.

Less than 48 hours later, Patrickswell faced Killeedy in the County quarter-final, held in atrocious weather conditions. It took eight minutes for Darragh Ahern to register the first point and he followed with a goal. Killeedy replied with three points before Barry Foley stopped their charge. After fifteen minutes, the scoreboard was 1-2 to 0-3. Killeedy produced another trio of unanswered points before Peter Harty stepped in with a point. There was five minutes left in the first half and the sides were level at 1-3 to 0-6. Our opponents were managing better on the slippery pitch and notched a goal and point before the half-time whistle. The scoreline was 1-7 to 1-3 in arrears at the break.

There was no let-up at the start of the second half. Killeedy scooped another three straight points to build a sizeable seven-point lead at 1-10 to 1-3. Jonathan McMahon’s point was cancelled out, but the game sprang to life again with Darragh Ahern’s second goal. There was still 15 minutes and Patrickswell trailed by four points. The rate of scoring dropped and Peter Harty’s point was responded to. The final score was a reverse of 1-12 to 2-5. Hard luck to the players and management.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell reached the Senior Championship final after a gritty victory over Doon. The East Men scored the opening point of the match before Diarmaid Byrnes replied with a free. Doon edged ahead once again, but points from Josh Considine and Aaron Gillane established a 0-3 to 0-2 lead for Patrickswell by the 10th minute. Our opponents produced two fresh points; however Aaron Gillane responded with a free to equalise at 0-4 apiece. The middle of the first half saw a reduced rate of scoring. Doon crept ahead with another point, but they were undone by a Kevin O’Brien goal that took a wicked deflection to wrongfoot their goalkeeper. After 22 minutes, the ‘Well led by 1-4 to 0-5. Doon reduced the arrears with two successive points, although Diarmaid Byrnes and Kevin O’Brien cancelled them out with another pair of points. The half-time score was 1-6 to 0-7.

At the start of the second half, Kevin O’Brien broke through the Doon defence and closed in on goal. He chose the unselfish option and crossed to Jason Gillane, who buried the chance. Kevin O’Brien followed up with a point five minutes later and Ciaran Carey’s men were 2-7 to 0-7 ahead. Doon closed the margin to four points with a brace of scores, but Jack Kelleher, Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes notched unanswered points to build a larger 2-10 to 0-9 lead by the 45th minute. Doon were frustrated in their attempt to close the gap as both teams scored three points apiece (Aaron Gillane, Cian Lynch and Tom O’Brien). In the closing five minutes, Doon narrowed the scoreline with two points and cut the deficit to 2-13 to 0-14. Kevin O’Brien struck the ‘Well’s last point before Doon closed the scoring at 2-14 to 0-15. Congratulations to the players and management.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell met Mungret in the City Junior Championship semi-final replay and made no mistake at the second attempt. The ‘Well started brightly and accrued two points within seven minutes. Mungret pulled a point back, but they were shocked by an incredible salvo of 1-11 without reply before half-time. Peter Harty scored 1-2 and there were more points from Jonathan McMahon (0-3), David Woulfe (0-3) and Barry Foley. The half-time score was a comprehensive 1-13 to 0-1 lead.

There was no respite for Mungret at the start of the second half as Barry Foley and Aaron Carmody struck goals to increase the advantage to 3-14 to 0-1. There were no further scores for a spell of fifteen minutes, but the lull was ended by goals from Clive Kirby and Gavin Carey. Clive Kirby added another point and Patrickswell led by 5-15 to 0-1. Mungret got a consolation point, before David Woulfe ended the match with a point. The result was a 5-16 to 0-2 win. SENIOR HURLERS: The County Championship semi-final will pit Patrickswell against Doon on Sunday September 22 at 2pm at the LIT Gaelic Grounds. Please support our biggest match of the season.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers were denied a place in the City Championship final when Mungret produced a late equaliser to force a replay. Gavin Carey opened the Patrickswell account with a point after four minutes, but Mungret replied shortly afterwards. Cian Enright put the ‘Well ahead with another point; however our opponents notched up three quick scores to lead by 0-4 to 0-2 by the fifteenth minute. The ‘Well increased their tempo and were rewarded by three unanswered points from Darragh Ahern (0-1) and the evergreen Barry Foley (0-2). Mungret halted the surge by scoring a point, although David Woulfe and Barry Foley contributed additional points to extend the lead at 0-7 to 0-5. There was a flurry of activity just before half-time, with Mungret claiming 1-2 in quick succession. Patrickswell were now in arrears. David Woulfe snatched a late point, which was cancelled out by the interval. The scoreboard at the break displayed a 1-8 to 0-8 deficit.

The second half began positively for Patrickswell as Barry Foley recorded a point. Mungret responded almost immediately, before Peter Harty produced two points in quick succession. At the forty minute mark, Anthony Carmody’s men trailed by just 1-9 to 0-11. The rate of scoring slowed down over the next ten minutes. Despite Mungret increasing their advantage to two points, Barry Foley and Peter Harty drew the ‘Well level at 0-13 to 1-10. Mungret crept ahead again, but they were left reeling by a Peter Harty goal on fifty minutes. Our opponents composed themselves and scored two points to equalise at 1-13 apiece before injury time. Every breaking ball was fiercely contested. Peter Harty’s free at the beginning of injury time put the ‘Well into the lead. Mungret were still battling hard for a final opportunity to score. In the sixth minute of injury time, they earned a free and it was despatched over the bar to secure a replay.

MINOR HURLERS: Patrickswell met neighbours Ballybrown in the semi-final of the Premier Minor Championship at the Gaelic Grounds. Our parish rivals scored the first point, but Patrick Kirby immediately equalised with a free. Ballybrown added two points to their total before Eoin Harmon pulled a score back. After ten minutes, the Clarina men held a 0-3 to 0-2 lead. There was a further exchange of points; however Ballybrown then added three unanswered points within four minutes. Our neighbours were 0-7 to 0-3 ahead, with five minutes left in the opening half. Niall Kerins stemmed the tide with his first point of the match, although Ballybrown turned up the heat with another three straight points. Patrick Kirby’s point on the stroke of half-time trimmed the deficit to 0-10 to 0-5. Unfortunately, Ballybrown had sufficient time to accrue two more points. The half-time score was 0-12 to 0-5.

Patrick Kirby started a recovery at the beginning of the second half with a trio of frees. Patrickswell were trailing by just four points when Ballybrown delivered a devastating goal. MINOR HURLERS: Patrickswell qualified for the semi-final of the Premier Championship by edging out Na Piarsaigh in a gripping match. The Caherdavin side started brightly and led by 0-2 to 0-0 after five minutes. Cian Enright’s point was immediately matched by Na Piarsaigh, but Patrick Kirby was on hand to score two frees in quick succession. The score after fifteen minutes was 0-3 apiece. Patrickswell were rattled by conceding a goal and a point within two minutes; however Patrick Kirby’s two scores slashed the deficit to 1-4 to 0-5. The remaining five minutes of the first half were evenly balanced as both sides scored three points each (Cian Enright 0-2 and Patrick Kirby). At the interval, Na Piarsaigh led by 1-7 to 0-8.

The second half was fiercely contested as both clubs gave their total commitment. Na Piarsaigh notched the first point of the second half, but Patrick Kirby responded with two frees to reduce the arrears to a single point. When Na Piarsaigh claimed another point, Patrick Kirby matched them. After forty minutes of action, the Light Blues were shading the match by 1-9 to 0-11. Both sides needed a win to reach the semi-final and Na Piarsaigh then established a two-point advantage at 1-10 to 0-11. Patrick Kirby’s trio of points put the ‘Well ahead for the first time at 0-14 to 1-10, but Na Piarsaigh levelled in the 50th minute. There was tension among the players, management and spectators. Two more points from Patrick Kirby put John Murphy’s side in the box seat, but our opponents took three minutes to equalise. There was three minutes on the clock and the match was tied at 0-16 to 1-13. Every breaking ball was chased down and the players worked hard to create the decisive moment. On the stroke of time, Patrickswell earned a free. There was no mistake from the accurate Patrick Kirby. Na Piarsaigh laboured to make one final chance in injury time, but the ‘Well held firm.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell preserved their unbeaten record in the Senior Hurling Championship after grinding out a draw with Adare. Kevin O’Brien and Calvin Carroll halted the surge by firing over two points in rapid succession. At the ten minute mark, Patrickswell trailed by 0-5 to 0-4. The game appeared to swing decisively in Adare’s favour as they plundered 1-5 without reply in a devastating spell. Thankfully Jack Kelleher and Paul O’Brien responded with points, but the ‘Well found themselves 1-10 to 0-6 behind on 20 minutes. The remainder of the first half was evenly matched as Jack Kelleher (0-2) and Diarmaid Byrnes were cancelled out. The half-time score was 1-13 to 0-9.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell face Adare in the Senior Hurling Championship at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday August 31 at 6pm.

MINOR HURLERS: The Minor hurlers experienced mixed fortunes in the Premier Championship. The first match of the week was a difficult visit from parish neighbours Ballybrown. Eoin Harmon scored the first point of the match after five minutes; however Ballybrown went ahead with an immediate goal in reply. Eoin Harmon’s second point reduced the margin to a single score, but Ballybrown stepped up the tempo and secured three unanswered points. After ten minutes, the Clarina team led by 1-3 to 0-2. Eoin Harmon’s third free of the match edged the ‘Well closer, although Ballybrown shocked the home team with another quickfire goal and point. Eoin Harmon’s accuracy increased his personal tally by another two points, but Ballybrown matched John Murphy’s players stride for stride. The deficit was not impossible to overcome at 2-6 to 0-5. Unfortunately, Ballybrown completely dominated the closing stages of the first half and plundered six points without response. The half-time score was 2-12 to 0-5.

The second half started with another two Ballybrown points, before Eoin Harmon stepped in with a single response. The Ballybrown attack was relentless as they notched another four consecutive points and opened a 2-18 to 0-6. Eoin Harmon and Sam McNamara showed true grit to claim fresh points, but Ballybrown managed two points of their own. As the match entered its final quarter, the arrears were 2-20 to 0-8. Ballybrown were ruthless in the final stages of the match. Despite Eoin Harmon’s additional contribution of four points, the visitors enjoyed three goals. The final score was a 5-20 to 0-12 reverse.

Four days later, Patrickswell welcomed Garryspillane and Patrick Kirby returned to the starting line-up. The team was revitalised and immediately took charge. The ‘Well helped themselves to six unanswered points as Patrick Kirby (0-4), John Kirby and Cian Enright sparkled. The Bouncers halted the surge with two points, but they were once again on the back foot when Eoin Harmon, Cormac Kerins and Patrick Kirby increased the lead at 0-9 to 0-2. The middle segment of the first half was competitive as Patrickswell secured three points from John Kirby (0-2) and Cian Gorman to cancel out Garryspillane scores. On the 25 minute mark, the ‘Well led by 0-12 to 0-5. Patrick Kirby and Cian Enright added points, but Garryspillane were ultimately sunk by Niall Kerins’ goal and a Patrick Kirby point on the stroke of half-time. The referee blew for half-time and the home side led by 1-15 to 0-6.

The second half was an exhibition in score-taking as Patrickswell set about wiping the memory of the Ballybrown defeat. Patrick Kirby scored a goal almost immediately and this was followed by another two points from the Kirby brothers. Garryspillane countered with a point, but they were now trailing by 2-17 to 0-7. While Eoin Harmon’s point was cancelled out by Garryspillane, the ‘Well swept upfield and accumulated another four points without reply from Patrick Kirby (0-2), John Kirby and Eoin Harmon. There was fifteen minutes remaining and Patrickswell led by 2-22 to 0-8. The Bouncers’ next point was met with a salvo of eight points in five minutes from John Kirby (0-2), Sam McNamara (0-2), Eoin Harmon, Cian Enright and Shane Hannon. There was still ten minutes left and the ‘Well were cruising at 2-30 to 0-9. The pace relented somewhat and Garryspillane consoled themselves with 1-2 without reply in a five-minute burst. The match ended with points from Eoin Harmon and Cian Gorman to cap an impressive 2-32 to 1-12 win.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell produced a stirring comeback to salvage a draw against Kilmallock in the Senior Hurling Championship. Kilmallock started the match with great intensity and built up a seven point lead within fifteen minutes. Aaron Gillane’s free put an end to the onslaught and began the Patrickswell revival. Another Aaron Gillane point reduced the arrears to 0-7 to 0-2, before Kilmallock scored their eighth point. Andrew Carroll and Aaron Gillane contributed fresh points apiece; however their scores were cancelled out by the Balbec. After twenty minutes, the scoreboard displayed a deficit of 0-10 to 0-4. Aaron Gillane’s accuracy from frees was now hurting Kilmallock and he was rewarded with three points in three minutes. Ciaran Carey’s side were sitting within three points at 0-10 to 0-7. Kilmallock nudged ahead with another point, but Gillane chalked up two more points for his personal tally. At half-time, the ‘Well trailed by just 0-11 to 0-9. Aaron Gillane was leading scorer with eight points.

The start of the second half was evenly balanced. Kevin O’Brien and Andrew Carroll notched early points to cancel out Kilmallock’s two points. Patrickswell needed a big response and it was delivered by Aaron Gillane’s salvo of four points in four minutes. The teams were inseparable at 0-17 apiece after 57 minutes. MINOR HURLERS: The Minor hurlers lost narrowly to Mungret away in the Premier Hurling Championship. The match was played in poor conditions, which affected the quality of hurling. Mungret struck two unanswered points, yet Patrick Kirby equalised with a string of three frees in nine minutes. After 25 minutes, the scores were tied at 0-5 to 0-5. Unfortunately for the ‘Well, Mungret snatched a goal just before the half-time whistle and led by 1-5 to 0-5.

The deteriorating conditions in the second half ensured a low-scoring contest. Cian Enright’s early point was eroded by four consecutive home points by 53rd minute. There were only five minutes on the clock and Patrickswell trailed by 1-9 to 0-6. Cian Enright’s point was a glimmer of hope, but there were no further scores until deep into stoppage time. JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell claimed our first silverware of the season when the Junior A hurlers beat Claughaun in the City League final. The match started badly for the ‘Well after Claughaun scored a goal within two minutes of the throw-in. However, our opponents were devastated by a ten-minute spell where Peter Harty registered an extraordinary hat-trick of goals. The scoreline after 15 minutes was 3-2 to 1-1. Claughaun narrowed the gap with three consecutive points, but their recovery was halted by a point from Jamie Dillon and a fourth goal and fresh point from Peter Harty. Patrickswell were now ahead by 4-4 to 1-4, before Claughaun closed the first half with two points.

The second half began positively for Claughaun as they notched another two points and trimmed the deficit to five points. Owen McNamara, Darragh Ahern and Paul Bennis struck a point apiece as Patrickswell matched Claughaun score for score. With fifteen minutes left, Patrickswell were ahead by 4-7 to 1-11. The five point margin was still a worry, before Anthony Carmody’s men claimed seven unanswered points to clinch the match. The scorers were Peter Harty (0-3), David Woulfe (0-2), Jamie Dillon and Darragh Ahern. Owen McNamara lifted the trophy on the back of a 4-14 to 1-12 triumph.

Doon registered their first point, but Mark Carmody and Jack Kelleher stretched the lead to 0-5 to 0-1 for the visitors. The East Men increased their tempo and were rewarded by five unanswered points. At the midpoint of the first half, Doon led by 0-6 to 0-5. Kevin O’Brien equalised for Patrickswell, but Doon edged ahead again. Thankfully, Jack Kelleher was in excellent scoring form before the interval. He notched five points to establish a 0-11 to 0-8 lead at half-time.

The pendulum swung back in Doon’s favour as they struck two points. Jack Kelleher restored parity at 0-16 apiece to set up an exciting final five minutes. Due to a player injury, the referee had to call a draw before time elapsed.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell picked up their second win of the City Championship after a convincing win over Monaleen. Within ten minutes, the ‘Well cruised into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead. The second half began favourably when Cian Enright’s two points were followed by an Owen McNamara goal. From an extremely tight angle, the forward slotted the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs. Patrickswell were nine points ahead at 1-12 to 0-6. Monaleen fought back with four unanswered points to slash the arrears to 1-12 to 0-10. The game was decided as a contest when Patrickswell rattled over four points and Peter Harty struck a lovely goal from a narrow angle. The scoreline was 2-16 to 0-11 with a few minutes left. SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers had a busy and mixed week with two matches in four days. In the opening fixture, Patrickswell made the short journey to Ballybrown in the All-County Hurling League. Darragh Ahern scored the opening point within thirty seconds. However, Ballybrown blitzed the ‘Well with two goals in a minute that ultimately determined the course of the match. Patrickswell settled themselves into the match and reduced the deficit to 2-1 to 0-5 after fifteen minutes. The Clarina men increased their tempo and dominated the remainder of the first half, scoring a third goal and racking up more points. At the interval, Ciaran Carey’s men trailed by 3-9 to 0-7.

The second half began with a point from Kevin O’Brien; however Ballybrown responded with three points in quick succession. Jack Kelleher kept the ‘Well in touch with three consecutive scores to make the scoreline 0-11 to 3-12. There was a flicker of hope when Patrickswell notched their first goal, but Ballybrown were able to maintain the gap. With ten minutes left in the game, Ballybrown were cruising at 3-15 to 1-12. Jack Kelleher had a strong finish to the match, scoring four unanswered points. The final result was a 3-15 to 1-16 defeat.

The next match was a rolled-up League and City Championship encounter with Monaleen in Claughaun. There was a high tempo start to the match as early points were exchanged. SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers made a winning start to the All County Hurling League after a high-scoring and narrow victory against Ahane. Patrickswell dominated the opening fifteen minutes and built a 0-6 to 0-2 lead with points from five different players. Ahane edged themselves back into the contest and began to match the ‘Well point-for-point. Four points from Ahane were countered by four points from Patrickswell via Jack Kelleher (0-2), Jason Gillane and Darragh Ahern. The scoreline after twenty minutes was 0-10 to 0-6. The teams continued to score freely as Patrickswell approached half-time with a 0-13 to 0-10 lead. However, Ahane scored a speculative equalising goal from long range in the closing stages. Both teams traded points and reached the interval level at 0-14 to 1-11.

The second half was barely two minutes old when Calvin Carroll scored Patrickswell’s first goal to open up a 1-14 to 1-12 lead. Ahane responded with a flurry of points to draw level at 1-16 apiece on forty minutes. Jason Gillane and Andrew Carroll notched points to build a two-point advantage, but Ahane restored parity almost immediately. The middle of the second half was keenly fought as the teams continued to be inseparable. As the match entered the final ten minutes, the scoreline was 1-21 apiece. The game seemed to turn in Patrickswell’s favour when Kevin O’Brien’s shot rattled the crossbar and dropped kindly for Darragh Ahern to hit an empty net. To their credit, Ahane raced upfield and equalised with a close-range goal. The spectators were looking forward to an exciting climax to the match. SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers produced a comprehensive display to beat champions Na Piarsaigh in the second match of the County Championship. Patrickswell began with a high tempo and were rewarded by an early point, which Na Piarsaigh immediately cancelled out. Within five minutes, Kevin O’Brien struck the net after his determined solo run. Na Piarsaigh gradually settled into the contest and scored a couple of points to close the gap at 1-2 to 0-3. However, the Caherdavin men were put on the back foot when Kevin O’Brien notched his second goal to cement a 2-2 to 0-3 advantage for the ‘Well. Diarmaid Byrnes and Jason Gillane then contributed fresh points to open up a seven-point lead of 2-4 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes. Na Piarsaigh halted the surge with their fourth point of the match, but Aaron Gillane and Andrew Carroll scored points to extend the margin to eight points at 2-6 to 0-4. The first half ended with a robust response from Na Piarsaigh when they claimed three consecutive points to move closer at 2-6 to 0-7. Both teams concluded the first half with two points apiece (Jason Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes). At half-time, Patrickswell were 2-8 to 0-9 ahead.

Na Piarsaigh made a good start to the second half and scored two straight points. The deficit stood at one goal with 2-8 to 0-11 on the scoreboard. Aaron Gillane produced three points that were sandwiched between three Na Piarsaigh points. The scoreline after forty minutes was 2-11 to 0-14. Na Piarsaigh then moved within two points and there was great anticipation among the crowd for a grandstand finish. However, the match was decided by a ruthless attacking surge from Patrickswell that yielded six consecutive points. Aaron Gillane (0-2), Josh Considine, Andrew Carroll and Jack Kelleher (0-1 each) finally put the match beyond Na Piarsaigh. At the end or normal time, Ciaran Carey’s men held a commanding 2-17 to 0-15 lead. Na Piarsaigh settled into their stride and roared back into the match with a passage of one goal and three points without reply. At the twenty minute mark, the Caherdavin men were 1-4 to 0-4 ahead. Thankfully, the ‘Well had a second wind and notched four points in a five-minute surge. With five minutes remaining in the first half, the sides were level at 0-8 to 1-5. Unfortunately, Na Piarsaigh devastated Des Foley’s men with an unanswered blitz of 1-5 before the interval. The half-time score was a deficit of 2-10 to 0-8.

Patrickswell needed an immediate response at the start of the second half. However, Na Piarsaigh chalked up another 1-2 without reply in five minutes. The margin was now thirteen points at 0-8 to 3-12. John Flynn sparked a mini-revival with a haul of one goal and two points as the arrears were trimmed back to eight points at 1-10 to 3-12. There was no room for a dramatic comeback as the Light Blues increased their tempo and secured another 1-3 without response. As the game entered its final phases, Na Piarsaigh led by 4-15 to 1-10. Patrickwell added a few insurance points while exiting the competition on a scoreline of 1-12 to 4-15. Hard luck to the players and management.

UNDER 21 HURLERS: The U-21 hurlers maintained their 100% record in the Premier Hurling Championship after beating Kildimo-Pallaskenry at a rain-soaked Gaelic Grounds.

Our opponents adapted to the terrible conditions and dominated the opening fifteen minutes. Patrickswell found themselves four points down and under consistent pressure. John Flynn notched the ‘Well’s first point to settle some nerves; however Kildimo-Pallaskenry cancelled out this score immediately. Once again, John Flynn narrowed the deficit to three points with his second point, but it was swiftly matched. Thankfully, Des Foley’s men rallied in the last five minutes of the first half and claimed consecutive points from Cillian O’Reilly, Paudie Maher and John Flynn. The half-time deficit was 0-6 to 0-5.

The second half produced a dominant display from Patrickswell that overwhelmed Kildimo-Pallaskenry. Darragh Ahern, John Flynn and Brian Fitzgerald scored early points to establish a 0-8 to 0-6 lead. Cian Enright’s goal was a turning point in the match. This moment was followed by a consistent scoring rate as Jamie Dillon, Jason Gillane (0-2) and Josh Considine (0-2) piled on the points. With five minutes left, Patrickwell were ten points ahead at 1-13 to 0-6. Our opponents struck their solitary point of the second half with a few minutes left. The final score was 1-14 to 0-7. U-21 HURLERS: In the third match of the Premier Championship, the ‘Well comprehensively beat Monaleen. Our opponents were on the back foot from the outset and were unable to halt our impressive attack. Within five minutes, Darragh Ahern cleverly intercepted the goalkeeper’s short clearance and drove the sliotar into the unguarded net. This goal was followed by points from John Flynn (0-2), Jason Gillane, Josh Considine, Jamie Dillon and Paudie Maher. Patrickswell were 1-7 to 0-0 ahead after fifteen minutes. Monaleen eventually registered a point on the scoreboard, however the onslaught continued from John Flynn (0-2), Calvin Carroll and Jason Gillane. The half-time advantage was twelve points at 1-11 to 0-2.

Monaleen registered two points at the beginning of the second half; however Patrickswell cancelled these scores out quickly. The reprieve for Monaleen was short-lived. In the space of ten minutes, Jordan Higgins scored a close-range goal, while John Flynn and Jason Gillane combined to score four points. The margin had expanded to 2-17 to 0-4 with five minutes remaining. Our opponents notched a late consolation goal and point; however it was fitting that Calvin Carroll secured the final point of the match. U-21 HURLERS: The U-21 hurlers continued their winning start to the Championship season by defeating Na Piarsaigh in Rhebogue. Patrickswell made an impressive start and led by 0-3 to 0-0 within five minutes. Na Piarsaigh managed to settle into the match and replied with two consecutive points. Shortly afterwards, Jason Gillane and Josh Considine gave the ‘Well a 0-5 to 0-2 advantage; however the Caherdavin team responded with two fresh scores. After fifteen minutes, Patrickswell held a narrow 0-5 to 0-4 lead. Des Foley’s men enjoyed a short purple patch and racked up three unanswered points to build a 0-8 to 0-4 margin. Na Piarsaigh were resilient and reduced the arrears with yet another two point burst. Thankfully, Cillian O’Reilly scored a late point to establish a 0-9 to 0-6 half-time buffer.

The second half was a tighter contest and points were harder to register. Na Piarsaigh notched the opening point, but Jason Gillane cancelled out that particular score. Na Piarsaigh chalked up another point before John Flynn replied in kind. Paudie Maher fired a vital point to provide some breathing space. As the match entered its final quarter, the ‘Well led by 0-12 to 0-8. However, two Na Piarsaigh points slashed the margin to 0-12 to 0-10. The ‘Well produced another point to cement a one-goal lead at 0-13 to 0-10 with two minutes remaining. Na Piarsaigh earned a long-distance free at the start of injury time. Instead of aiming for a goal, they settled for a point and hoped that the referee would grant additional time. The Patrickswell defence stood firm and we held out for a 0-13 to 0-11 victory.

UNDER 21 HURLERS: Patrickswell made a winning start to the Premier Hurling Championship against Ahane. The opening stages were completely dominated by the ‘Well as we established a 0-6 to 0-0 advantage after fifteen minutes. Darragh Ahern scored three of these points, while Jamie Dillon, Josh Considine and Jason Gillane contributed one point apiece. Ahane managed to stem the tide with their first point, but this was immediately cancelled out by a Patrickswell point. After twenty minutes, there was great uncertainty over whether an Ahane shot had crossed the line. While the players took their positions for a 65’, the referee and umpires agreed that the sliotar was over the line and the green flag was raised. The scoreline was now 0-7 to 1-1 in favour of Patrickswell. The goal did not cause much concern as Jason Gillane fired in a goal, while Darragh Ahern, Adam Carrig and Eoin Carroll added fresh points. Des Foley’s team were in firm control at 1-10 to 1-1, before Ahane notched two points before the interval. The half-time score was 1-10 to 1-3.

Our opponents were revitalised in the second half. Ahane scored three points without reply until Darragh Ahern responded with a point. Once again, Ahane came forward and claimed two consecutive points. The match had become competitive in the final quarter. With fifteen minutes remaining, Patrickswell led by 1-11 to 1-8. Thankfully, Darragh Ahern (0-2) and Jason Gillane created some breathing space when they extended the margin to six points at 1-14 to 1-8. In the final minutes, Ahane scored a second goal to slash the arrears to three points. There was no grandstand finale for Ahane as Patrickswell struck an insurance point to win by 1-15 (18) to 2-8 (14).

The next match is against Na Piarsaigh in Rhebogue on Tuesday February 12 at 7.30pm.

JUVENILE CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The Juvenile Club Annual General Meeting for 2018 was opened by new Chairman John Murphy. Secretary Peter Maher delivered his annual report to the audience. The year started with a Recruitment Event that was very well attended by young people and strongly supported by the senior players. Peter thanked everyone who assisted in the successful running of the event.

The next portion of the Secretary’s Report was a review of each age group. The U-6s trained on Friday evenings and greatly enjoyed themselves. The U-8s learnt the fundamentals of hurling and attended numerous blitzes and challenge matches. The U-10s were extremely busy with blitzes and attended an intercounty event in May against Portroe, Cashel and Ballybrown. The Parish League acted as the traditional season closer, where the young boys and girls had the chance to showcase their talents. Many thanks to the Fitzgerald family for donating equipment to the club and O’Brien’s Pharmacy for sponsoring the day.

The U-12s played in an eleven-a-side league and also trained with the U-14s. Their most memorable event was a blitz in Croke Park against Cork and Tipperary teams. The boys were given words of encouragement by Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane. The U-14s had a long season that stretched from February to December. They contested Féile and the championship, learning much along the way. The U-16s reached a semi-final and played very well.

Senior Club Chairman John McDermott addressed the meeting. He was delighted that John Murphy had taken the role of Juvenile Club Chairman. A major objective of the club is to identify young players in the locality and get them hurling with the ‘Well.

3rd January 2019

CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The Club’s Annual General Meeting was held in the clubhouse with a healthy attendance present. Martin Ryan delivered his final Secretary’s Report in his usual comprehensive style. The Senior hurlers were pipped in the County Championship semi-final by Doon, but they did manage to secure the City Championship against Ballybrown. The Junior A hurlers collected three trophies this season, following their successes in the City League, County League and City Championship. Their only defeat of the season was the County Championship semi-final loss to Kileedy.

The U-21 hurlers bowed out in the group stages in the spring. Our Minor hurlers had a fantastic season and battled all the way to the County Final. Unfortunately, Garryspillane produced a strong performance to deny Patrickswell. The Secretary thanked managers and selectors for facilitating the matches throughout the year. He complimented every Patrickswell player that lined out for Limerick, especially the All-Ireland winning trio of Cian Lynch, Diarmaid Byrnes and Aaron Gillane. Gratitude was expressed to main sponsors, Duggan Systems and the Greyhound Night Fundraising Committee led by Michael Walsh.

Martin commended the Camogie Club, Juvenile Club and Patrickswell National School for being so helpful and obliging. He concluded his report by expressing thanks to our Club Lotto organisers – Seamus O’Riordan, Tommy Reidy and Bernard Hayes, our County Board delegate Oliver Mann, our Munster Council delegate Paul Foley and the outgoing Chairman, Kieran Carroll. Condolences were offered to the families of Leonard Enright, Nelius Hayes and everyone who suffered a bereavement in 2018.

Kieran Carroll then delivered his farewell address as Chairman. The opening part of the Chairman’s Address focused on the contribution of Leonard Enright to Patrickswell and Limerick. Leonard was a through-and-through Patrickswell man, who led by example in every aspect of his life. He was a gentleman and always performed his duty – whether it was on the sporting field or in the world of politics. Kieran also lamented the sad passing of our former Treasurer, Nelius Hayes.

The Chairman was delighted that Limerick ended a 45-year wait to win an All-Ireland Championship. He was proud that Patrickswell had three representatives and that Cian Lynch had won an All-Star and Hurler of the Year award. He acknowledged the sterling service of outgoing Secretary Martin Ryan and Treasurer Seamus O’Riordan. In the years gone by, Kieran’s father Jimmy Carroll had been Club Chairman. It was Kieran’s goal to contribute to Patrickswell GAA Club like his father had done. He thanked his predecessor, Paul Foley, for handing over the reins in such good shape. He also acknowledged the support of Willie Leahy as his proposer for the Chairmanship. Sean Lynch and Nigel Carey were also singled out for their contributions as Vice Chairmen during his tenure.

When Kieran accepted the role of Chairman, he had two objectives – to keep our finances in good shape and to preside over success on the playing fields. He recognised the groundwork laid by Ciaran Carey and the subsequent County title delivered by Gary Kirby in 2016. Gary was praised as an outstanding club man who ended a 13-year Daly Cup drought and later claimed a Fitzgibbon Cup for UL. The Minor Team management were commended for their progress in reaching a County Final. The age profile of the team would indicate that there are many great years ahead.

Kieran noted that Patrickswell’s success is built on support and togetherness, irrespective of who holds the key roles. He was delighted that so many villagers worked voluntarily and gave back to the club. He was grateful to the Camogie and Juvenile clubs for their hard work and years of support to him. David Bulfin and Patrickswell National School were also commended for the development of players and promotion of hurling.

From a financial perspective, Kieran thanked the Finance Committee, the Greyhound Night Fundraising Committee and the stalwarts who run the Club Lotto every week. He acknowledged that it was difficult to raise money annually to allow for club development. There was praise for Finbar O’Brien’s hard work on the recent grant application. Patrickswell GAA Club wants to improve its facilities for future generations. He noted the support given by Limerick GAA and Munster GAA to our grant applications to date.

The work of Muirne Bennis, Mike Shinnors and Mary Shinnors in Scor was called out. Duggan Systems were thanked for their long association as club sponsor. In closing, Kieran noted that our current values are handed down from the Founding Fathers of the 1940s. Leadership is a tricky business and he always acted in the best interest of Patrickswell GAA Club. His legacy was to leave things in a better place.

President PJ O’Grady lauded the Chairman’s Address as the best speech he had ever heard at a Patrickswell GAA Club AGM. PJ appreciated the calm and rational manner that Kieran conducted his business. While the ‘Well did not claim a Senior County Championship title this season, other clubs envy us. We now have seven All-Ireland winners and Cian Lynch delivered an All-Star and Hurler of the Year. PJ was humbled by the large attendance at Leonard Enright’s funeral and the respectful marshalling on the day. He also offered his deepest sympathies to the family of Nelius Hayes. He spoke fondly about Muirne’s work with Scor and finally congratulated Martin Ryan and Seamus O’Riordan for their long service to the club.

Oliver Mann was delighted with how Patrickswell GAA Club was being run. He paid tribute to the outgoing Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Oliver highlighted that our club is well regarded around the county. He was thrilled by Limerick’s success in the All-Ireland Championship and lauded the book co-authored by Ciaran Crowe and Joe Lyons – “At Last”. In closing, Oliver praised the work of the National School and the Juvenile & Camogie clubs.

Monsignor Lane focused on the hard work of the Chairman, Officers and Committee. He was amazed at the time and effort invested in the running of our club. In the 21st century, it is incredible to witness the spirit of volunteerism. Monsignor saw the GAA Club as the vibrant heart of the community. It fostered a sense of belonging. Monsignor expressed his delight that Limerick won the Liam MacCarthy Cup and that Patrickswell produced three of its stars. In closing, he offered his condolences to the Enright family.

The following officers were elected for 2019: Chairman John McDermott, Secretary Aedin Foley, Treasurer Michael McDermott, Vice-Chairman Seamus O’Riordan, Assistant Secretaries Jim O’Herlihy and Bernard Hayes, PRO James McCarthy, Registrar Paddy Carrig, Culture & Language Officer Muirne Bennis and Health & Wellbeing Officer PJ O’Grady.
