10th October 2013
Senior Hurlers: The Senior hurlers clinched the County Cup trophy after an exciting tussle with Granagh-Ballingarry at the Gaelic Grounds. Patrickswell made a lively start and registered two points from Seanie O’Brien and Jack Kelleher before Granagh-Ballingarry registered their first point. The remainder of the first half was thoroughly dominated by the ‘Well. Lar Considine struck a point before Jack Kelleher added two more scores to establish a 0-5 to 0-1 margin after fifteen minutes. The ‘Well struck a decisive blow when Kevin O’Brien stormed through the opposition defence and notched a fine goal. Jack Kelleher scored a further point to put 1-6 to 0-1 on the scoreboard. Granagh-Ballingarry managed to stem the tide with two unanswered points; however Patrickswell closed the first half with two additional points. The interval score was a healthy 1-8 to 0-3 lead.
The second half saw a resurgence by Granagh-Ballingarry. As the rain fell, they adapted quickly to the slippery conditions. While Barry Foley notched the opening point of the second half, our opponents were in the ascendancy and rewarded by a goal and two points. The deficit was four points when Brian Murray made a fine save to thwart Granagh-Ballingarry. Lar Considine settled the nerves with two points to cancel our opponents’ points. The clock showed ten minutes remaining with Patrickswell holding a narrow 1-11 to 1-8 lead. Jack Kelleher’s point gave the ‘Well some breathing space before Granagh-Ballingarry responded in kind. The South Men went looking for an equalising goal, but Brian Murray was in sparkling form between the posts. The game was put beyond doubt when Lar Considine exploited gaps in Granagh-Ballingarry’s defence to calmly take his goal during injury time. The final result was a 2-12 to 1-9 triumph for the ‘Well. James Mann accepted the County Cup and Brian Murray was deservedly awarded Man of the Match. Congratulations to the players and management for claiming the title.

Senior Hurlers: The Senior hurlers contest the County Cup Final against Granagh-Ballingarry on Sunday October 6 at 1.45pm in the Gaelic Grounds. Please come along to support the players and management in their quest for silverware.
Junior A footballers: The Junior A footballers claimed the City Championship title after a scintillating first half performance against Na Piarsaigh. Brian O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a point, however Na Piarsaigh equalised immediately. Patrickswell launched a rapid offensive and punished the Caherdavin men with a devastating fifteen minute spell. Jack Kelleher struck a point before Brian O’Sullivan rattled the net to put the ‘Well 1-2 to 0-1 ahead. Barry Foley contributed two points to supplement points from Lar Considine and Kevin O’Brien. The scoreboard displayed 1-6 to 0-1 when Kevin O’Brien notched a decisive second goal and Tom O’Brien fired over. Patrickswell eased off the throttle and Na Piarsaigh salvaged three points to trail by 2-7 to 0-4 at the interval.
Na Piarsaigh started the second half confidently and Patrickswell were under pressure. Our opponents scored two points to narrow the deficit, although Lar Considine claimed a point to establish an eight point margin at 2-8 to 0-6. Four unanswered points from Na Piarsaigh caused a few nerves, but Lar Considine’s late point cemented the victory by 2-9 to 0-10. Well done to the players and management for this great success.
Junior A hurlers: The Junior A hurlers suffered disappointment when Na Piarsaigh beat them in the latter stages of the City Championship final. Patrickswell were first on the scoreboard when Wesley Morrissey notched a point. Na Piarsaigh were quick to reply with two points, however Aaron Gillane stepped up with a goal and point within a minute. The Caherdavin side added two points before Declan O’Grady claimed his own point. Na Piarsaigh reached level terms at 1-3 to 0-6 with two fresh points. Jeffrey Foley and Eoin MacNamara helped out with additional points before Wesley Morrissey struck a second goal. Patrickswell held a 2-5 to 0-8 advantage at half-time.
Na Piarsaigh began the second half on the attack and were rewarded with two points. Aaron Gillane and Eoin MacNamara kept the ‘Well ahead by 2-7 to 0-11 when they shot over the crossbar. Unfortunately Na Piarsaigh delivered a hammer blow with ten minutes remaining. Their forward rounded Patrickswell goalkeeper Gary Murphy and kicked the sliotar home. Their goal was followed by four unanswered points to build a 1-15 to 2-7 lead over the ‘Well. Dean Cawley’s goal on the stroke of full-time generated some hope; however Na Piarsaigh survived by 1-15 to 3-7. Hard luck to the players and management. The consolation is a County quarter-final berth.
U-15 hurlers: The U-15 hurlers won the Division One County Final with a 2-7 to 0-8 win over Kilmallock in Mungret. A bright start and an early Jason Gillane goal helped Patrickswell into 1-3 to 0-00 lead midway through the first half. However, Kilmallock closed the gap and the ‘Well were ahead by one point at the break. At the start of the second half, a couple of Kilmallock points meant the boys found themselves a point down. Thankfully, the players raised their game in the final quarter and were rewarded by a late Jamie Dillon penalty goal. The final result was 2-7 to 0-8.
The team was Stephen Dunworth, Conor Fitzgerald, Brian Nolan, Eoin Carroll, Padraig Maher, Jordan Higgins, Bryan Fitzgerald, Danny Harty, John Flynn, Barry Kiely, Cathal Quinlan (capt), Josh Considine, Jason Gillane, Jamie Dillon and Darragh Aherne. The substitute used was Calvin Carroll. Congratulations to the whole panel and the management team of Paddy Flynn, Mike Quinn, Frank Dillon, Richie Maher and Willie Leahy.
U-13 hurlers: The U-13 hurlers lost by three points to Na Piarsaigh which ended our interest in this year’s competition. A failure to convert numerous chances cost Patrickswell, despite a great performance on the night.

The competition will be run over three Sunday mornings, commencing on Sunday October 13 at 10amd and 11am respectively.
26th September 2013
Junior A hurlers: The Junior A hurlers played out an enthralling draw with Na Piarsaigh in the City Championship Final at the Gaelic Grounds. The Caherdavin men took the lead with two points, before Aaron Gillane (0-2), Daragh Shanahan & Kelvin Lynch put Patrickswell 0-4 to 0-2 ahead. Na Piarsaigh drew level at 0-4 to 0-4; however the ‘Well took full control and dominated the remainder of the first half. Declan O’Grady struck the back of the net and scored a point, while Aaron Gillane contributed another three points. At half-time, Patrickswell held a respectable 1-8 to 0-6 cushion.
Na Piarsaigh started the second half with great purpose and reduced the margin to 1-8 to 0-8 with two points. Their hopes were apparently dashed when Declan O’Grady rattled the net from close range to build a 2-8 to 0-8 advantage. However, the goal spurred Na Piarsaigh and they claimed four unanswered points to bring themselves into contention at 2-8 to 0-12. Aaron Gillane broke their momentum with a point and established a three-point margin. Once again, our opponents applied intense pressure and were rewarded with another four points without reply. With sixty minutes on the clock, Na Piarsaigh led by 0-16 to 2-9 and placed one hand on the trophy. However, Patrickswell were not finished and John Fitzgerald delighted supporters with a last gasp point. The result was a riveting 2-10 to 0-16 draw. The replay is fixed for Sunday September 29 (venue to be decided) at 5 pm.

U-14 hurlers: The U14 hurlers lost the County Championship semi-final last Saturday in Bruff. Three early Kilmallock goals, while playing with a strong breeze, had Patrickswell on the back foot from the start. However, the boys fought back to close within three points at half time on a score of 3-4 to 1-7. The concession of two further goals made a difficult task almost impossible. Despite the odds, our young team battled hard to the end, but lost by 5-10 to 1-9. Well done to all the players and management for the progress they have made throughout the year.
U-13 hurlers: The U-13 hurlers had a 5-10 to 3-4 win over Croagh Kilfinny. Their next fixture is against Na Piarsaigh on Wednesday September 25 at 6.30pm in Patrickswell. The winners of this game qualify for the County Final.

In the final group game, the boys beat Cappaquinn 6-8 to 1-2 and qualified for the semi-final against Kilmallock. A great battling performance saw Patrickswell win the match by four points. Over seven hours after playing our first game, some extremely tired players took to the field for their fifth match of the day against Athenry. Despite our best efforts, we lost out to the very strong Galway outfit by 3-5 to 0-4.

5th September 2013
Senior hurlers: Patrickswell secured their senior hurling status with an emphatic win over Croom in Bruff. The opening exchanges were finely balanced as Croom and Patrickswell scored two points each. However, the ‘Well gradually took control and led by 0-4 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes with further points from Jack Kelleher and Cian Lynch. The match was ultimately decided by an intense three-goal burst in ten minutes, with Kevin O’Brien rattling the net twice to put considerable distance between the two sides. Jack Kelleher and Eoin Foley added more points as Patrickswell built an unassailable 3-6 to 0-3 interval lead.
The second half produced a workmanlike performance that added numerous points to the Patrickswell tally. At one stage, the ‘Well held a 3-14 to 0-4 advantage over their neighbours. Croom battled through the closing ten minutes and scored a goal to reduce the winning margin. The final result was a 3-17 to 1-7 triumph, but the most important outcome was the confirmation of senior hurling status. Congratulations to the players and management for a great performance. Patrickswell’s next match is a County Cup semi-final.

What an incredible, unforgettable day in the Gaelic Grounds last Sunday!
In CLG Tobar Phádraig we are immensely proud of Limericks achievement last week and in particular the role played by our own clubmen in the process, namely Mark Carmody with the Seniors, Cian Lynch with the Minors and County Board Chairman Oliver Mann.
Well done to all – Croke Park here we come!
Earlier in the week our under 14s defeated Ballybrown 3-13 to 1-3 at Páirc Antóin O’Briain in the county hurling championship.
On Saturday 20th July our u13s are travelling to Cork to play in the Na Piarsaigh hurling tournament – good luck to all.
Our senior hurlers also played challenge games during the week against Eire Og Nenagh and against Toomevarra.
Well done to our Junior Camogie team that reached the semi final in Thurles Sarsfield Tournament last Saturday. They topped their group after 3 outstanding performances. Firstly they played Lixnaw with an outstanding performance by Ailish Byrnes winning 3;4 to 2pts.Next up was Roscrea – our defence were very busy in this game, in particular Niamh Geogeghan in goals with Mairead Buston and Carl O Neill in top form throughout, winning 1;4 to 5pts.Almost immediately we lined out against Portlaw from Waterford drawing this game 5pts a piece which put us in the top semi final. Our girls fought hard against Indianapolis USA but the Americans came out on top after a hard fought match. Many thanks to all our supporters, Willie Leahy and John O Donnell for their hard work with the girls on the day and we are looking forward to Championship in August.

Féile na nGael: Patrickswell GAA Club played host to Féile na nGael 2013 and delivered first-class hospitality to its visitors. Unfortunately, the club did not taste success on the pitch. The hurlers’ first match was against their visitors from O’Loughlin Gaels. The Kilkenny boys were extremely strong and were good value for their victory. On Saturday morning, the boys faced the Tipperary champions from Holycross Ballycahill. The first half was a tense affair, with Holycross holding a narrow 0-2 to 0-1 advantage at the break. The second half saw an increased tempo from the Tipperary boys and they ran out 1-6 to 0-3 winners. Patrickswell’s hurlers concluded Féile with a defeat to the home team of Mungret. Hard luck to the boys and the management team.
The camogie girls started with a tough match against visitors Lucan Sarsfields. Despite Patrickswell scoring a goal after twenty seconds, the Dubliners were methodical with their performance and did not concede another point on their way to victory. The girls’ second match was against Wexford’s St. Ibars Shelmalier. The first half was a tight affair, with St. Ibars taking a 1-1 to 0-0 half-time lead. Patrickswell could not eat into the deficit and the Wexford girls won by 2-5 to 0-2. Within 30 minutes, the girls were back in action against Charleville. Sadly, the Cork team were triumphant and the girls bowed out.
The club wishes to thank everyone who made Féile na nGael a remarkable success. The exhaustive list includes the outstanding Féile Committee, the stewards, the umpires, the groundsmen, the gate staff, the carpark attendants, the clubhouse refreshments staff, the bakers & sandwich makers, the host parents and everyone at the Cu Chulainn. Apologies if anyone was missed! Your service to the club was immeasurable. We hope that new friendships were forged between the Patrickswell children and their visitors.

20th June 2013
Senior hurlers: The Senior hurlers produced an energetic second half display to overcome Granagh-Ballingarry in the County Hurling Championship. Both sides were inseparable in the opening exchanges as Barry Foley and Sean O’Brien cancelled out their opponents’ points. The remainder of the first half was “nip-and-tuck” as Jack Kelleher’s four points guaranteed an interval score of 0-6 each.
In the second half, Patrickswell took immediate control and put Granagh-Ballingarry on the back foot. Jack Kelleher (0-2), Tom O’Brien, Pat Howard, Mark Carmody and Lar Considine scored points within five minutes to establish a 0-12 to 0-6 lead. The victory was secured when Kevin O’Brien and Barry Foley hit the net from close range and the scoreboard displayed 2-13 to 0-8. However, the ‘Well did not ease the pressure and registered another three points and a goal from Tom O’Brien. The result was a 3-16 to 0-8 triumph. Senior hurlers: The Senior hurlers suffered a narrow one-point defeat, 3-10 to 0-18, in the opening game of the County Championship against Doon. It took Diarmuid Byrnes a minute to open Patrickswell’s account on a cool and slippery evening in Bruff. Doon responded with three consecutive points, before Mark Carmody recorded the ‘Well’s second point. However, Doon experienced a purple patch in the middle of the first half and surged ahead with a goal and two points.
The scoreboard showed a 1-5 to 0-2 deficit as Patrickswell mounted their fightback. Tom O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien, Diarmuid Byrnes, Seanie O’Brien and Jack Kelleher all notched points to compensate for the loss of Lar Considine through injury. At the interval, the ‘Well trailed by 1-7 to 0-7.

Within two minutes, Na Piarsaigh scored another goal that wickedly spiralled over Paul Buston. The first half closed at 2-3 to 1-1.
The second half was a low-scoring affair as Na Piarsaigh attempted to hold their advantage. Patrickswell tried really hard, but could not crack their opponents’ resolute defence. Daniel Feasey added a point, but the final outcome was a 2-5 to 1-2 reverse. Hard luck to players and management for having such a good campaign and bringing pride to the club.

2nd May 2013
U-21 hurlers: The U-21 hurlers were unlucky to lose the Premier County Under 21 final to Na Piarsaigh, despite a fine performance in Bruff. The ‘Well made a confident start and secured two early points from Jack Kelleher and Mark Carmody. However, Na Piarsaigh edged their way into the match and replied with two points.
Patrickswell enjoyed a purple patch and raced into a 0-7 to 0-4 lead before Na Piarsaigh reacted strongly and replied with five unanswered points. The scoreline was 0-9 to 0-7 when Kevin O’Brien rattled the net with a close-range goal. Na Piarsaigh closed out the first half with a point as the teams settled for 1-7 to 0-10 stalemate.
In the second half, the teams were inseparable until the 45th minute as 1-12 to 0-15 flashed on the scoreboard. Na Piarsaigh increased their tempo and fired over four consecutive points. Jack Kelleher replied with a point for the ‘Well before Na Piarsaigh claimed another. There was only five minutes on the clock and the Caherdavin men held a 0-20 to 1-13 advantage. The deficit was reduced to three points when Jack Kelleher added another point.
Patrickswell pushed for an equaliser and forced Na Piarsaigh to concede a penalty in the final two minutes. Andrew Carroll stepped forward, but his fierce shot soared six inches above the crossbar. Na Piarsaigh managed to hang on for a 0-20 to 1-15 victory. Hard luck to the players and management. You had a great season.

25th April 2013
U-21 hurlers: The U-21 hurlers edged out Ballybrown in a gripping Premier Championship semi-final in Bruff. Patrickswell started impressively as Jack Kelleher and Kevin O’Brien scored points within the opening two minutes. Ballybrown settled down and claimed three points, before Kevin O’Brien levelled the scores at 0-3 apiece after ten minutes. The next five minutes were “nip and tuck” as both teams took their chances to draw level at 0-5 to 0-5.
After twenty minutes, Daragh Shanahan hit the back of the net from close range and gave the ‘Well some breathing space. However, our parish neighbours remained composed and rattled four points to eliminate the deficit at 1-6 to 0-9. Luckily, Diarmuid Byrnes and Mark Carmody struck points before the interval and Patrickswell held a slender 1-8 to 0-10 lead.
The second half saw an instant Ballybrown revival. Their first point of the half was followed by a fortuitous goal that put our opponents 1-11 to 1-8 ahead. Jack Kelleher narrowed the gap with a point, but Ballybrown applied more pressure with three consecutive points. The scoreboard gave cause for concern with the ‘Well 1-14 to 1-9 in arrears. However, there was a great response as Mark Carmody and Jack Kelleher (2) dragged Patrickswell back into contention.
A second goal from Daragh Shanahan provided a major boost to the players, but Ballybrown could not be shaken off when they secured another three unanswered points. As the match entered the closing five minutes, Ballybrown led by 1-18 to 2-12. Andrew Carroll notched an invaluable point to set up a thrilling finale. With two minutes on the clock, Ger Murphy kept his composure to score the decisive goal from a narrow angle. Patrickswell were one point ahead before Jack Kelleher added an insurance point to seal a 3-14 to 1-18 victory. Well done to the players and management team. Their opponents in the final are Na Piarsaigh. At the time of writing, a date and time had not been fixed.

The scoreline was 1-12 to 1-7 and the final will be a repeat of last year’s decider against Na Piarsaigh.

Senior hurlers: The Senior hurlers lost their opening County League Hurling League fixture by 1-13 to 0-13 to a strong Na Piarsaigh side. Despite missing one or two players due to injury, the team put in a very spirited performance with the game in the balance up to the final minute. There were fine performances from Nigel Foley, James Mann, Diarmuid Byrnes, Pat Howard, Lar Considine, Mark Carmody and Seanie O’Brien. Unfortunately, the result also eliminates Patrickswell from the City Hurling Championship at the semi-final stage. The ‘Well are next in action against Murroe Boher on Saturday April 20 away.
Limerick Féile : The U-14 hurlers have made a winning start to their County Féile defence. Ahane were the visitors to a chilly Pairc Antoin O’Briain for the Féile quarter final. The visitors started confidently with the breeze at their backs and notched the first point. Eventually the ‘Well established their rhythm and hit back with a point of their own. The first half was keenly contested, but a Patrickswell goal cemented a half-time advantage of 1-2 to 0-3.
The second half was a clinical display of hurling from the home team as Ahane were held scoreless. The ‘Well benefited from the strong wind and produced a devastating burst of three goals and two points to seal the victory. At the final whistle, the boys emerged with a 4-4 to 0-3 triumph and booked their passage to the Féile semi-final.

Limerick intercounty: There were bittersweet emotions for Limerick Gaels this weekend as Limerick’s hurlers were deprived of promotion to Division 1A. The Shannonsiders lost narrowly by 1-16 to 1-15 against Dublin at Semple Stadium. Hard luck to the county hurlers, including Mark Carmody, and best wishes for the upcoming Munster Championship.

28th March 2013
Senior Hurling
The Winter cobwebs were certainly blown away on a razor cold Sunday morning last where Ballybrown again captured the Michael O Brien Tournament on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-10.
In front of a sizeable attendance and with both teams fielding experimental sides the play was very even in the first half with Ballybrown in front at halftime by 6 points to 5.
Two goals in quick succession midway through the second half gave Ballybrown a cushion to push on and they ran out deserving winners in the finish.
Overall this was an entertaining start to the season with both teams contesting the final very competitively.
Compliments to the field committee (Moss Carmody. Nelius Hayes, Willie Fenton, Michael Joyce, Richard Bennis and Dick Nash) who had the field in great condition.
Also thanks to Colin Fitzpatrick and his officials who did a very accomplished job refereeing the game.
Many thanks again to Micheál O’Brien and family for sponsoring the tournament.
Camogie
Our Junior Camogie team had a great win on Saturday with a three point victory over Cappamore at home. Also our under 14 camogie players enjoyed victory over Treaty Gaels early on Sunday morning in the first round of the under 14 camogie league.
Fundraising
Work continues on the harnessing of much needed club funds with the Sports Prediction sheet doing the rounds. The entry fee for this competition is just 10 euro.
The weekly lotto continues to build up as does the number of contributions to the newly constructed hurling wall. Every little helps!
The clubs nominated greyhound Stone Boy King narrowly missed qualifying for the final of the Con and Annie Kirby Stake at Limerick Greyhound tack last Saturday night by just one place. Again Patrickswell GAA appreciated the sponsorship on behalf of Limericks GAA clubs of this sweepstake by JP McManus and family.
40th Anniversary Presentation
A very enjoyable afternoon took place at the Cu Chulainn last Sunday when on behalf of the club the Senior Hurlers accorded a special presentation to each of the Patrickswell Heroes on that historic occasion. Frankie Nolan, Sean Foley, Richard Bennis and Phil Bennis all addressed the large attendance and spoke very movingly on their pride and commitment to Patrickswell GAA Club.
Scor
The club performed very creditably at the County Senior Scor finals last Friday night at Askeaton. The clubs Set Dancing team qualified for the Munster final as County Champions while Paula Griffin (Solo singing) and Joanne Tierney (Recitation) both performed exceptionally well in their respective genres and were unlucky not to get through. Well done to all again especially Mary Shinnors and Muirne Bennis for their continued hard work as coaches.
21st March 2013
The Under 13 and Under 14 hurlers were delighted to receive their 2012 medals from Tipperary All-Ireland winner Shane McGrath at the clubhouse. Shane fondly remembers his underage hurling experiences and encouraged the Patrickswell youngsters to enjoy their early years. With complete honesty, he ranks his Under 16C club county medal on a par with the All-Ireland hurling medal. Ray Fitzgerald and Paul Foley welcomed Shane to Patrickswell and asked the assembled juvenile club members to take their inspiration from him.
Supporters are invited to make a one-off €50 donation towards the cost of the new hurling wall by the end of April to Treasurer Nelius Hayes. Donor names will be included on a plaque to recognise the event.
Many thanks to everyone who attended the Féile fundraiser in The Dark Horse on St. Patrick’s Day. We are especially grateful to the Dark Horse as hosts, Gerry O’Shea for providing the meat and Sheila Morrissey, Mary Higgins, Bridget Higgins, Denis Mac and Ger Considine for cooking the barbecue.
The Michael O’Brien hurling tournament will take place this weekend. On Saturday 23rd March, the ‘Well face Croom at 1pm and Sixmilebridge tackle Ballybrown at 2.30pm on the same day. The final is scheduled for Sunday 24th March at 12 noon. Many thanks to the O’Brien family for their sponsorship of this competition. After the tournament final is decided, the Senior Hurling Panel will make a special presentation in the Cu Chulainn to the Patrickswell members of Limerick’s 1973 All-Ireland Hurling Championship Team. It’s the 40th anniversary of Richie, Phil, Sean and Frankie’s heroic achievement at Croke Park.
Congratulation to the Limerick hurlers for winning their third consecutive Division 1B game by beating Dublin away. It’s been a very encouraging start to the new season.
The Patrickswell greyhound Stone Boy King came third in the recent dog meeting at the Limerick Track.

Congratulations to Patrickswell’s Jack Kelleher, who was part of the UCC team that was crowned Fresher A Hurling Champions last Wednesday. UCC defeated NUIG by 0-18 to 2-10 in the final at the Gaelic Grounds and completed a four-in a-row.

Hard luck to Niall Carrig and Lar Considine, who were part of the Mary Immaculate panel who battled courageously against UCC in the Fitzgibbon Cup Final. On this occasion, the Cork university proved too strong for their Limerick opponents. Commentators were very impressed that Mary Immaculate reached a national final with a much smaller panel than illustrious rivals.

17th January 2013
The Juvenile Club AGM was held last week and there was a healthy turnout from members. Pa Dundon delivered a brief Secretary’s Report, which outlined some important guidelines to make the juvenile club run efficiently.
Raymond Fitzgerald then delivered his Chairman’s Address. He started with the Under 6 hurlers and their successful interaction with the camogie girls. He commended the hard work that was invested by coaches to get the basics of hurling correct. The players had a fun season and played a few games along with the Parish League. The Under 8 hurlers also joined with the camogie girls for training, while contesting a number of blitzes. Once again, the priority of the excellent training sessions was getting the fundamentals pinned down at an early age.
The Under 10 hurlers were busy with blitzes in June, July, August and September. In situations where Patrickswell had sufficient numbers for two teams, the panel’s ability was evenly split to avoid the scenario of categorising players as weak or strong. One of the highlights of the Aged 6 to 10 groups was the Parish League, kindly supported by O’Brien’s Pharmacy. The Under 12 panel consisted of 26 players, so a decision was made to enter two teams. Once again, the decision was made to avoid fielding a weak team and a strong team, so the panel was split between older and younger players in different divisions. Nine games were played in the season, with an impressive record of eight wins and one draw.
The Under 13s had a terrific season as they were crowned as County Champions. After beating Newcastlewest, Kilmallock, Ballybrown and Deel Rangers, the boys produced an inspired performance to beat fancied Mungret by 4-6 to 3-5 at the Gaelic Grounds.
The star performers of 2012 were undoubtedly the Under 14 hurlers. Within Limerick, the boys played in a trio of County finals against Na Piarsaigh and won two of them – the Féile and County League. The only setback came in the County Championship, where the Caherdavin boys trumped Patrickswell in the dying moments.
The most memorable event of the season was the visit of Patrickswell to National Féile in Dublin. The ‘Well beat their hosts St. Vincent’s and drew with Kilmacud Crokes. The final group match was a ‘winner takes all’ encounter with James Stephens of Kilkenny. The boys turned in a courageous display to beat their opponents by 0-7 to 1-3 and set up a semi-final against St. Brigid’s of Dublin. The weather conditions were appalling and the ‘Well battled heroically before losing out by four points to the eventual competition winners. The whole experience was hugely positive while the parents, supporters and players made a big impression on hosts and opponents alike. Patrickswell returned to Limerick with its reputation as a great hurling club intact. Congratulations to the players and the coaching staff for achieving so much in a single season.
The Under 16 hurlers struggled due to lack of numbers. Almost every player was also involved with the Minors or Under 14s. The boys managed to win six out of eight games and the season ended with a Shield semi-final defeat to South Liberties. On the county front, Patrickswell provided six players to Limerick’s Under 14s, two players to the Under 15s and two players to the Under 6s. Cian Lynch was part of the Under 16 team that won an All-Ireland for the first time. John Flynn also claimed a White Cup winners’ medal with Ard Scoil Ris.
Raymond thanked a long list of groups and people, including the Féile Fundraising Committee, Patrickswell National School’s staff and coaches, the senior club officers and fellow juvenile and camogie club members. He extended his best wishes to Oliver Mann as County Board Chairman and Natal O’Grady, Brendan Cawley & Michael Scanlon as senior hurling management. In closing, Raymond emphasised the importance of top-class coaching to continue success and developing younger teams. 2013 promises to be an exciting year, with 100 players on the books and National Féile coming to Limerick.
Club Chairman Paul Foley complimented Raymond on the success of the juvenile club and mentioned the importance of good coaching & club unity. He hoped that the underage players would benefit from the gym, astroturf and hurling wall to hone their skills and produce success. Camogie Chairwoman Breda Leahy looked forward to working alongside the juvenile club in 2013, while Natal O’Grady believed the work of the juvenile club would reap benefits for the senior hurling team in due course.
Raymond Fitzgerald, Pa Dundon and James McCarthy were returned as the officers, while the following team management was ratified en bloc. Under 16s and Under 15s – P. Flynn, F. Dillon, W. Leahy, M. Quinn and R. Maher. Under 14s – Damien Gillane, C. Murray, J. O’Donnell, G. Considine, B. Murray and B. Foley. Under 13s and Under 12s – G. Kirby, Declan Gillane, B. Foley and J. Gorman. Under 10s – R. Fitzgerald, D. Harmon, P. Lynch and J.Gorman. Under 8s – P. Earls, P. Maher, M. Carroll, B. Daly. Under 6 – D. Foley, G. Balfry, G. O’Donnell and A. Bennis.
