Club Notes 2017

21st December 2017

Club Annual General Meeting: The 2017 Annual General Meeting was recently held in the clubhouse, with a modest attendance on the night. The meeting started with the Secretary’s Report from Martin Ryan. Martin gave a full and detailed account of the year’s activities for each team. The Senior Hurlers took part in the All County Hurling League and finished up with a record of four wins and three defeats. Unfortunately, these results were not enough to contest the League final. In the City Championship, Patrickswell emerged triumphant in the final against Monaleen by 2-4 to 0-18. In the Senior County Championship, we progressed from the group stages with a record of four wins and one defeat (to Na Piarsaigh). As a result of the single loss, Patrickswell qualified for the quarter-final against Ballybrown. The gap had closed since the neighbours last met in the 2016 County Final. However, Patrickswell still came out as winners after a tough replay. In the semi-final, Kilmallock proved too strong on the day and the Daly Cup was relinquished.

The Junior A hurlers had a very active season. Patrickswell scooped the City League trophy and reached the County League semi-final, where we lost to a strong Kilmallock team. In the Junior City Championship, the ‘Well were superb in the group stages and contested the City final against a tough St. Patrick’s team. Despite a great effort, the Rhebogue club were a step ahead. In the County Championship quarter-final, Patrickswell were pitted against Kilmallock again. In a repeat of the League, the Balbec were too strong for the ‘Well.

The U-21 campaign was extremely brief as the group stages contained only three clubs. Patrickswell beat Adare, but lost in the dying minutes against Ahane. The Minor Hurlers had a difficult start to the summer as they lost three consecutive matches. Thankfully, there was a turnaround in fortunes as their remaining four matches ended with a win, two draws and one defeat.

The Secretary congratulated Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane for winning the All-Ireland U-21 hurling championship and he saluted Aaron Gillane for winning Munster U-21 Player of the Year. Martin thanked everyone who made the Victory Dance and Golf Classic such memorable events. He was also very complimentary about the Juvenile and Camogie Club’s superb “Pride of the Parish” day. Best wishes were extended to Nigel Carey in his capacity as new Juvenile Club Chairman and Ciarán Crowe as the outgoing Principal of Patrickswell National School. Martin recognised Oliver Mann’s five-year tenure as County Board Chairman and offered his sincere condolences to the bereaved during the year.

Seamus O’Riordan delivered his Treasurer’s Report to the members. He mentioned the ongoing need to control costs and improve revenues to put the club on an even keel. Seamus expressed his gratitude to Bernard Hayes, Tommy Reidy and the Lotto sellers for their diligent support of the Club Lotto. He was also appreciative to John McDermott for the use of his facilities and the Camogie & Juvenile clubs for their energy.

The keynote speech of the evening was Kieran Carroll’s Chairman’s Address. Kieran congratulated Martin Ryan for giving ten years of loyal service as Club Secretary and the vigilance that he brought to the role. There was also an acknowledgement of the great service that Oliver Mann had undertaken as the County Board Chairman. Kieran was fulsome in his praise of the Victory Dance in February and the hard work that made it a resounding success. The Chairman was naturally disappointed that the Senior Hurlers did not retain the Daly Cup, but he could not fault their effort. Undoubtedly, it was the Camogie Club that held pride of place this season. The Junior County Championship and promotion to Intermediate were the highlight of the year on the playing fields. Kieran was grateful to Louise O’Donnell, Aedin Foley and Gloria O’Donnell for their excellent stewardship of the Camogie Club. There was appreciation of the work done by Nigel Carey and the newly established Coaching Committee.

Kieran thanked Patrickswell National School (Ciarán Crowe, Paul O’Connor and David Bulfin) for their contribution to the club’s development. He was certain that David Bulfin would carry the torch of Ciarán Crowe. There was sympathy offered on the death of Vice-Principal John Nestor, who passed away during the year. The Chairman flagged the “Pride of the Parish” event as a shining success and the product of great collaboration between the Camogie and Juvenile clubs. There is a need for everyone to chip in to help with the running of club affairs. The acquisition of the adjacent site is ongoing.

Kieran expressed his gratitude to the Scór organisers of Mary Shinnors, Mike Shinnors and Muirne Bennis. He offered condolences to bereaved families and best wishes to Leonard Enright. In closing, the Chairman reaffirmed the club’s core value of “respect”. He thanked Duggan Systems and Fitzgerald Electrical, before congratulating our Intercounty representatives.

The next segment of the Annual General Meeting were short addresses from President PJ O’Grady, County Board Chairman Oliver Mann, Munster County Representative Paul Foley, Monsignor Lane and Fr. Mike Cussen. PJ O’Grady paid tribute to Ciarán Crowe and his 25 years of service to Patrickswell National School. PJ was certain that David Bulfin would keep up the good work of the past. Sympathy was expressed to the Nestor family, upon the death of Vice-Principal John Nestor. PJ was thrilled by the Victory Dance, the “Pride of the Parish” event and the Junior Camogie Championship win.

Oliver Mann thanked Patrickswell GAA Club for giving him a grounding and knowledge of the GAA and its operation. He appreciated the support that he received over five years as County Board Chairman. He commented that progress was being made in Limerick and pointed out the supply of players from Patrickswell to Limerick’s Intercounty teams. Oliver was grateful for the support that the club gives Limerick fundraisers on an annual basis. While it is tough to run a club, it is great for the community.

Paul Foley pointed out the need to celebrate volunteerism in a commercial world. He was deeply appreciative of Martin Ryan’s long tenure as Secretary and Oliver Mann’s spell as County Board Chairman. Paul gave his full backing to the club’s development programme and wants to get the adjacent pitch. He also expressed optimism that the new Munster Championship format is an exciting opportunity for Limerick. He commended Aaron Gillane on his Munster U-21 Player of the Year award and wished the officers the best.

Monsignor Lane and Fr. Cussen were delighted by the impact that Patrickswell GAA Club has on the community. It is acknowledged as a great outlet for young people and builds immense community spirit.

Willie Leahy stepped down as Vice-Chairman and the club will search for a new Secretary. Nigel Carey, Damien Gillane and John O’Donnell were ratified as Junior A, U-21 and Minor managers respectively.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year: Patrickswell GAA Club wishes all its members and supporters a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

19th October 2017

CAMOGIE: There were jubilant scenes in Mungret as Patrickswell’s Junior Ladies won the County Championship against Ballybrown and secured promotion to Intermediate level.

Ballybrown made a strong start and were quickly into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after ten minutes. Sarah Gillane then registered the ‘Well’s opening point and eased some nerves. The remainder of the first half was a close contest. There were fresh points from Chelsea McCarthy, Leah Van Veen and Sarah Gillane before the interval. The half-time score was 0-5 to 0-4 in favour of Ballybrown.

The second half started brightly for Patrickswell when Ailish Byrnes rattled the net with a fine solo goal. The momentum was now swinging in our favour as Sarah Gillane and Ciara Barry tacked on more points. With fifteen minutes left, Patrickswell led by 1-6 to 0-7. However, our parish neighbours showed their grit and equalised with two points. It was hard to separate the two sides. Thankfully there was a rousing finish from the Patrickswell ladies. Three points were scored in quick succession to build up a cushion. Ballybrown pressed hard for a goal in the eight minutes of injury time, but the blue defence held firm. The final score was 1-9 to 0-9.

LEGENDS vs PRETENDERS MATCH: Preparations continue for the Legends vs Pretenders (Mentors) match on Sunday October 29 at 2pm. If you wish to advertise, please get in touch with the camogie club.

5th October 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell were eliminated from the Senior County Championship after a semi-final defeat to Kilmallock. Despite Kevin O’Brien striking an early point, the Balbec notched a decisive goal in the second minute. Aaron Gillane scored two points in the opening ten minutes as Kilmallock held a 1-3 to 0-3 advantage. Patrickswell then had a purple patch and Gary Kirby’s men were able to draw level at 1-3 to 0-6 with consecutive points from Lar Considine, Diarmaid Byrnes and Barry Foley. Unfortunately, our opponents halted the Blue surge and responded with a devastating salvo of four unanswered points. Aaron Gillane intervened with an important point just before the half-time whistle as the ‘Well trailed by 0-7 to 1-7.

The second half started on a positive note when Aaron Gillane trimmed the deficit to two points. However, the game was effectively decided when Kilmallock increased their tempo and were rewarded with four points in a row. With fifteen minutes left on the clock, the score was arrears of six points at 0-8 to 1-11. The remainder of the match was evenly poised as every single Patrickswell point was cancelled out by Kilmallock. Despite five scores from Aaron Gillane (0-2), Diarmaid Byrnes, Jack Kelleher and Peter Harty, the margin was not reduced. There was five minutes on the clock and Patrickswell trailed by 0-13 to 1-16. Kilmallock closed out the dying stages with two insurance points to win by 1-18 to 0-13.

Hard luck to the players and management. It was a great achievement to reach the semi-final.

UNDER 10 HURLERS: Patrickswell played Bruff, Newcastlewest and Kilmallock in a blitz. It was a great performance and effort from all the boys in their three games.

UNDER 12 HURLERS: Patrickswell U-12s won their Hurling Final against Kildimo in UL.

28th September 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Our Senior hurlers booked their place in the County Championship semi-final after overcoming Ballybrown in a tight quarter-final replay. Patrickswell started brightly and took the lead with early points from Aaron Gillane and Kevin O’Brien. Within ten minutes, Aaron Gillane added two more scores to put his team 0-4 to 0-1 ahead. Our parish neighbours were resilient and edged ahead with a flurry of four unanswered points at 0-5 to 0-4. Aaron Gillane stepped in to equalise, but Ballybrown responded with three fresh points to surge 0-8 to 0-5 ahead. Just before the half-time whistle, Aaron Gillane popped up again to reduce the interval deficit to 0-8 against 0-6. The match was proving as competitive as the first encounter.

At the start of the second half, Patrickswell cancelled the Ballybrown lead with scores from Andrew Carroll and Diarmaid Byrnes. The teams were inseparable. Aaron Gillane (0-2), Seanie O’Brien and Barry Foley chipped in to ensure parity of 0-12 apiece after forty-five minutes. Thankfully, Patrickswell were able to find an extra gear as their opponents faded. The game was decided in a devastating spell of five straight points from Aaron Gillane (0-3), Kevin O’Brien and Peter Harty. In the end, the ‘Well triumphed by 0-17 to 0-13.

The semi-final against Kilmallock is set for Saturday September 30.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell bowed out of the County Championship after losing to a strong Kilmallock team in the quarter-final.

CAMOGIE: The Junior ladies beat Galbally by 4-7 to 0-8 points, which puts them second place in the table and sets them up for a semi- final against Galbally again. The semi-final is scheduled for Sunday October 8 at 3.00pm.

The U-12 girls beat Bruff in their penultimate game of the league. Their last game is against Monaleen on Thursday September 28 at 6.30pm. The U-10 girls partook in a blitz last week and their County Blitz is on Saturday September 30 at 10am in Kileedy.

The annual Parish League is fixed for October 29 at 11.30am and promises to be a great day out for the family this year.

21st September 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell and Ballybrown played out an epic draw in the County Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final at the Gaelic Grounds. The opening exchanges were finely balanced as Aaron Gillane, Mark Carmody and Diarmaid Byrnes’ points were cancelled out by Ballybrown. After ten minutes, the parish neighbours were deadlocked at 0-3 apiece. Patrickswell’s best spell came in the middle of the first half, with a run of four unanswered points from Diarmaid Byrnes (0-2), Aaron Gillane and Andrew Carroll. The scoreboard displayed 0-7 to 0-3 after twenty minutes and confidence was high. However, Ballybrown were fiercely committed and they eliminated the deficit with four consecutive points to make it 0-7 apiece. Aaron Gillane had to step in with two points before the interval to halt the Ballybrown surge. The half-time score was 0-9 to 0-7 for Gary Kirby’s men.

The second half started with another key point from Aaron Gillane to establish a three-point cushion at 0-10 to 0-7. The next five minutes proved detrimental for Patrickswell when our neighbours hit the front with a barrage of 1-2. For the first time, Ballybrown were in the box seat at 1-9 to 0-10 ahead. Kevin O’Brien’s point reduced the deficit to a single score, yet Ballybrown were buoyed by three fresh points. With fifteen minutes left, they held 1-12 to 0-11 lead. Patrickswell needed a decisive response and the supporters were not disappointed. Aaron Gillane (0-2) and Diarmaid Byrnes again slashed the lead to one point at 1-12 to 0-14. The clock was showing five minutes left when the Clarina men notched another two points to edge ahead at 1-14 to 0-14. To the neutral observer, it seemed like Ballybrown’s day.

Cian Lynch joined the action and was instrumental in a compelling late comeback. Aaron Gillane, Cian Lynch and Kevin O’Brien scored consecutive points to draw level well into injury time. Amazingly, Diarmaid Byrnes still had time to put Patrickswell ahead at 0-18 to 1-14. The great escape looked on the cards before Ballybrown were awarded a late free. It was the deciding stroke of the match. The player held his nerve and Ballybrown forced a dramatic replay. Patrickswell survived a stern examination to fight another day. The replay is next Saturday September 23 at 4.45pm.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers will contest the County Championship quarter-final against Kilmallock on Sunday September 24 at 12 noon in Bruff.

CAMOGIE: The Junior Ladies contested a top-of the-table clash with Ballybrown and narrowly lost by 2-6 to 2-5. Patrickswell were two goals ahead after ten minutes, before Ballybrown recovered to 2-3 apiece. It was point for point in the second half, with Ballybrown having the edge at the end. The Juniors are out again Sunday September 24 in Galbally at 3pm.

7th September 2017

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers were defeated by St. Patrick’s in the City Championship final. The opening exchanges were keenly contested as points from Peter Harty and Paudie Maher put Patrickswell 0-2 to 0-1 ahead. The Rhebogue men fired over three points without reply to take the lead at 0-4 to 0-2. In the middle of the first half, the ‘Well had a brief dominant spell where Cillian O’Reilly’s goal was sandwiched between two additional Peter Harty points. The scoreboard displayed 1-4 to 0-4 after fifteen minutes.

St. Patrick’s trimmed the deficit to the minimum when they notched two unanswered points, but Peter Harty restored the margin with two points himself. Unfortunately, St. Patrick’s finished the opening half with great intensity and were rewarded with a goal and two points. The interval score was 1-8 to 1-6 to St. Patrick’s.

The second half was a tense affair. The match was played in heavy rain that dampened creative hurling. While Peter Harty scored two points early on, the match seemed to be slipping away when our opponents claimed a goal. There were fifteen minutes left to recover a 2-9 to 1-8 arrears. Pa Mann, Peter Harty and Owen McNamara scored points to put Patrickswell within one score at 2-10 to 1-11. However, St. Patrick’s claimed the insurance point and triumphed by 2-11 to 1-11. Hard luck to the players and management. The next match is a County quarter-final.

MINOR HURLERS: The Minor hurlers closed their Premier Championship campaign with a defeat to Na Piarsaigh. Patrickswell were extremely competitive for most of the first half and led by 0-5 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. The advantage could not be held and the Caherdavin side were buoyed by two goals just before the whistle. The half-time score was 0-6 to 2-7.

The second half witnessed Na Piarsaigh taking their scores and beginning to pull away. Patrickswell players battled their hardest, but they couldn’t stem the tide. The final score was a 2-18 to 0-10 defeat.

CAMOGIE: Well done to Kate Feasey on her Croke Park debut during the All-Ireland Final and her star performance in the INTO Mini Sevens. We’re very proud of you.

The Junior A Camogie ladies beat Monaleen by 6-14 to 1-5.

31st August 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers beat Cappamore in the final group match of the County Championship. However, the margin of victory was not enough to secure a direct semi-final berth. Patrickswell will participate in the quarter-final.

The first half was a competitive encounter as both sides battled strongly. At half-time, Patrickswell led by 0-9 to 0-5. However, Gary Kirby’s men turned on the style in the second half and began to pull away from Cappamore. With fifteen minutes left, the advantage had grown to fifteen points at 2-17 to 0-8. To their credit, Cappamore steadied themselves and the final result was 2-23 to 1-11. Well done to the players and management for reaching yet another knockout stage.

24th August 2017

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers defeated Ballybrown in the semi-final of the City Championship at Claughaun. The wet conditions and sodden pitch made hurling difficult; however Patrickswell were quickly off the mark with a goal from Cillian O’Reilly after five minutes. Ballybrown responded with their opening point. Minutes later, Owen McNamara sized up a free from about seventy yards. His shot fizzed towards goal and eluded the Ballybrown goalkeeper to establish a 2-0 to 0-1 advantage after ten minutes.

The remainder of the first half was played at a less frantic pace. Patrickswell added another three points and led their neighbours by 2-5 to 0-4 at half-time. The second half began in a positive manner as David Woulfe and Geoffrey Foley contributed early point to establish a nine-point lead at 2-7 to 0-4. There was an element of nervousness when Ballybrown secured four consecutive points to slash the advantage to five points. Thankfully Patrickswell finished on a high note when Peter Harty and Paudie Maher (0-2) added the gloss to a 2-10 to 0-8 victory.

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers play the final group match of the County Championship against Cappamore in Bruff on Saturday August 26 at 6.30pm. To reach the semi-final directly, Patrickswell need to outperform Na Piarsaigh’s and Adare’s results if all clubs win. Otherwise, the route will lead to the quarter-final instead.

LIMERICK UNDER 21 HURLERS: Congratulations to the Limerick U-21 hurlers and our local contingent of Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane for reaching another All-Ireland final after a tough victory over Galway.

17th August 2017

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A Hurlers had a mixed week in the City Championship as they cruised past Monaleen, but were outdone by St. Patrick’s.

Patrickswell were dominant against Monaleen and built a 0-5 to 0-2 lead after fifteen minutes. Cillian O’Reilly was in sparkling form as Patrickswell reached the interval at 0-9 to 0-3 ahead. Unfortunately for Monaleen, the second half was one-way traffic as they failed to score and the ‘Well racked up a final score of 1-20 to 0-3. The goal came from Cillian O’Reilly.

Rolling forward just two days, Patrickswell faced St. Patrick’s in the top-of the-table encounter. Peter Harty’s 0-2 and a point from Geoffrey Foley opened a nice 0-3 to 0-1 advantage after ten minutes. St. Patrick’s were tough opponents and retaliated with 1-3 unanswered. Points from Geoffrey Foley and Cillian O’Reilly steadied the team and the deficit was 0-5 to 1-4 at the break.

The second half witnessed a remarkable start as Peter Harty broke through the St. Patrick’s defence to score a goal. Two minutes later, he dispatched a penalty into the bottom corner. Patrickswell looked in the driving seat at 2-6 to 1-5. Despite having 14 men, the Rhebogue men plundered three consecutive points to minimise the deficit at 2-6 to 1-8.

Peter Harty completed a remarkable hat trick; however Patrickswell were ravaged by a flurry of five points. With ten minutes left, the scoreboard was 3-6 to 1-13 against Damien Gillane’s men. While Peter Harty equalised with a point, St. Patrick’s surged forward and ended the contest with a devastating salvo of 1-3 in a row. The final score was 3-8 to 2-16. Patrickswell were already guaranteed a City semi-final berth.

3rd August 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell produced an emphatic performance to defeat Monaleen in the fourth fixture of the County Championship. Jack Kelleher scored the first point of the match, but there was a swift equaliser from Monaleen. The opening ten minutes were very competitive as Patrickswell nudged ahead by 0-5 to 0-4.

From that stage onwards, Patrickswell took charge and blitzed their opponents with another 3-9 accumulated in twenty minutes. Barry Foley’s shot took a wicked deflection into the net to begin the onslaught. Lar Considine snatched a second goal shortly afterwards before Thomas O’Brien added a third goal. In the meantime, the midfielders and forwards were racking up points on the scoreboard. By the halftime whistle, Gary Kirby’s men were leading by seventeen points at 3-14 to 0-6.

The second half witnessed more resistance from Monaleen. Patrickswell were almost matched point-for-point after the break. Kevin O’Brien’s trio of points put the ‘Well ahead by 3-23 to 0-11 with fifteen minutes left. It seemed that Patrickswell were on schedule to overhaul Na Piarsaigh at the top of the group. Monaleen were able to stem the flow and the match ended on a scoreline of 3-25 to 0-15.

MINOR HURLERS: Our minor hurlers continued their resurgence in the Premier Championship with a 2-14 to 3-11 draw with Garryspillane. The result gives Patrickswell one victory and two draws from six games.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers maintained their impressive 100% record in the City Championship after notching a fourth consecutive victory. Patrickswell and Old Christians were equally matched in the opening exchanges, but our greater accuracy built a 0-6 to 0-4 lead within fifteen minutes. Peter Harty’s goal established a five-point buffer at 1-6 to 0-4; however Old Christians closed the first half in the ascendency. Their surge narrowed the Patrickswell lead to the minimum of 1-8 to 0-10 at half-time.

The second half started slowly, with points and chances at a premium. Peter Harty’s second goal seemed to turn the match decisively in the Well’s favour at 2-10 to 0-11. Two additional points were secured to put Patrickswell seven points ahead with only ten minutes left on the clock. To their credit, Old Christians poured forward in a bid to close the gap. Their ambitions were rewarded with a late goal that created some late tension. Thankfully, Patrickswell stood firm and won the match by 2-14 to 1-13.

Our next match is scheduled for Saturday July 29 at 7pm against Monaleen at Claughaun.

Senior hurlers: Patrickswell concluded their County League campaign with an impressive win over Adare. The opening exchanges were relatively balanced and the teams were level at 0-4 apiece after ten minutes of play. Our opponents managed to nudge in front at 0-7 to 0-5. However Patrickswell experienced a purple patch and scored five consecutive points (Mark Carmody 0-2, with 0-1 each for Andrew Carroll, Diarmaid Byrnes and Jack Kelleher) to reach the interval at 0-10 to 0-8 ahead.

The second half was a few minutes old when Kevin O’Brien scored a decisive goal. There were additional points from Andrew Carroll and Diarmaid Byrnes as the ‘Well took charge at 1-12 to 0-9. Adare were undaunted at the six-point deficit and drew level with an unanswered flurry of a goal and three points. While the momentum appeared to swing to Adare, Gary Kirby’s men reached the higher gears and pulled away with a sequence of points from Jamie Dillon (0-2), Andrew Carroll, Diarmaid Byrnes, Kevin O’Brien and Cillian O’Reilly. The score was 1-18 to 1-13 with five minutes left. Thankfully, Patrickswell managed to weather a late Adare surge to claim a 1-20 to 1-15 triumph.

Junior A hurlers: Patrickswell secured their third consecutive victory in the City Championship when they held off neighbours Ballybrown in Clarina. The first half was a masterclass of controlled hurling as the ‘Well limited Ballybrown to a solitary point. Meanwhile, Peter Harty was in prolific form as he plundered 0-6. He was assisted by Paudie Maher’s goal and point, while Timmy Sheehan and Pa Mann also chipped in with points. The scoreboard displayed an emphatic 1-9 to 0-1 lead at the half-time whistle.

Ballybrown scored three straight points at the start of the second half to trail by 1-9 to 0-4. Peter Harty’s point stopped their momentum for a few minutes, but Ballybrown raised the tension with another barrage of seven consecutive points. The scoreboard was now extremely close at 1-10 to 0-11 with five minutes left. The Clarina men were searching for the goal to complete an unlikely comeback, but Peter O’Reilly put daylight between the teams with a superb insurance point in the closing stages. Patrickswell won by 1-11 to 0-11, but they were made to work very hard for their success.

Minor hurlers: The Minor hurlers registered their first victory of the Championship with a decent 2-11 to 1-10 win over Adare away.

6th July 2017

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers had a fantastic week as they secured two City Championship wins in six days. Their first match was against Na Piarsaigh in heavy rain. Patrickswell controlled the first half and had raced into a 1-6 to 0-2 lead within fifteen minutes. However, the Caherdavin men notched two goals in five minutes to reduce the arrears to 2-9 to 2-3 by half-time. The second half was also dominated by Patrickswell as the forward line ensured a seventeen point advantage of 4-15 to 2-4 with ten minutes left. Incredibly, Na Piarsaigh plundered three goals in five minutes to slash the gap. It was in vain as the ‘Well clinched a 4-16 to 5-4 opening day victory.

In the second match of the week, the Junior As faced a stiff test from Crecora. Patrickswell raced into an early three-point lead before our neighbours reacted with two points. Peter Harty and Owen McNamara inspired the ‘Well to establish a 0-6 to 0-2 scoreline after fifteen minutes. Crecora increased their own tempo and hit the net to draw level at 0-6 to 1-3. The first half ended in stalemate at 0-8 to 1-5 when Peter Harty points were cancelled out. The second half was a tough battle. Midway through the action, the scores were level at 0-11 to 1-8. The game was impossible to call. Jamie Dillon’s point was followed up by a sizzling Cillian O’Reilly goal that changed the complexion of the fixture. Patrickswell were able to stave off a late Crecora surge to win by 1-13 to 1-10. Their next scheduled match is against Ballybrown on Saturday July 8.

MINOR HURLERS: The Minor hurlers were edged out by Kilmallock by 2-16 to 0-21. The boys’ next match is away to Adare on Friday July 7 at 7.30pm.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers won the City League Championship after an exciting tussle against Ballybrown at Childers Road. The ‘Well made a great start when Aaron Carmody hit the net in the early stages of the first half. After fifteen minutes, Patrickswell were 1-4 to 0-2 ahead. Ballybrown ramped up the pressure and were rewarded with four consecutive points. At the interval, Patrickswell led their parish neighbours by just 1-4 to 0-6.

The second half was a tight battle for fifteen minutes. Cillian O’Reilly (0-1) and Peter Harty (0-2) managed to keep Patrickswell ahead at 1-7 to 0-9. In the middle of the second half, Patrickswell enjoyed a period of dominance and opened a four-point lead with fresh scores from Peter Harty, Cillian O’Reilly and Kelvin Lynch. There was ten minutes remaining and the ‘Well were 1-10 to 0-9 ahead. Ballybrown knew that they required a goal and they pushed hard to get it. Gary Murphy produced a sparkling save to deny a certain goal as Ballybrown were kept at bay. They managed a solitary point and Keith Dundon collected the City League trophy after a 1-10 to 0-10 win.

The players had 48 hours’ rest before facing Kilmallock in the County League semi-final. Patrickswell kept in touch during the first half and were in contention at 0-7 to 0-6 behind at the break. At one stage of the second half, the ‘Well equalised at 0-8 apiece, but fatigue began to set in. Kilmallock increased their tempo and rattled Patrickswell with a goal to lead by 1-11 to 0-9. The Balbec closed out the game in a ruthless manner and knocked out Damien Gillane’s men by 1-17 to 0-11. Hard luck to the players for losing the County semi-final, but congratulations for scooping the City title.

25th May 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Our Senior hurlers overcame a stringent test from Monaleen to win the City Championship. While Andrew Carroll struck the opening point of the match, it was Monaleen who surged into a 0-7 to 0-2 lead within fifteen minutes. Thankfully, Patrickswell were able to stem the tide and recovered with four points divided between Lar Considine and Jack Kelleher. The scoreboard displayed 0-8 to 0-6 for Monaleen when Kevin O’Brien embarked on a mazy run that ended with a superb solo goal. However, our opponents reached half-time with a 0-12 to 1-7 lead.

The second half produced a better display from the ‘Well. Consecutive points from Lar Considine, Kevin O’Brien and Mark Carmody levelled the match at 1-11 to 0-14. The game swung decisively for Gary Kirby’s men when Mark Carmody notched a second goal. Patrickswell were able to cement the advantage with points from Jack Kelleher (0-2) and Kevin O’Brien. The result seemed certain with Patrickswell holding a 2-14 to 0-15 cushion with five minutes left. Monaleen drove forward with determination, but they fell short with three points. 18th May 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell faced a stiff challenge from Na Piarsaigh in the second instalment of the County Championship. The game was extremely competitive in the first half as both teams matched each other blow for blow. Patrickswell took an early 0-3 to 0-1 lead; however the Caherdavin men responded decisively with an unanswered goal and two points to lead by 1-3 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes.

Patrickswell clawed their way back into the match as Andrew Carroll’s goal was sandwiched between three Aaron Gillane points. The first half closed with Na Piarsaigh equalising with two points before Aaron Gillane put the ‘Well into an interval lead of 1-8 to 1-6.

In the second half, Gary Kirby’s players started brightly. The margin was stretched to 1-10 to 1-7. Suddenly Na Piarsaigh burst into life and hit the front with four quick points at 1-11 to 1-10. At this point, the spectators were enthralled about how the match would end up. With fifteen minutes to go, there was deadlock at 1-12 apiece. Na Piarsaigh finished very strongly and stunned Patrickswell with a second goal to grab 2-13 to 1-13 lead. Any hopes of a comeback were stifled by a salvo of three points from the Light Blues as they established a six-point lead with five minutes to play. By the final whistle, the score stood at 3-18 to 1-15.

The City Championship final against Monaleen is scheduled for Saturday May 20 at 7pm in Claughaun.

11th May 2017

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell clawed out a late victory over Adare in the first match of the County Championship. The opening exchanges were relatively balanced as points from Aaron Gillane (0-2) and Seanie O’Brien kept the ‘Well in touch at 0-4 to 0-3 behind after fifteen minutes.

Adare were able to maintain a slim lead throughout the first half, despite the best efforts of Barry Foley and Aaron Gillane, who notched a further two points apiece before the interval. The scoreboard displayed a narrow one-point advantage for Adare by 0-8 to 0-7 at half-time.

Our opponents started the second half very brightly and fired over two points to build a 0-10 to 0-7 advantage after 40 minutes. Patrickswell needed an immediate response and this was delivered with quickfire points from Aaron Gillane and Andrew Carroll. However, Adare managed to keep their noses in front at every turn. While Kevin O’Brien and Andrew Carroll scored points, Adare extended their lead to 0-13 against 0-11 with ten minutes left. The match was now a war of attrition and Patrickswell had the answer. Young John Flynn and Andrew Carroll plundered consecutive points to draw level at 0-13 apiece. Again, Adare appeared to slam the door shut with a fresh point. It seemed that the ‘Well were not going to hit the front.

Thankfully, the forwards began to take charge and force Adare onto the back foot. Andrew Carroll equalised with five minutes remaining, before Aaron Gillane finally gave Patrickswell the lead at 0-15 to 0-14. The insurance point was scored by Andrew Carroll before the Patrickswell defence snuffed out Adare’s late attacks. There was great relief at the final whistle as Patrickswell won by 0-16 to 0-14. OPEN DAY: The Club ran a very successful Open Day for 5 to 10 year old boys and girls in superb weather. It was a great day and we’re grateful to the members of the Senior Hurling Team and Junior Camogie Team who turned up to help out. It was extremely helpful to have Get Downes in attendance to show our new U-6s a skill or two. Thanks to Marie and Ann for providing the teas and coffees through out the day.

UNDER 12 HURLERS: The U-12 hurlers played two matches in the past week and defeated both St.Patrick’s and Ahane. Well done to the boys and everyone involved.

16th March 2017

UNDER 14 HURLING: Patrickswell travelled to Martinstown for their Féile match against Cois Laoi Gaels. The game was played in very breezy conditions, which made the match a traditional ‘game of two halves”. Patrickswell played into the stiff breeze, but managed to strike the first point. Cois Laoi Gaels began to take advantage of the elements and raced into a 1-2 to 0-1 lead. However the ‘Well responded with three consecutive points and closed the gap to 1-2 to 0-4. Unfortunately the ‘Well were hemmed in for the remainder of the first half as their opponents built a 3-7 to 0-5 interval gap.

The second half saw a spirited revival by Patrickswell as they played with the wind at their backs. There were two goals and two points to slash the deficit to 3-8 to 2-7 with five minutes left. Cois Laoi managed to weather the storm and held on to win by 3-9 to 2-7. Hard luck to the players and management.

CAMOGIE: Our newly formed Committee, under the leadership of the enthusiastic Louise O’Donnell, is looking forward to continued development of camogie within the area. We are very fortunate to have Aedin Foley take on the task of Secretary from Dave Hennessy, who did a tremendous job last year.

Membership forms and fees are up for renewal and will be available at the clubhouse during “Membership Clinics”.

Our Chairperson is Louise O’Donnell, Secretary Aedin Foley, Treasurer Gloria O’Donnell, Registrar Catherine Fitzgerald, PRO Marie Carroll and Child Welfare Officer Maureen O’Grady.

9th March 2017

UNDER 21 HURLING: The U-21 hurlers suffered late disappointment against Ahane in the Premier Championship. The game’s first score was a point from Cian Lynch. Ahane replied with two points, before Patrickswell took charge again with a fine goal from Aaron Gillane. Two fresh points from Gillane put the ‘Well in control at 1-3 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes. Ahane were resilient and drew level with three consecutive points. The remainder of the first half was keenly contested; however our opponents reached the interval at 0-9 to 1-5 ahead.

Patrickswell made a flying start to the second half and went 1-9 to 0-9 ahead with a flurry of four points. There was an exchange of points, before Ahane increased their tempo and plundered three unanswered points. With ten minutes left in the match, the scoreline was deadlocked at 1-10 to 0-13. The game appeared to swing decisively in Patrickswell’s favour when Aaron Gillane struck two late points to create a 1-12 to 0-13 margin. There was late drama as Ahane broke through the Patrickswell defence to notch a devastating goal. Unfortunately, Ahane secured an insurance point and held out for a 1-14 to 1-12 win. Pa Dundon’s men have to wait for the outcome of Adare versus Ahane to determine their progress.

CAMOGIE: Sunday’s Junior Camogie League fixture with Monaleen was postponed as a mark of respect to the O’Neill family.

The Camogie Club will have a Church Gate collection on the weekend of March 11 and 12. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Underage training will be returning shortly and times for the various age groups will be posted shortly.

2nd March 2017

UNDER 21 HURLING: The Under 21 hurlers produced a remarkable comeback to win their opening fixture of the County Premier Championship against Adare. Patrickswell were playing into a stiff breeze in the first half and were largely on the back foot. Despite taking a 0-2 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes, the ‘Well failed to score for the remainder of the half, while Adare plundered seven points without reply. At the interval, the scoreline was 0-8 to 0-2 in arrears.

At the start of the second half, the teams exchanged two points apiece to register a score of 0-10 to 0-4. The wind and rain had abated and this should have favoured Adare’s cause. However, Patrickswell took charge of the match and started to erode the deficit. Two consecutive points reduced the margin to 0-10 to 0-6. The pivotal moment was a 65’ from Aaron Gillane that wrongfooted the Adare goalkeeper and sneaked into the net. The momentum had now swung to Patrickswell as they closed the gap to the bare minimum at 0-10 to 1-6. The ‘Well were full of confidence and shattered their opponents with another salvo of three unanswered points. At the final whistle, Pa Dundon’s men had turned a likely defeat into a 1-9 to 0-10 triumph.

VICTORY DANCE: The club held its much-anticipated Victory Dance at the Woodlands Hotel on Saturday February 4. The large attendance was a tribute to the popularity and importance of Patrickswell GAA in its community. The event recognised the groundbreaking achievements of the 1965&1966 County Champions, the record-equalling 2016 County Champions and the superb Minor Camogie title winners of 2015.

The evening was expertly compered by Club President PJ O’Grady and we were honoured to welcome Patrick O’Donovan as Minister for Sport, Deputy Niall Collins TD and Oliver Mann as County Board Chairman.

It was a very nostalgic and emotional evening as the Men of 1965/1966 were awarded medals to acknowledge their legacy. Sadly, many of the players have now passed away. However, their family members were invited to receive medals and stand in their place. The 2016 Senior Hurling Team and 2015 Minor Camogie Team were thrilled to get recognition for their important victories and their new place in club history.

We also awarded Distinguished Service plaques to Patrick Kirby, Phil Bennis, Bernard Hayes and Mossie Carmody to commemorate their tireless years of service to the club. A special gratitude award was given to Duggan Systems Limited, our longstanding and generous sponsor. In conclusion, John McDermott was awarded Club Person of the Year 2016 in recognition of his trojan work with the Finance Committee and organising the acquisition of land for expansion.

Patrickswell GAA Club would like to thank all its members and supporters for backing this gala evening. It was a superb event and testament to the spirit of our village.
