MINOR HURLERS: Patrickswell were defeated in the Minor County Final against a strong Garryspillane team at the Gaelic Grounds. Jason Gillane gave Patrickswell a dream start when he scored a rampaging goal after just fifty seconds. The early shock seemed to rattle Garryspillane, but they recovered with two consecutive points to narrow the deficit. Josh Considine’s point put the ‘Well ahead by 1-1 to 0-2, but the Bouncers drew level with another pair of points. After fifteen minutes of play, the scoreboard was tied at 1-1 to 0-4. Calvin Carroll and Adam Carrig added fresh points to give Patrickswell another two-point lead; however the game turned sharply when Garryspillane struck a goal and two points to hit the front after 25 minutes. The ‘Well were now trailing by 1-6 to 1-3. The last few minutes of the first half were closely fought as Calvin Carroll’s point was immediately cancelled out. When the referee blew his whistle for half-time, we were still in contention at 1-7 to 1-4 behind.
The opening score of the second half was a point from Cormac Kerins. As the ‘Well tried to overhaul the margin, Garryspillane shut the door with two consecutive points. The scoreline was 1-9 to 1-5 before Calvin Carroll produced two points to trim the arrears to 1-9 to 1-7. The spectators were on the edge of their seats as every ball became fiercely contested. Unfortunately for John O’Donnell’s boys, Garryspillane produced three straight points to build a robust five-point lead at 1-12 to 1-7. The clock was running down at this stage. Despite two more points from Calvin Carroll, the Bouncers responded in kind. The full sixty minutes had been played and Garryspillane led by 1-14 to 1-9. The linesman indicated three minutes of injury time and the ‘Well dropped in short balls to force a goal. Our opponents held firm and the sole reward was a point from Jason Gillane. At the final whistle, Garryspillane were the 1-14 to 1-10 victors. Hard luck to the players and management for coming so close during an excellent season.
HURLER OF THE YEAR: Congratulations to Cian Lynch, who was awarded GAA Hurler of the Year at the Convention Centre in Dublin. The award was richly deserved for his marvellous contribution to Limerick’s All-Ireland campaign. In addition, Cian scooped an All Star place.
LEONARD ENRIGHT R.I.P.: The club were saddened to learn of the death of Patrickswell and Limerick hurler Leonard Enright. Leonard was a multiple All Star winner and got inducted to the GAA Hall of Fame in 2018. He was also a well-respected Councillor. Our sympathies to his family. May he rest in peace.

PARISH LEAGUE: The Parish League brought down the curtain on another great season for the younger players.
The day started with a Fundamental Frame Challenge Demonstration with Willie Walsh for U-14 and U-12 boys and girls. The frame places sliotars at various heights for players to strike.
Afterwards, a lone piper led our U-14 Camogie Champions and all the children taking part in the Parish League. It was a great morning of hurling for the children as they had the chance to showcase their talents to parents. The day ended with a raffle and a presentation to all children. The winning team were the Cheetahs, captained by Liam McGrath and Caoimhe Hennessy.
Many thanks to the family of Jacob Fitzgerald for donating the equipment and raffle prizes. Once again, we’re grateful to O’Brien’s Pharmacy for their continued support. We are looking forward to seeing the young players back in the spring.
MINOR HURLERS: The Minor Hurling Championship final against Garryspillane has been scheduled for Wednesday October 31 at 7.30pm in the Gaelic Grounds.
18th October 2018
SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered a cruel late defeat to Doon in the Senior Championship semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds. Calvin Carroll and Cian Lynch scored early points as the ‘Well made a positive start. However, Doon replied with a close-range goal to stem the tide. Diarmaid Byrnes and Aaron Gillane added their names to the scoresheet to put Patrickswell ahead by 0-4 to 1-0 after ten minutes. The middle of the first half was dominated by Gary Kirby’s men with three unanswered points. With a quarter of the match played, Patrickswell led by 0-7 to 1-1. Young Calvin Carroll was in sparkling form and he was rewarded with two excellent long-range points. The game was keenly contested and Doon always stayed in contention. At the twenty minute marker, the ‘Well led by 0-10 to 1-5. Over the next few minutes, Aaron Gillane and Calvin Carroll fired over points to maintain Patrickswell’s lead. Unfortunately Doon dominated the last five minutes and they plundered a goal and four points without reply. The complexion of the match had changed significantly as the East Men now held a 2-10 to 0-12 lead. Aaron Gillane snatched the final point of the first half to keep the teams one goal apart.
The second half began with Patrickswell being kept at arm’s length by Doon. Four points from Calvin Carroll, Diarmaid Byrnes, Tom O’Brien and Aaron Gillane were cancelled out by Doon to keep their three-point advantage at 2-14 to 0-17. There was another exchange of two points apiece as Patrickswell entered the last five minutes at one goal behind. The response was dramatic. Our All-Ireland trio of Aaron Gillane, Cian Lynch and Diarmaid Byrnes stunned Doon with three late points to equalise at 0-22 to 2-16. The referee indicated three minutes of stoppage time and every breaking ball was critical. The match was destined for a grandstand finale. Doon made the decisive breakthrough by scoring a point with fifty seconds left. The ‘Well could not muster an equaliser and Doon scraped through by a solitary point on a scoreline of 0-22 to 2-17. Hard luck to the players and management.
PARISH LEAGUE: The traditional end-of-season Parish League takes place on Sunday October 21 at 11.30am. It’s a great chance for our young players to showcase their talents.
We have been very fortunate that the Fitzgerald family have kindly picked our club to donate prizes and help get new equipment for the coming year for our underage teams. It is in memory of their son and brother, Jacob, who would have turned 18 this year. We are very grateful to them to have thought of us.
We are asking you all to please support this as it is the last event of the year. The tickets will be available to buy in the next few days and right up to the Parish League. They are available from Tony O’Briens Pharmacy, McDermotts Gala and Klassy Cuts for €5. The prizes are a 32″ Smart TV, a 7″ tablet and a €100 voucher for Patrickswell Club Gear.

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell overcame South Liberties in the County Championship quarter-final at the Gaelic Grounds. The opening quarter was keenly contested as Patrickswell opened a narrow 0-6 to 0-5 lead. In the latter stages of the opening half, the ‘Well’s class began to show as we pulled away by 1-13 to 0-9 at the interval.
The second half commenced with a purple patch from Gary Kirby’s men. Seven unanswered points were added to the scoreboard within fifteen minutes. Patrickswell were now 14 points ahead at 1-20 to 0-9. South Liberties edged back into the contest, but the final result was 1-26 to 1-13. The semi-final against Doon is next Sunday October 14 at 2pm.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers were eliminated from the County Championship after suffering their first defeat of the season. The opposition was a strong Killeedy team that were a dominant force. Patrickswell trailed by ten points at half-time with the scoreline at 1-12 to 0-5. The second half was extremely close, but the ‘Well could not reduce the margin. The final result was 1-18 to 0-11. It has been a great season that yielded three trophies. Hard luck to the players and management.

MINOR HURLERS: Our young hurlers produced a remarkable comeback to beat Na Piarsaigh in the Premier Minor Championship semi-final in Rathkeale. The first half began in a very competitive manner. Josh Considine, Calvin Carroll, John Kirby and Patrick Kirby scored Patrickswell’s early points. The teams were level at 0-4 apiece after fifteen minutes. Fresh points from Jason Gillane and Calvin Carroll established a narrow 0-6 to 0-4 advantage, but the ‘Well were pinned back by one goal and a point from the Caherdavin boys. Our players responded strongly with a barrage of three points before the interval and reached the dressing room at 0-9 to 1-5 ahead.
The second half began in worrying fashion for Patrickswell. Na Piarsaigh went on the attack and exploited their possession. By the midpoint of the second half, our opponents had scored seven points in contrast to Patrickswell’s two points. The Light Blues held a commanding 1-12 to 0-11 lead as the match entered its final quarter. Thankfully there was a response from John O’Donnell’s charges as Calvin Carroll (0-2) and Jason Gillane slashed the deficit to a solitary point at 1-12 to 0-14. When Na Piarsaigh increased their lead to two points, it appeared that Patrickswell would struggle to catch them. Remarkably, the game was blown wide open when Jason Gillane equalised with two points and Josh Considine shocked Na Piarsaigh with a low drive into the net. The ‘Well were now leading by 1-16 to 1-13 as the clock ran down to five minutes. Na Piarsaigh pushed forward and scored another point; however their hopes were dashed by late points from Clive Kirby and Cormac Kerins. Patrickswell claimed a famous 1-18 to 1-14 victory and set up a Championship Final against Garryspillane. Well done to the players and management.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell meet Killeedy in the County Championship semi-final in Ballyagran on Saturday October 6 at 2.15pm.
27th September 2018
SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell suffered a disappointing defeat to Na Piarsaigh in the final group match of the County Championship. The Caherdavin team made a lightning start and opened a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after just three minutes. Eventually Patrickswell crept into the match and began to take their points. After fifteen minutes, the scoreboard displayed a deficit of 1-6 to 0-4. Unfortunately, there was no reduction in Na Piarsaigh’s pressure. Six consecutive points established an eleven-point deficit of 1-12 to 0-4 after 25 minutes. Diarmaid Byrnes and Cian Lynch managed to contribute points before half-time. The margin was trimmed to 1-12 to 0-6 at the interval. Patrickswell faced an uphill battle to salvage the match.
The second half began in low scoring fashion. Aaron Gillane struck the first point after seven minutes of action, but Na Piarsaigh replied quickly. Peter Harty and Cian Lynch cut the lead to seven points at 1-13 to 0-9, but this was the closest that Patrickswell would come. The Light Blues produced a devastating spell of six unanswered points to seal the match. There were five minutes on the stadium clock and the ‘Well trailed by 1-20 to 0-10. Aaron Gillane fired a superb goal from a free and the final score was a 1-21 to 1-11 defeat. Gary Kirby’s men must turn their attention to a quarter-final against South Liberties in early October.

13th September 2018
SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell were defeated by Kilmallock in the fourth group match of the County Championship. The Balbec asserted their dominance in the opening ten minutes as they raced into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead. The ‘Well crept back into the contest when Cian Lynch struck our first point and Aaron Gillane followed up with another point. Within a few minutes, Aaron Gillane hit the back of the net and reduced the deficit to a single point at 0-6 to 1-2. Kilmallock increased their tempo and claimed an unanswered goal and two points to cement a 1-8 to 1-2 advantage after twenty minutes. The closing stages of the first half were shaded by the ‘Well and the arrears were reduced to 1-10 to 1-6 before the interval.
Patrickswell needed a strong beginning to the second half; however Kilmallock fired over three consecutive points to generate a seven-point lead at 1-13 to 1-6. The teams traded four points apiece as Gary Kirby’s men battled to close the gap. At the midpoint of the second half, Kilmallock were 1-16 to 1-10 ahead. Patrickswell needed to find a higher gear, but our opponents killed off the challenge with three straight points to establish an unassailable 1-19 to 1-10 lead with five minutes left. The last few minutes were evenly balanced and the match ended with a 1-22 to 1-12 defeat. The weekend’s other results mean that Patrickswell have reached the quarter-final. The last group stage match is against Na Piarsaigh in a fortnight.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A Hurlers are scheduled to play a County Championship quarter-final on Sunday September 16.
6th September 2018
SENIOR HURLERS: Our Senior hurlers returned to Championship action against Ballybrown after a lengthy three-month break. The parish neighbours were inseparable in the opening ten minutes as both sides amassed four points apiece. The Patrickswell scorers were Aaron Gillane, Cian Lynch, Josh Considine and Calvin Carroll. Peter Harty’s goal was a significant moment in the match and helped the ‘Well carve out a 1-6 to 0-4 lead after twenty minutes. However, Ballybrown mustered a goal and another point to slash the deficit to 1-6 to 1-5. Patrickswell increased their tempo and finished the first half with two points from Aaron Gillane and a point from Kevin O’Brien. The half-time score was 1-9 to 1-6 in favour of Gary Kirby’s men.
The second half began with a period of relative dominance from the ‘Well. The All-Ireland attacking duo of Aaron Gillane and Cian Lynch produced two points each as Patrickswell built a 1-15 to 1-9 buffer on forty minutes. Ballybrown tried their hardest to edge closer, yet Patrickswell were able to match their scoring rate. Aaron Gillane (0-2) and Diarmaid Byrnes (0-1) established a 1-19 to 1-12 lead with five minutes remaining. Our neighbours reduced the arrears to five points when they scored a goal in the last minute of normal time. Their search for a late comeback was in vain as Patrickswell won by 1-20 to 2-12. Congratulations to the players and management. It’s a hectic month with two more group matches against Kilmallock and Na Piarsaigh.
MINOR HURLERS: Our Minor hurlers will meet Garryspillane in a playoff to decide first and second place in the group. The match takes place in Caherconlish on Tuesday September 4 at 6.30pm.

LIAM MCCARTHY CUP HOMECOMING: There was a large crowd in attendance as Patrickswell welcomed the Liam McCarthy Cup, Cian, Diarmaid, Aaron and a selection of Limerick’s players. Sinead O’Brien performed songs on the night, while Matt O’Callaghan was the popular MC and DJ Mickey Mac kept the crowd entertained. Afterwards, the players signed autographs and posed for photographs with hundreds of children and adults. Pictures with the Liam McCarthy Cup also generated huge interest.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers claimed their third trophy of the season as they edged past Ballybrown in the City Championship Final. Patrickswell made a positive start and scored the opening two points from Calvin and Andrew Carroll. Ballybrown’s first point was then countered by a Brian Fitzgerald goal. The score after ten minutes was 1-2 to 0-1. Ballybrown increased their tempo and were rewarded with three unanswered points. The ‘Well stopped the revival through points from Calvin Carroll (0-2) and Paul O’Brien. Approaching half-time, Nigel Carey’s men were 1-5 to 0-4 ahead. However, our neighbours fought back and trimmed the lead to 1-5 to 0-7. Calvin Carroll scored the final point of the first half to establish a two-point margin of 1-6 to 0-7.
The second half began with an exchange of two points apiece. Tom Nolan and Calvin Carroll were the Patrickswell scorers as the scoreline changed to 1-8 to 0-9. Ballybrown notched another point to move within a single score again. The ‘Well were in no mood to surrender the lead and shocked Ballybrown with a salvo of three goals and a point within ten minutes. Paul O’Brien started the onslaught with a fine goal, Andrew Carroll struck a point and Calvin Carroll starred with two quick-fire goals. The advantage after fifty minutes was a commanding ten points at 4-9 to 0-11. To their immense credit, Ballybrown refused to lie down. The Clarina men plundered 2-1 in just a few minutes to trim the deficit to four points at 4-10 to 2-12. The spectators were set for a grandstand finale in the last five minutes. Ballybrown’s point moved them with striking distance, but Patrickswell responded immediately. Once again, Ballybrown raised the white flag to reach injury time at 4-11 to 2-14. Their search for an equalising goal was thwarted as Patrickswell held firm. Garry Murphy accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and thanked our opponents for accommodating the postponement.

Over the space of fifteen minutes, Patrickswell notched seven points from Peter Harty (0-2), Josh Considine, Calvin Carroll, Kevin O’Brien, Jason Gillane and Lar Considine. The scoreboard on 20 minutes displayed a 0-8 to 0-4 advantage to Gary Kirby’s men. Ballybrown stemmed the tide with a fresh point, but Lar Considine, Jack Kelleher, Peter Harty and Seanie O’Brien extended the lead to 0-12 to 0-6 after 25 minutes. The Clarina men recovered with a trio of consecutive points just before the half-time whistle. Fortunately, Jack Kelleher popped up with a point to put Patrickswell 0-13 to 0-10 ahead at the interval.

Seanie O’Brien and Peter Harty fired over additional points as the pendulum swung in Patrickswell’s favour. Ballybrown showed great resilience and secured two points to trail by 0-19 to 0-18. 12th July 2018
JUNIOR A HURLERS: It was a remarkable week for the Junior A Hurlers as they won the County League trophy and maintained their 100% record in the City Championship in dramatic fashion.
The first fixture of the week was a stunning comeback win against neighbours Ballybrown in the City Championship. Our parish rivals started at a high tempo and were rewarded with a 2-4 to 0-1 lead after just ten minutes. Patrickswell were unfamiliar with such large deficits and struggled to cope with the Clarina men. David Woulfe’s two points managed to narrow the gap, but Ballybrown’s third goal put them in the ascendancy. At half-time, Ballybrown held a twelve-point lead of 3-8 to 0-5. It was the biggest challenge faced by our Junior A hurlers this season.
The second half started with a Patrickswell blitz. Paul O’Brien and Jason Gillane began to exert their influence and Ballybrown were forced onto the back foot. The ‘Well accumulated a large haul of 2-5 before Ballybrown managed to register another point. After 50 minutes, Ballybrown’s lead had been slashed to two points at 3-9 to 2-10. The tide had swung in favour of Nigel Carey’s men. Jason Gillane’s decisive goal put the ‘Well ahead for the very first time at 3-11 to 3-9. By the full-time whistle, three insurance points had been added to cement a fine 3-14 to 3-10 victory. Our defence had limited Ballybrown to just two points in the entire second half.
Two days later, the Junior A hurlers claimed the County League crown with an emphatic win against Adare. While Adare scored the first point of the match, Patrickswell responded with 1-5 without reply. The scores were shared between Paul O’Brien’s goal and points from Andrew Carroll, Johnny McMahon, Jamie Dillon, Jason Gillane and David Woulfe. Adare managed to slow down the rate of scoring; however Patrickswell held a strong 1-10 to 0-4 lead at half-time.
The second half was again dominated by Patrickswell. Calvin Carroll scored a mesmerising solo goal and his team-mates chipped in seven more points. Adare produced only three points in the second half. Gary Murphy was presented with the County League trophy after a 2-17 to 0-7 triumph. Well done to the players and management. SENIOR HURLERS: In the City Championship semi-final replay against Monaleen, Patrickswell made no mistake with a crushing win of 7-17 to 1-7. The replay was in marked contrast to the highly competitive original draw.
The game was played in baking heat and it was the ‘Well that were in scorching form. Within the first five minutes, Darragh Ahern and Peter Harty scored goals to put Monaleen on the back foot. The intense pressure continued as Patrickswell notched 3-7 without reply in the first quarter of an hour. Lar Considine was in prolific form as he fired over four consecutive points. When Monaleen snatched a goal, Patrickswell simply replied with a fourth goal. The half-time scoreboard in Clarina reflected the one-way traffic at 4-11 to 1-4. There was little doubt of the outcome.
The management allowed no drop in standards in the second half as the ’Well continued the onslaught. Andrew Carroll scored a fifth goal, before Peter Harty added a sixth goal. There were also points from Seanie O’Brien, Darragh Ahern, Calvin Carroll and David Woulfe. The icing on the cake was a late seventh goal for Seanie O’Brien to cap a magnificent 7-17 to 1-7 win.
In the All County Hurling League match against Adare, the ’Well battled hard against their neighbours, but succumbed to a 3-16 to 2-16 defeat. Patrickswell have now played all their fixtures and sit joint top of the table; albeit other clubs have games in hand to reach the Top Two.

Unfortunately, the ‘Well were unable to stem the tide and they trailed by 3-11 to 0-4 at the break. The second half was a closer contest as Patrickswell stood firm and played some fine hurling. Taken in isolation, the second half was all square. However, the final result was 3-17 to 0-7 for Kilmallock.
The final pool match is scheduled against Adare on Sunday March 11 in Rathkeale.
