Club Annual General Meeting: The Club AGM took place at the clubhouse with a healthy turnout by members. The Secretary’s Report was delivered by Martin Ryan at the commencement of the meeting. Martin summarised the minutes of the 2013 AGM before delivering a thorough review of the various teams’ campaigns in 2014.
The Secretary thanked the managers, selectors, players and everyone who assisted him in the course of the year. He asked managers to play fixtures as scheduled, where humanly possible. Martin reminded the attendees that referees must always be respected and poor behaviour is not tolerated. The Secretary congratulated players that had represented Limerick and thanked Duggan Systems, the fundraisers, the Camogie Club, the Juvenile Club, Ciaran Crowe at Patrickswell National School and former treasurer Nelius Hayes.
The Treasurer, Seamus O’Riordan, delivered his Treasurer’s Report. The club’s financial position continues to strengthen, but revenue generation & cost control remain important. There were a number of questions from members before Seamus thanked Duggan Systems, the Lotto Team and the Finance Committee.
The keynote speech was the Chairman’s Address by Kieran Carroll. He identified four pillars for the coming year. Firstly, the club finances must continue to be controlled. In this regard, the Finance Committee has worked superbly in 2014. Secondly, the club must set targets on the playing fields to restore the Glory Days. Thirdly, facilities must be improved and we should continue to work with the Community Council in this regard. Finally, there must be respect in every quarter of the club and a Code of Conduct adhered to. If there is respect, there will be enjoyment.
Kieran thanked a large number of people for their support throughout the year : Duggan Systems as sponsor, Secretary Martin Ryan, the Committee, former Treasurer Nelius Hayes, the Lotto Team, the Field Committee (especially for saving the nets and goalposts during Storm Darwin), PJ O’Grady for supervising medical visits, Gary Kirby & Kieran Darcy for organising our successful Golf Classic, Maurice Fitzgerald, all the managers, selectors and backroom staff, Mary Gillane, Mícheal O’Brien for sponsoring the Memorial Hurling Tournament, Bruff GAA Club, Mike Enright as caretaker, Oliver Mann & the County Board and all club members.
There were a number of speakers from the floor. Raymond Fitzgerald (Juvenile Club Chairman) noted that the Juvenile Club was competing at “A” grade in every level. He wanted the concept of respect to be instilled deeply in the club. The boys and girls had a great time at the various blitzes and Feiles held throughout the year.
Breda Leahy (Camogie Club Chairwoman) was thankful to the senior club for their support, especially during Feile time. Breda paid tribute to the work of Raymond Fitzgerald. Monsignor Lane congratulated the club for the vibrant influence it brings to the community. He was delighted by the large numbers of people involved with the club. He viewed the club as a beacon for young people to develop themselves and learn the importance of discipline. In addition, the club brought much enjoyment to the senior citizens of the parish.
Oliver Mann (Chairman of County Board) complimented the achievements of the club, both on and off the pitch. While silverware is rewarding, Oliver noted that performing to the best of one’s ability is equally important. He welcomed the improvement in the financial position of the club and acknowledged the positive effect of Culture & Scor. The strong relationship between club and Patrickswell National School has allowed for the natural progression to club and county sides.
Gerry Bennis praised the professional operation of the club and congratulated school principals Ciaran Crowe and Joe Lyons for the continued publication of the excellent “Green & White”. Gerry prayed that the Daly Cup could be returned to Patrickswell. Fr. Mike Cussen lauded Patrickswell GAA Club as being great for the community and for the youth.

30th October 2014
Junior A footballers: The Junior A footballers were beaten in the County semi-final by Glin. It was a low-scoring first half as both defences dominated. Lar Considine contributed two points as Patrickswell reached the interval at 0-4 to 0-2 behind.
Glin produced a devastating spell of 2-4 at the start of the second half to build an unassailable 2-8 to 0-2 advantage. To their credit, the ‘Well contributed the last four points of the match (Lar Considine 0-2, Barry Foley and Kevin O’Brien) and narrowed the gap to 2-8 to 0-6. Hard luck to the players and management. It has been another fantastic season of football.
Camogie: The U-13 girls were defeated in their opening round of the City League. Their next fixture is away to Monaleen on Sunday November 2 at noon.
23rd October 2014
Senior Hurlers: The senior hurlers ended their season on a high note by retaining the County Cup against Effin. The game was evenly balanced after five minutes at 0-2 apiece (Diarmaid Byrnes and Tom O’Brien). Patrickswell’s forwards increased their tempo and were rewarded with two devastating goals in three minutes from Tom O’Brien and Aaron Gillane. The scoreboard displayed a healthy 2-2 to 0-2 advantage after ten minutes and ultimately decided the match.
Effin responded with three points without reply to reduce the deficit to one goal. Tom O’Brien (0-2) and Lar Considine restored the six-point lead with some fine scoring. The remainder of the first half saw Effin chip away at the deficit, but the ‘Well reached the interval with a 2-7 to 0-9 lead.
At the start of the second half, the teams exchanged four points each from Cian Lynch (0-2), Diarmaid Byrnes and Tom O’Brien. There were twenty minutes remaining with Patrickswell holding off Effin at 2-11 to 0-13. The outcome looked almost certain when points from Mark Carmody, Tom O’Brien and Lar Considine increased the margin to seven points. Effin were not in the mood to lie down and trimmed the arrears back to four points with three unanswered scores. Patrickswell were 2-14 to 0-16 ahead with ten minutes on the clock and Effin were still in the hunt.
However, the match was over as a contest when Tom O’Brien notched Patrickswell’s third goal and Jack Kelleher, Pat Howard and Lar Considine contributed points. The ‘Well supporters were relaxed with the nine-point margin at 3-17 to 0-17. The game closed with 1-1 from Effin and late points from Jack Kelleher, Tom O’Brien and Lar Considine. Brian Murray accepted the County Cup from County Board Chairman Oliver Mann. The final score was 3-20 to 1-18. Well done to the players and management.
Junior A footballers: The Junior A footballers beat Galtee Gaels in a competitive County quarter-final encounter. Galtee Gaels scored the opening point, but Patrickswell responded with five unanswered scores from Lar Considine (0-3), Kevin O’Brien and Barry Foley. Galtee Gaels closed the first half with two points, but Patrickswell were 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at the interval.
Galtee Gaels dominated the start of the second half. They scored one goal and one point to establish a slender 1-4 to 0-5 advantage. Thankfully Patrickswell had sufficient skill and energy in reserve to respond with three points from Lar Considine (0-2) and Tom O’Brien. With fifteen minutes left, Patrickswell were ahead by the narrowest of margins at 0-8 to 1-4 before the Gaels equalised with another point. Significantly, Lar Considine struck three superb points to create some breathing space at 0-11 to 1-5. Galtee Gaels settled for a point from a late free-kick, instead of aiming for goal. There was a nervy ending as Patrickswell fended off dangerous Galtee Gaels attacks. Their defending was resolute and the ‘Well triumphed by 0-11 to 1-6.
The County semi-final against Glin takes place of Tuesday October 21 at 8pm in Mick Neville Park.
Camogie: Hard luck to the Junior Camogie Ladies, who fought bravely against Knockaderry in the Junior County semi-final. The Minor Championship and U-13 City League are both commencing in the upcoming weeks. Best of luck to everyone involved.
16th October 2014
Senior hurlers: Our Senior hurlers will contest the County Cup Final against Effin on Sunday October 19 at 1.45pm at the Gaelic Grounds. Best wishes to the players and management. It’s a great chance of silverware and to retain the trophy.
Junior A hurlers: The Junior A hurlers were eliminated from the County Championship after a 2-11 to 1-11 semi-final defeat to Feohanagh. There were just twenty seconds on the clock when the ‘Well were caught cold by a Feohanagh goal. When Patrickswell settled into the match, they dominated possession and scored two points in reply. However, Feohanagh plundered another breakaway goal to lead by 2-1 to 0-2 after ten minutes. Patrickswell stuck to their task and notched three unanswered points to trim the deficit at 2-1 to 0-5. There was an immediate response from Feohanagh as they scored three points without reply. After twenty minutes, the West Men had built a comfortable 2-4 to 0-5 advantage. Thankfully, Patrickswell finished the first half strongly and slashed the deficit to three points (2-5 to 0-8) by the interval.
The early stages of the second half were largely dominated by Feohanagh. Patrickswell scored the opening point, but were driven backwards by four consecutive points. There were fifteen minutes remaining and the ‘Well were behind by two goals at 2-9 to 0-9. The teams exchanged two points apiece as Patrickswell attempted to bridge the gap without success. In the closing minutes, the ’Well snatched a goal to set up the grandstand finale at 2-11 to 1-11. Entering injury time, we placed the Feohanagh goal under siege and caused a few goalmouth scrambles. Unfortunately, our opponents’ defence held firm and the referee ended the contest. Hard luck to the players and management. It was a great season with positive hurling throughout.
Junior A footballers: Patrickswell travel to Knocklong for the County quarter-final against Galtee Gaels on Tuesday October 14 at 8pm.
U-14 hurlers: The U-14 hurlers were defeated by Na Piarsaigh in the final of the County Championship by 2-10 to 0-10. Hard luck boys!
Camogie: The U-16 girls lost out to Kilmallock by one point in the County Final. It was a very competitive game, with some excellent skill shown by both sides. While Patrickswell led by two points at half-time, Kilmallock emerged as narrow winners by 1-3 to 1-2. Well done to Ailish Byrnes for making the County Minor Panel for 2015. In addition, Shannon Gillane, Leah Van Veen and Emma Barry were named in the County Minor Development panel for 2015.
The Junior ladies qualified for the County semi-final on Saturday October 18. At the time of writing, the opponents, venue and time are not confirmed.
9th October 2014
Senior hurlers: Our Senior hurlers reached the County Cup Final after an epic victory against Ballybrown in the semi-final. Patrickswell made the perfect start when Tom O’Brien and Kevin O’Brien scored goals within ten minutes to establish a 2-1 to 0-2 lead. There were further points in the first half from Tom O’Brien (0-3) and Cian Lynch (0-1); however Ballybrown reduced the half-time deficit to three points (2-5 to 0-8).
Patrickswell also made an impressive start to the second half when Lar Considine struck a goal and Pat Howard & Jack Kelleher contributed single points. After forty minutes, the ‘Well were comfortably ahead by 3-7 to 0-10. Ballybrown staged a remarkable comeback and plundered 2-5 in a devastating ten-minute burst. The scoreboard displayed a 2-15 to 3-8 deficit with ten minutes remaining. Patrickswell raised their tempo for a final onslaught and drew level in injury time after points from Tom O’Brien (0-3), Kevin O’Brien (0-1) and Lar Considine (0-1).
While the scoreboard incorrectly displayed Lar Considine’s point as the “winner”, it was definitely extra time at 3-13 to 2-16. Patrickswell had the momentum behind them and cruised to victory in extra time by nine points to one point. The final score after eighty minutes of classic hurling was 3-22 to 2-17. Effin await in the County Cup Final on Sunday October 19.

2nd October 2014
Junior A hurlers: The Junior A hurlers lost the City Championship Final to Na Piarsaigh, but remain in the County Championship at the quarter-final stage.
Na Piarsaigh scored three points within five minutes before Andrew Carroll struck a goal to equalise. However, the Caherdavin side increased their tempo and secured five more points without reply. After fifteen minutes, Patrickswell trailed by 0-8 to 1-0. David Woulfe and Andrew Carroll claimed two points apiece as the ‘Well narrowed the score at 0-9 to 1-4. Unfortunately Na Piarsaigh were stronger at the end of the first half and led by 0-12 to 1-5 at the interval.
Patrickswell started the second half with renewed hope when Andrew Carroll delivered three points within ten minutes. The deficit was reduced to 0-13 to 1-8 and the momentum was definitely with the Blue and Gold. Na Piarsaigh showed composure to score another three points and kept the ‘Well at arm’s length. The gap was 0-17 to 1-10 as the match entered the closing ten minutes.
Patrickswell surged forward and were rewarded with two points to Na Piarsaigh’s one point in response. The scoreboard displayed arrears of three points (0-18 to 1-12) when Patrickswell were awarded a free on the cusp of 60 minutes. The distance was about twenty-five yards and Na Piarsaigh’s defenders filled the goalmouth. The outcome was another Patrickswell point, rather than the vital goal. Our fans crossed their fingers for sufficient injury time, but the match concluded thirty seconds later at 0-18 to 1-13. Hard luck to the players and management.

Junior A footballers: The Junior A footballers recorded a superb victory over Na Piarsaigh in the City Final at Clarina. After just three minutes, Barry Foley converted a cool penalty to make the perfect start. The remainder of the first half was keenly contested as both sides struck four points (Lar Considine 0-4). The half-time score was 1-4 to 0-4 in Patrickswell’s favour.
The ‘Well were dominant at the beginning of the second half and added points from Seanie O’Brien (0-2), Lar Considine, David Woulfe and Diarmuid Byrnes. With fifteen minutes remaining, Patrickswell were 1-9 to 0-5 ahead and appeared comfortable. However, Na Piarsaigh dragged their way back into the match with a goal and two points. The advantage was just two points at 1-9 to 1-7.
Patrickswell remained focussed on their task and Lar Considine’s goal created breathing space. Na Piarsiagh accrued three additional points to move within a goal in injury time (2-10 to 1-10). With seconds remaining, the Caherdavin men were awarded a free-kick at close range. Patrickswell filled the goalmouth and their solid defensive barrier eventually cleared the final threat. Lar Considine accepted the City trophy on behalf of the club. The next stage is a County quarter-final. Well done to the teams and management.

Senior hurlers: Patrickswell were eliminated from the County Championship after a six point defeat to Adare. Our opponents started brightly and scored three unanswered points within five minutes. However, the ‘Well responded with two points to close the gap. Adare found an extra gear and claimed four more points to establish a strong 0-7 to 0-2 lead after fifteen minutes.
Patrickswell refused to panic and dominated the remainder of the first half. Diarmuid Byrnes’ ambitious 70 yard free surprised the Adare defence and sailed directly into the net. Three additional points put the ‘Well ahead by 1-6 to 0-8. Adare were under pressure now, but they managed to reach the interval on level terms at 1-7 to 0-10.
The second half began evenly as the teams exchanged four points each. The outcome of the match was in the balance at 1-11 to 0-14. It was anybody’s game. Unfortunately, Adare increased their tempo and produced a devastating goal and three points without reply. With fifteen minutes remaining at the Gaelic Grounds, Adare held a commanding six-point lead of 1-17 to 1-11.
Patrickswell refused to surrender. Our second goal from Tom O’Brien slashed the deficit to just three points (2-11 to 1-17) and suggested a grandstand finale. It was a short-lived recovery as Adare plundered a decisive goal within one minute of the restart. This goal was augmented by another three points to establish an unassailable 2-20 to 2-11 lead. Kevin O’Brien’s late goal was effectively the last act of the match. The final score was 3-11 to 2-20. Hard luck to the players and management.

The half-time score was a healthy lead of 1-14 to 0-6 for the home team.

15th May 2014
Senior hurlers: The senior hurlers recorded a crucial victory over Knockainey in the second round of the County Championship. The match was played in atrocious cold, wet and windy conditions in Claughaun where attractive hurling was extremely difficult.
Knockainey took advantage of the swirling wind to notch three unanswered points within ten minutes. Eventually Patrickswell settled and drew level with scores from Sean O’Brien, Mark Carmody and Jack Kelleher. Knockainey scored another two points before Mark Carmody closed the first half with a point. At the interval, the ‘Well trailed by 0-5 to 0-4.
The beginning of the second half was delicately balanced. Lar Considine and Brian Murray matched Knockainey points to keep the score at 0-7 to 0-6. The game appeared to turn in Knockainey’s favour when they snatched a goal to establish a 1-7 to 0-6 advantage. However, it was Knockainey’s last score of the match as Patrickswell mounted a comprehensive recovery. Jack Kelleher and Brian Murray fired over to reduced the deficit to 1-7 to 0-8. With fifteen minutes on the clock, a high ball was dropped by the Knockainey goalkeeper and Jack Kelleher clinically took his goal chance.
It was Patrickswell’s first time ahead (1-8 to 1-7) and they made no mistake. Brian Murray sailed two long-range frees over the bar, while Tom O’Brien, Mark Carmody and Aaron Gillane put the gloss on a 1-13 to 1-7 win. The result put the ‘Well back in the Championship hunt and sent their soaked followers home happy. The result also served as a County League victory.
On Friday May 16 at 7pm, Patrickswell face Na Piarsaigh in the semi-final of the City Senior Hurling Championship at Clarina.

U-14 hurlers: The U-14 hurlers were denied the County Feile title after a late Garryspillane goal clinched the final in Fedamore. In the first half, Garryspillane played with the stiff breeze and forced Patrickswell onto the back foot. Our opponents established a 1-3 to 0-0 advantage before Adam Carrig registered the ‘Well’s first point just before the interval.
The second half was dominated by Patrickswell as Garryspillane struggled to escape from their own half. Calvin Carroll was in excellent form as he notched five unanswered points, while Clive Kirby added to the Patrickswell tally. With five minutes on the clock, the boys led by 0-7 to 1-3. Garryspillane scored a point to draw level; however Jason Gillane immediately restored the lead with a fine point. The match was delicately poised when Garryspillane launched a late foray that yielded the crucial goal. There was insufficient time for Patrickswell to respond and the East club won by 2-4 to 0-8. Hard luck to the players and management team.
U-15 hurlers: The U-15 hurlers lost by 0-11 to 0-5 against Mungret. Their next engagements are Templeglantine away on Monday May 12 and Bruff away on Wednesday May 14.

After fifteen minutes, Diarmuid Byrnes and Jack Kelleher scored fresh points to tie the match at 0-4 each.
Na Piarsaigh experienced a spell of dominance to lead by 0-7 to 0-4 after twenty minutes, but Patrickswell controlled the reminder of the first half to take charge by 0-10 to 0-8 at half-time (Jack Kelleher another 0-4, Aaron Gillane and Andrew Carroll 0-1 each).
Confidence was high at the beginning of the second half; however Na Piarsaigh produced a blistering flurry of 1-5 without reply in ten minutes. Patrickswell were 1-13 to 0-10 in arrears when Jack Kelleher reduced the margin to 1-13 to 0-12. Unfortunately, Na Piarsaigh increased their tempo and rattled eight unanswered points to lead by 1-21 to 0-12. Juvenile Club AGM: The Juvenile Club Annual General Meeting took place with a good attendance present. Secretary Pa Dundon delivered his Secretary’s Address and reminded managers about the protocol for arranging & changing fixtures.
Chairman Raymond Fitzgerald’s Address was a detailed review of the 2013 season. The U-6s and U-8s trained with the camogie girls and participated in various matches throughout the year. These age groups are where hurling skills are first established and the Chairman was very thankful for the coaching of Dessie Foley, Ger McGrath, Aedin Foley, Gloria O’Donnell and Niamh Geoghegan.
The U-10s played in numerous local blitzes and a county blitz held at the University of Limerick. The Parish League was a major highlight of the season for the players. We are grateful to O’Brien’s Pharmacy for their continued sponsorship. Thanks to Pat Lynch, Dominic Harmon and John Gorman for coaching the U-10s.
The U-12 hurlers entered two teams in the League, which permitted plenty of opportunity for the players. The U-12s also entered a tournament in Tralee, a blitz in Rathkeale and a Munster Council blitz at Semple Stadium. Many thanks to Gary Kirby, John Gorman, Declan Gillane, Richie Bennis and Barry Foley for their coaching. The U-13s played a tournament at Na Piarsaigh of Cork and reached the semi-final of the League before losing out to Na Piarsaigh by two points.
The U-14s made a strong defence of their Feile crown by beating Ahane and Monaleen, before succumbing to a strong Na Piarsaigh team. In National Feile, the boys were placed in a difficult group against O’Loughlin Gaels, Holycross Ballycahill and Mungret. Unfortunately, Patrickswell were unable to record a victory. In the Championship, the U-14s battled through to a semi-final defeat against Kilmallock. The management team was Damien Gillane, Conor Murray, Brian Murray, Ger Considine, John O’Donnell and Barry Foley for the great effort invested into the team.
The U-15s participated in the Andy Creagh Tournament in Blackrock (Cork) and beat Sixmilebridge, Blackrock, Cappoquin and Kilmallock. Unfortunately, the boys lost out to Clarinbridge in the final. In the County League Final, the ‘Well overcame Kilmallock by 2-7 to 0-8. Congratulations to the players and management of Paddy Flynn, Richie Maher, Frank Dillon, Mike Quinn and Willie Leahy. The U-16s reached a County semi-final; however they were beaten by the hot favourites Na Piarsiagh. Each side from U-13 to U-16 reached at least a County semi-final, which is most encouraging.
Feile na nGael was the undoubted highlight of the year. The Feile Committee of Breda Leahy, Mary Gillane, Breda Earls, Paul Foley, Nelius Hayes, Maurice Fitzgerald and Jim O’Herlihy worked extremely hard to raise funds and organise the prestigious event immaculately. The club wishes to thank everyone who gave their time to make National Feile a resounding success, including the host parents.
The hurling wall completion was a major achievement for the club. Great credit is due to the Club Executive, Michael Joyce and Richie Bennis for delivering the project. The facility is utilised by every grade, from U-6 to senior hurlers.
The Chairman congratulated the National School for its emphatic successes in 2013 – Olo Cup, Mayor’s Cup, Leader Cup and the U-11 competition. Principal Ciaran Crowe and teachers Paul O’Connor, Dave Bulfin and Club Liaison Coach Gary Kirby deserve our appreciation.
Shane Joyce was thanked for establishing the Facebook page in conjunction with Maurice Fitzgerald and James McCarthy. Niamh Geoghegan and Michael Joyce provided First Aid and Mary Higgins worked tirelessly for the Juvenile Club throughout the year. Breda Leahy, the camogie club, Ger Downes and Maurice Fitzgerald were also called out for their support to the club. Mentors and parents were complimented for their willingness to transport players to matches and perform the laundry.
Raymond also thanked the coaches of the adult and camogie clubs for their understanding while scheduling the pitch bookings. He paid tribute for the help and support received from Martin Ryan, Nelius Hayes, Paul Foley and Michael Joyce. In addition, Raymond said that he looked forward to working with new Club Chairman Kieran Carroll.
In closing, Raymond expressed his gratitude to the coaching staff. While hurling was the primary focus of training sessions, the impact that coaches have on the self-esteem and confidence of young players should never be underestimated. While winning is nice, it’s also important to enjoy the game at a minimum.
After speeches by Kieran Carroll and Breda Leahy, the election of officers and coaches was conducted. The officers were ratified again as follows: Raymond Fitzgerald (Chairman), Pa Dundon (Secretary) and James McCarthy (PRO). The coaching staff were agreed as below.
