Club Notes 2012

20th December 2012

There was a large attendance at the Club AGM and a strong turnout by members of the senior hurling panel. Martin Ryan’s Secretary’s Report was a comprehensive account about the performance of all teams within the senior club. At the close of his report, Martin thanked Oliver Mann for his contributions to Patrickswell GAA Club and wishing him luck in his new role as Limerick County Board Chairman. Martin also thanked the Juvenile Club, the Camogie Club and club sponsors Duggan Systems Limited for their continued support. The Secretary’s Report was warmly endorsed by applause.

The Treasurer’s Report was delivered by Nelius Hayes. The financial performance during the year had been satisfactory. Any questions taken from the floor were addressed in a straightforward manner. Nelius reminded the attendance that cost control was still critically important.

The keynote speech of the night was the Chairman’s Address by Paul Foley. At the beginning of his speech, Paul acknowledged the wonderful performance of the Under 14 hurlers at Feile na nGael. The team and management had been a credit to the club. In addition, he thanked the entire Juvenile Club under the chairmanship of Raymond Fitzgerald.

Paul noted that every adult team had progressed to the latter stages of their respective County competitions. The Junior B footballers and Minor hurlers reached finals, the Under 21 hurlers and Junior A hurlers reached semi-finals and the Senior Hurlers were narrowly pipped in the County quarter-final. The Chairman thanked the various teams and management for their commitment. Paul especially thanked Brian Lohan, Anthony Carmody, Tom O’Brien, John O’Donnell and Declan O’Grady for their stewardship of the senior hurlers. The Chairman promised every possible support to the new manager, Natal O’Grady, and his fellow management team of Michael Scanlon and Brendan Cawley.

Paul paid tribute to sponsors Duggan Systems Limited and the stalwarts of our club. For the Club Lotto, Paul thanked McDermotts for the use of their facilities and Nelius, Seamus, Gerry, Tommy, Christy and Donie for running the operation. There was also gratitude for the local businesses that sell lotto tickets. The medical staff were also thanked for their support of club teams, namely Niamh Geoghegan, Denise O’Carroll, Jean Liston and physio Tinieke Nuijten.

The Chairman also drew attention to the infrastructure development at the club. These include upgraded changing rooms, new showers, new plumbing system, new heating system, new windows and the establishment of a gymnasium. In 2013, the club will move forward with a hurling wall and a running track.

Paul expressed his gratitude to Bernard Hayes for his operation of the Limerick Club Development Draw, to the O’Brien family for their sponsorship of the Micheál O’Brien Tournament and to O’Brien’s Pharmacy for sponsoring the Parish League. Gary Kirby was also thanked for his trojan work on behalf of the club at Patrickswell National School.

While the success of the Under 14 hurlers is much heralded, the Under 13 hurlers also scooped a County League title at the Gaelic Grounds. Congratulations to the players, their families and Gary Kirby, Damian Gillane and Ger Considine. Cian Lynch also won an Under 16 All-Ireland hurling medal in the service of Limerick. The officers of the Juvenile Club work very hard and the Chairman paid tribute to Raymond Fitzgerald, Pa Dundon and Michael Joyce.

Paul Foley also thanked his fellow officers and the Club President and Vice Presidents. It was acknowledged that Oliver Mann’s election to Chairman of the County Board is a great honour for Oliver personally and for the club as a whole. Willie Fenton was praised for his work as Club Caretaker and Dick Nash is wished every success in taking the role. Deceased members of the club were also remembered, including past Chairman Gerard O’Brien.

The efforts of Scor were also acknowledged, in particular the club members and parents who participated in 2012 under the tutelage of Muirne Bennis and Michael & Mary Shinnors. Club Patron Monsignor Lane was thanked for his guiding presence in the club. The camogie club were recognised for their major contribution to community life. Gloria O’Donnell was complimented for her work as Chairwoman of the camogie club over the past few years. Breda Leahy will assume Gloria’s role in 2013 and best wishes were offered. The Chairman also congratulated the girls who won the Under 14B County title led by Gary & Carmel Kirby, Liam & Denise O’Carroll and Kieran O’Keeffe.

Paul closed his address by highlighting our recent achievements. Hard work over the past few years has delivered six trophies in 2012. There has been much progress in our juvenile and underage players, our finances are stable and club facilities have improved significantly. There is confidence that Patrickswell GAA Club will achieve greater success on the playing fields next year. However, this cannot be achieved without unity and discipline.

Speeches were also delivered by Willie Foley as President, Gerry Bennis as Vice President, Monsignor Lane as Club Patron, Raymond Fitzgerald as Juvenile Club Chairman and Breda Leahy as Camogie Club Chairwoman. PJ O’Grady was ratified as Under 21 hurling manager, Anthony Foley as Junior A hurling manager, John Tuohy as Minor hurling manager and Michael Woulfe as Junior B football manager.

After the AGM, club members retired to Punch’s Bar for the Club Person of the Year Award. There was delight when outgoing Camogie Club Chairwoman Gloria O’Donnell was announced as the winner. Gloria is at the heart of everything in Patrickswell GAA Club. She works diligently for the camogie club and drives so many of the club’s fundraisers with good natured efficiency. Well done Gloria!! It is a richly deserved honour.

In a reception on Sunday at the Cu Chulainn Bar, new County Board Chairman Oliver Mann was welcomed home from the convention. Paul Foley congratulated Oliver on his achievement and presented his predecessor with a crystal vase as a token of our esteem. The Christmas Raffle took place afterwards and the top three prize-winners were Kate Fitzgerald, Michael McCarthy of Dublin and Julia Doyle.

15th November 2012

The Junior B footballers were narrowly beaten by Newcastle West in the County Final at Ballyagran. Newcastle West started brightly and put Patrickswell on the back foot with three early points. However, the ‘Well eventually found their rhythm and the momentum swung back with four points from Jack Kelleher (0-2), Lar Considine and Mark Carmody. Unfortunately, our opponents then surged back into the game and notched four points without reply and led by 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time.

The second half began with two more points from Newcastle West and a widening deficit of 0-9 to 0-4. There was no panic as David Woulfe, Jack Kelleher, Mark Carmody and Brian Murray dragged the ‘Well to within a single point at 0-9 to 0-8. There was no doubt that the boys were back in serious contention. Their surge was stemmed when Newcastle West shocked Patrickswell with two clinical goals to steal a 2-9 to 0-8 advantage. Lar Considine hit the net with a cool finish, but it was too late to affect the outcome. The final score was 2-10 to 1-9. The players and management deserve great credit for an enthralling season.

The Senior Hurling Team Management for 2013 was ratified at a committee meeting last week. We are delighted to announce that Natal O’Grady is the new manager and will be supported by selectors Brendan Cawley and Michael Scanlon.

The Club AGM is scheduled for Tuesday 11th December. The meeting will be followed by the Club Person of the Year Award and Christmas Raffle in Punch’s.

The annual Mass for deceased members will take place on Sunday 9th December at 10am.

8th November 2012

The Junior B footballers have reached the County Final after a convincing 1-8 to 0-7 win over Feenagh Kilmeedy. Our opponents dominated the opening ten minutes and were rewarded with two unanswered points. Patrickswell eventually found their rhythm and controlled the remainder of the first half. Lar Considine recorded the first point and this was followed by an equalising point from Barry Foley. There was great excitement as Darragh Bennis’ shot was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by the Feenagh Kilmeedy goalkeeper. However, it was a temporary reprieve as Darragh Bennis scored Patrickswell’s third point. Lar Considine and Barry Foley added more points as the ‘Well reached half-time with a 0-5 to 0-2 advantage.

Mark Carmody registered the first point of the second half, but Feenagh Kilmeedy replied with their own point. The game was ultimately decided when Patrickswell were awarded a penalty for a despairing foul to deny a certain goal. Lar Considine stepped up to stroke the ball calmly into the net. The ‘Well added another point to lead seven points by 1-7 to 0-3 with fifteen minutes left. Feenagh Kilmeedy launched a comeback with three consecutive points and reduced the deficit to 1-7 to 0-6. Thankfully Lar Considine scored an insurance point before our opponents hit their own point.

The County Final against Newcastle West is scheduled for Sunday 11th November at 3pm in Ballyagran. Best wishes to all the players and management.

Work will commence on the club hurling wall within the coming weeks. It is a major development for the club and its commitment to improving facilities. The Christmas Raffle sales will get underway very soon.

1st November 2012

The Junior B footballers progressed to the County semi-final after a comfortable victory over Oola in Ballybricken.

Oola were depleted for the match, but they showed a great spirit to compete with the ‘Well on a cold and damp afternoon. The first half was largely one-way traffic as Patrickswell dominated possession and plundered points. However, they were unable to hit the net and led by 0-7 to 0-1 at the interval.

The second half was a more even contest, as Oola benefitted from the wind. The ‘Well were never seriously threatened as they surged into a 0-11 to 0-1 lead. Oola scored a penalty near the end and the referee blew his whistle at 0-12 to 1-2. Well done to the players and management for this workmanlike victory.

The semi-final is slated for Sunday 4th November at 12 noon against Feenagh Kilmeedy in Rathkeale. Please make every effort to attend the match.

The Scor teams are still in rehearsal for competition. Best wishes to Muirne Bennis and everyone participating. The Christmas Raffle will be underway in the coming weeks. It’s a major fundraiser for the club and a great chance to win a Christmas gift.

25th October 2012

The Under 13 hurlers had an excellent victory over Mungret to win the Premier League final last Wednesday night. There were fine performances from Daniel Feasey, Josh Considine, Conor Fitzgerald, Clive Kirby, Jason Gillane and Barry Kiely. Well done to all involved in the success. This was the club’s sixth trophy this year, with four of the victories at underage level.

The Junior Footballers will play their quarter final this weekend. Details of the fixture will be circulated through the club messaging service.

The next phase of the club development programme will commence in the coming weeks under the supervision of Michael Joyce. 18th October 2012

Patrickswell were crowned the Limerick Post City Junior B Football Champions on Sunday last, emerging victorious over Na Piarsaigh in the replay at Monaleen with the scoreline 3 – 12 to 1 – 10.Two first half goals by Lar Considine created the platform for this very spirited performance and victory and is the fifth trophy the club has secured so far this year including underage and camogie. A late second half goal by Jack Kelleher who latched onto a long delivery by Shane Dinnage secured the victory for the Well. There were enjoyable scenes when Mark Griffin was presented with the cup by City Board secretary Eamonn Phelan. The team was Garry Murphy, Jason Griffin ,Mark Griffin (Capt),Breen O Sullivan, Sean O Brien, Nigel Foley, Dean Cawley, Barry Foley, Brian Byrnes, Mark Carmody, Lar Considine, Shane Quinlan, Shane Dinnage, Gearoid Balfry, David Woulfe Subs used :Paul O Grady, Liam O Riordan, Jack Kelleher, Paul O Connor, Niall Carrig. Team management : Michael Woulfe, Kevin O Brien, Joseph Tierney. Medical/First Aid Jean Liston.

Best wishes to former Club Chairman and current Club Vice President Oliver Mann who will be contesting the chairmanship of the County Board in the coming weeks.

Work is ongoing with the Club Lottery every Monday night for which the support of every club member is needed. The club is very grateful to all ticket sellers and purchasers for their continued loyalty to the Patrickswell GAA Club. Work will also be shortly commencing for the Christmas raffle with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

The club continues its focus on Scor as the winter season approaches. Best wishes to Muirne Bennis with her endeavours in this regard. A very sizeable turnout gathered at the clubhouse last Thursday night for initial practice sessions.

The Under 13 hurlers will by this stage have played their County Premier League Final at the Gaelic Grounds against Mungret. The club continues to work extremely hard at underage level and recognises that this will be the platform for success in the future.

11th October 2012

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Patrickswell GAA Club. The club won two Under 14 County Finals, but lost the County Minor final and bowed out of the Junior A County Championship.

At the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, our Minors faced Doon in the County Final. It was a tough assignment on paper, but confidence was high that the players could emulate the success of 2008. The match started positively as Kevin O’Brien notched the first point. However, Doon stated their intentions with four unanswered points. Patrickswell managed to stem the tide with points from Jack Kelleher and Kevin O’Brien to trail by 0-4 to 0-3. The remainder of the first half was incredibly tight, but Patrickswell reached the interval at 0-7 to 0-6 ahead when Andrew O’Carroll struck three points and Cian Lynch chipped in with another.

Doon were on the offensive from the start of the second half and were amply rewarded with three points to lead by 0-9 to 0-7. Kevin O’Brien scored a point before Doon decisively turned the game with a goal and two points. With ten minutes remaining, the lads trailed by 1-11 to 0-8. Andrew O’Carroll claimed three points before the end of the game, but each point was immediately cancelled out by Doon. With a minute left, Doon held a 1-13 to 0-11 advantage. The door was firmly closed on Patrickswell when Doon bagged a second goal. The referee sounded the final whistle and Doon were champions by 2-13 to 0-11. Commiserations to the players and management for such a disappointing end to an impressive season.

On Saturday afternoon, the Junior A hurlers faced a tough assignment against St. Kieran’s in the County Championship semi-final. The first half was an even tussle as both sides competed strongly. At half-time, the scores were deadlocked at 1-5. The West men turned up the tempo in the second half and ran out 1-14 to 1-8 winners. Hard luck to the players and management. The season exceeded expectations and great pride should be taken from the performances.

There were jubilant scenes in Rathkeale on Saturday as the Under 14 hurlers beat Na Piarsaigh in their third final encounter of the season. This time round, the ‘Well added the County League to Limerick Feile. The first half was running smoothly with Patrickswell 1-4 to 0-1 ahead and almost camped in the Na Piarsaigh half. However, there were anxious moments as the Caherdavin boys started to score from long distance before half-time. The interval score was 1-4 to 0-4 in favour of the ‘Well.

If Patrickswell were nervous, there were no outwards signs. The second half was a display of vintage hurling from our boys as Na Piarsaigh failed to register a score. The Patrickswell attack was a handful and added another 1-5 to the first half tally. At the other end of the pitch, the Blue and Gold defenders had Na Piarsaigh under lock and key. The final result was a 2-9 to 0-4 triumph and Darragh Aherne proudly lifted the County League trophy to cap a fine season. Well done to all the players and management. It was a very profitable season for the Under 14s and provided optimism for the future.

On the same day, the Camogie girls won the Under 14 County B title by 3-4 to 3-2 against Murroe Boher. Each girl showed true Patrickswell passion and spirit as they battled intensely with Murroe Boher. Well done to the girls and their management team for bringing home the silverware. There were fine displays of camogie from each member on the team, with scores from Niamh O’Keeffe (0-4), Leah O’Carroll (1-0), Emma Geraghty (1-0) and the winning goal from captain Shannon Gillane. There is no doubt that goals win matches, and it’s fair to say that goalkeeper Sarah Gillane pulled off some mighty saves to keep us in the game. Well done girls. Keep up the good work. There is an Under 6 and Under 8 camogie blitz on Saturday 13th October at 11am in Patrickswell against Croagh Kilfinny and Crecora.

Congratulations to Amy O’Dea, who scooped €500 in the Club Development Draw for October.

4th October 2012

This is a bumper week for Patrickswell GAA club with, in particular, a very exciting weekend ahead. It was also a very profitable past week for the club as the Junior hurlers and footballers made progress in their respective championships.

The Junior A hurlers defeated Doon by 1-7 to 0-7 in the County Championship quarter-final at Bruff. Meanwhile, the Junior B footballers defeated St. Patrick’s by 1-12 to 0-8 in the City Championship semi-final replay. The Junior B footballers will play Na Piarsaigh on Tuesday 2nd October at 5.45pm in Mungret. Please make every effort to attend these fixtures as your support is very important.

The final of the Michael O’Brien Senior Hurling Tournament between Sixmilebridge and Ballybrown is also fixed for Saturday 6th October at 4pm. The club is very grateful to the teams that have participated in this competition (including Croom earlier this year) and looks forward to an excellent final between two very accomplished teams. The club is especially grateful to the O’Brien family of Lurriga for their sponsorship of this event in honour of our former president Michael.

The Under 8 and Under 6 hurlers played Claughaun on Friday night. On Saturday, the Under 10 hurlers hosted the Munster Inter-City blitz. Passage West, Newmarket on Fergus and Adare provided the opposition to two very impressive Patrickswell teams.

On Sunday, the Parish League took centre stage. Once again, this event was kindly sponsored by O’Brien’s Pharmacy of Patrickswell. It was a great chance for our Under 10, Under 8 and Under 6 boys and girls to showcase their skills. After some titanic battles, three teams finished level on points! Mary Kerins presented the cup to the winning captains Niall Kerins, Patrick Kirby and Paul Lynch.

The boys and girls were split into four teams as follows: Team Cork (N. Kerins, P. Kiely, C. Gorman, J. Gorman, K. O’Donnell, K. Kiely, C O’Brien, J. Fitzgerald, I. Moloney, L. O’Brien and E. The Under 6s played separate games. The following players took part – S. Carey, S. Lynch, S. Buston, A. Kelly, A. O’Neill, J. Foley, L. Foley, P. McGrath, L. McGrath, D. McDonagh, C. Fitzgerald, D. O’Brien, J. Murray, J. Allen, L. Considine, J. O’Neill, L. Griffin and E. Dundon).

The Club Scor committee is already hard at work in preparation for the Scor na n-Og competition in the formulation of teams for participation. Best of luck to Muirne Bennis and her team in their endeavours.

27th September 2012

The Junior A hurlers claimed the City Championship after a closely fought 3-8 to 2-10 victory over Na Piarsaigh at the Gaelic Grounds. Patrickswell’s reward is a County quarter-final against Doon. In keeping with family traditions, John Fitzgerald was emulating his father Jack, who also won the City Junior Hurling title in 1957.

It is an extremely worthy local cause and the club are delighted to lend assistance. We are grateful to the Cu Chulainn Bar and Louise Foley for organising, promoting and hosting the event.

20th September 2012

The Junior A hurlers defeated neighbours Ballybrown by 1-11 to 0-10 in the City Championship semi-final replay. This fine result sets up a City Final with Na Piarsaigh and guarantees the ‘Well a County quarter-final berth. Congratulations to the team and management on their achievement.

On Tuesday 18th September, the Minor hurlers face Na Piarsaigh in the Premier Championship semi-final at 6.30pm. The Minors have been in excellent form , but Na Piarsaigh will provide a stiff test.

The Junior B footballers contest a City Championship semi-final against St. Patricks on Wednesday 19th September at 6.15pm in Mungret.

The Under 14 hurlers suffered a heartbreaking two point defeat of 3-5 to 1-9 in the County Final. After a sluggish start where Patrickswell were four points down, we came back to lead at half time by one point. The boys fell behind to another Na Piarsaigh goal midway through the second half, but the ‘Well fought back to lead by one point heading into the last moments of the game. A devastating scrambled goal from Na Piarsaigh decided the match with no time to reply. It was a game of outstanding quality; however this offers little consolation to the team and management. The league final will provide the third instalment of Patrickswell v Na Piarsaigh finals at this level in 2012.

The Under 13 hurlers progressed in the All County Hurling League with one game to spare after a 2-6 to 1-3 win over neighbours Ballybrown. Patrickswell had some great performances from Daniel Feasey, Eoin Carroll, Josh Considine, Jason Gillane and Calvin Carroll.

In the Under 14 Camogie quarter-finals, Patrickswell beat Templeglantine by 3-8 to 2-0. This victory has set up a semi-final against Ahane. Best of luck to the girls.

The final of the Michael O’Brien Senior Hurling Tournament between Sixmilebridge and Ballybrown is fixed for Saturday 6th October at 4pm. The club is very grateful to the teams that have participated in this competition (including Croom earlier this year) and looks forward to an excellent final on the 6th between two very accomplished teams. The club is especially grateful to the O’Brien family of Lurriga for their sponsorship of this event in honour of our former president Michael.

In support of the Live 95 FM Children’s Ark at the Regional Hospital Fundraising Campaign, the club will host a coffee morning on Monday 24th September at 10.30 am at the clubhouse. Further details will be circulated through the club messaging service closer to the date.

13th September 2012

The Junior B footballers qualified for the City Championship semi-finals after a comprehensive 5-10 to 0-4 victory over Claughaun and after receiving a walkover from Ballinacurra Gaels. Well done to the players for making the knockout stages of the competition.

The Junior A hurlers are playing Ballybrown in the City Semi Final replay on Saturday 15th September in Mungret at 5.30 pm.

The Minor hurlers are back in action in the Premier Hurling Championship on Tuesday 18th September. It’s a major semi-final encounter with Na Piarsaigh. Please make a huge effort to support the team.

The Under 14 hurlers survived a stiff test in the County semi-final by winning 1-11 to 1-9 against Murroe Boher. After playing with a strong breeze in the opening half, the ‘Well were three points clear at half-time. The boys produced a battling performance in the second half and a clinical goal from Darragh Aherne gave Patrickswell a commanding five point lead in injury time. A goal for Murroe Boher left us with a dangerous two point lead with ninety seconds of stoppage time to play. In the dying seconds, Murroe Boher broke clean through and a devastating goal looked inevitable. However, a superb save from Stephen Dunworth kept our championship hopes alive. Thankfully, the referee blew the whistle when Murroe’s resulting 65’ was cleared. The team showed great character to set up a County Final against Na Piarsaigh.

The Under 12 hurlers had two teams competing in the final day blitz in UL last Friday night. The boys played Kilteely Dromkeen, Ahane and Na Piarsaigh. Well done to this team who have continuously improved throughout the year.

The Under 8 hurlers hosted a blitz last Friday night. The visitors were Crecora, Ballinacurra Gaels and Granagh Ballingarry. Patrickswell played some great hurling and lined out as Christy Carroll, Liam Fitzgerald, Jack McNamara, Kevin Kiely, Mark Fitzgerald, Alan Fitzgerald, Kai Chu, James Fitzgerald, Paddy McGrath, Conor O’Brien, Billy Earls, Barry Foley, Matt Daly and Hughie Maher. Thanks to Pat Earls, Breda Daly and Peter Maher for a well organised and run event.

Best wishes to every Juvenile Club member who is getting their Junior Certificate results this week.

The second half momentum remained with the ‘Well as they established an advantage of 0-14 to 0-11 with ten minutes remaining. The outcome was determined when Lar Considine fired a decisive goal to create an unassailable margin. At the final whistle, Patrickswell claimed a 1-16 to 0-13 victory and won the group. However, Garryspillane sneaked into the quarter-final by virtue of Doon’s victory over Effin. Patrickswell will meet neighbours Adare in the quarter-final after their crushing victory over Emmets. It’s a mouth-watering fixture for hurling fans.

The Junior B footballers suffered a narrow 2-3 to 0-11 defeat against Na Piarsaigh in the City Championship. There are three games to play against Ballinacurra Gaels, Claughaun and St. Patrick’s.

A goalscoring spree from Josh Carey and some fine points from Darren O’Flaherty helped the boys to victory. Wins over Bruff (home) and Kilmallock (away) finished off the perfect week.

12th July 2012

The Under 14 hurlers performed heroically at Feile na nGael in Dublin last week. Despite the atrocious weather, Patrickswell produced excellent performances before bowing out in the semi-final. The boys returned to Limerick as one of the best four teams in the country. In the opening match, Patrickswell faced their host club from St. Vincent’s. It was a fiercely contested battle; however the visitors edged the hosts by 3-6 to 3-5. The first obstacle had been overcome and nerves were steadied. (Please click here for some action photos courtesy of St. Vincent’s…)

The next match against Kilmacud Crokes was a classic game of two halves. Patrickswell were electric in the first half and surged into the lead with goals from Jordan Higgins and Jamie Dillon. At half-time, the lead was a very comfortable 2-1 to 0-1. However, Crokes were not willing to concede defeat and dominated the second half. Amazingly, they held the ‘Well scoreless and clawed back the deficit to earn a 2-1 to 1-4 draw. This result meant that the boys had to beat James Stephens of Kilkenny, who had secured two victories to date.

The group decider didn’t start positively as the Kilkenny side raced into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead. The ‘Well regained their composure and began to chip away at the margin. John Flynn was in great form as he nailed three consecutive frees to level the scores at 1-1 to 0-4. At the break, the game was delicately poised at 1-2 to 0-5. The second half was a low-scoring affair and extremely tense. The game was decided by a late free that John Flynn sailed over the bar. There were jubilant scenes as Patrickswell emerged as 0-7 to 1-3 victors against the odds. It was heartbreaking for The Village, but the Limerick boys had topped the group undefeated.

The gruelling schedule continued into the wet Dublin evening. Patrickswell faced strong opposition from St. Brigid’s of Dublin. The game was played in appalling conditions that did not suit hurling. St. Brigid’s adapted faster and were soon in control. An early goal gave them the upper hand as they built a 1-4 to 0-2 lead. The Patrickswell recovery began with a goal from Jordan Higgins and a subsequent point from John Flynn to slash the score at 1-4 to 1-3 down. Unfortunately, the Dublin side found an extra gear and tacked on three unanswered points to win by 1-7 to 1-3. It was disappointment for the tired Patrickswell players, but they had performed admirably and represented Limerick with distinction. Indeed, St. Brigid’s became the eventual winners with an extra time triumph over Clarinbridge.

Patrickswell GAA wishes to thank St. Vincent’s GAA and Dublin GAA for the great hospitality that was shown to the players, parents and officials from our club. We look forward to returning the favour to visitors in 2013. Well done to all the players, coaches, parents and supporters – including Janet O’Carroll for her superb coverage on Twitter. We are also grateful to everyone who attended the homecoming parade and those who provided refreshments in the clubhouse.

The Minor hurlers maintained their 100% record with a comfortable 2-20 to 1-9 victory over Deel Rangers. With two games to play against Balbec Gaels and Shamrock Gaels, the ‘Well are in a very favourable position.

The Junior A hurlers suffered a 0-12 to 0-7 reverse against St. Patrick’s in the City Championship.

Congratulations to Conor Murray and Trudy McDermott, who both scooped €250 in the Limerick Club (Mackey) Development Draw for July.

If Patrickswell win the group, the semi final is scheduled for 7pm on Friday night in St. Vincent’s. The Grand Final is in Croke Park on Saturday at 3pm. It’s been a terrific season for the Under 14s to date and we believe there is a great chance to bring the national title back to Limerick in style. Best of luck to the boys and the management.

As a club, we would like to express our condolences to the Long family and our friends at Kilmallock GAA. You are in our thoughts. It was poignant that James scored the winning goal for Kilmallock to edge out the ‘Well.

14th June 2012

Patrickswell’s senior hurlers will play Granagh Ballingarry at 7.30 pm in Croom for the first round of the Croom Senior Hurling Tournament this coming Saturday 17th June.

The Junior B footballers lost the City League Final to St. Patrick’s last week, despite a spirited performance against the favourites. The first half was a tight affair and the ‘Well trailed by 1-3 to 0-4 at the interval. St. Patrick’s scored two damaging goals at the start of the second half and closed out the game by 3-8 to 0-8. Hard luck to the players and management.

The Under 14 hurlers faced a stiff test when they faced Murroe Boher in the County Championship last week. The boys trailed by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time as Murroe Boher hurled impressively. However, the game changed dramatically as Patrickswell rattled four goals in a devastating ten-minute spell. Their opponents never recovered from the blow and the ‘Well triumphed by 5-9 to 2-9. The League Final against Na Piarsaigh succumbed to the dreadful weather, but it has been rescheduled for Friday 15th June at 7.30pm in Knockea (South Liberties’ ground).

The Under 12 hurlers took part in a very enjoyable blitz at Na Piarsaigh in Cork. The panel comprised 23 players and the opposition was Na Piarsaigh (Cork), Sarsfields (Cork) and Moycarkey Borris (Tipperary). Patrickswell won one match against Moycarkey Borris, but were defeated against the Cork teams. Every player had the opportunity to play in a game. The overall standard of hurling at the blitz was very high and Patrickswell were complimented for their abilities. In the Skills Competition, we were awarded second place after four skills were tested – namely long puck, dribbling, free taking and line balls.

Club member Patrick Kirby won €250 in the recent Limerick Club (Mackey) Draw. Remember that 50%+ of the proceeds are retained by the club.

Commiserations to the Limerick footballers, whose epic comeback against Clare fell short by a single point.

7th June 2012

The senior hurlers’ progress towards the Championship quarter-finals was frustrated by a late Doon equaliser in Bruff on Sunday. The match was played on a sodden pitch after a day of incessant rain. Patrickswell were first on the scoreboard with an early point, but Doon responded immediately. The opening fifteen minutes was delicately balanced as the ‘Well took a 0-5 to 0-4 lead. However, Doon produced a dominant ten minute spell where they rattled three points without reply. Thankfully, a late point before the interval meant that Patrickswell only trailed by 0-6 to 0-7 at half-time.

The second half began with a similar trend to the first half. There was very little to separate the teams as points were exchanged and goal opportunities were extremely limited. With fifteen minutes remaining, Doon held a narrow 0-11 to 0-9 advantage. The ‘Well increased their tempo and placed Doon on the back foot with three crucial unanswered points. Normal time ran out and Patrickswell resolutely defended a 0-12 to 0-11 margin. The East Limerick men were given one final chance and clinched an equalising point. Within a few seconds of the restart, the referee blew the final whistle.

Doon had kept alive their Championship aspirations and Patrickswell were denied a quarter-final berth for the time being. In Group Two, Garryspillane and the ‘Well have three points, while Effin and Doon have one point apiece. All the teams can still qualify for the knockout stages.

The Junior A hurlers were defeated 3-14 to 0-12 by St. Patrick’s in the City League semi-final. Hard luck to all the players and management. Elsewhere, the Junior B footballers beat Claughaun in a City League semi-final replay by 2-10 to 1-6. Their reward is a final against St. Patrick’s.

17th May 2012

The Senior hurlers snatched a late victory against Effin by producing a robust second half performance in Bruff. Effin scored the opening point, but Patrickswell were quick to respond with three unanswered points of their own. However, last year’s Munster Intermediate champions stunned the ‘Well with a purple patch of one goal and three points. The remainder of the half yielded four more points each. At the interval, Effin held a deserved 1-8 to 0-7 lead. There was much for the ‘Well to ponder during the half-time break.

Patrickswell started the second half with two points, but Effin increased their advantage with three additional points. Our prospects looked distinctly unfavourable at 1-11 to 0-9. Key substitutions breathed new life into the ‘Well as they began to grind down their opponents. In a significant fifteen minute spell, Patrickswell notched five points to Effin’s two scores, and trailed by 1-13 to 0-14. Effin were on the back foot, but time was running out. With a few minutes of normal time left on the clock, Kevin O’Brien popped up to produce a neat goal. The ‘Well led by 1-14 to 1-13 and were relieved to close out the match. Effin were distraught, but they had announced themselves on the senior stage.

The Junior A hurlers won their second match against Na Piarsaigh in the City League by 1-10 to 0-12. They sit at the top of the table with their final group match against Kildimo Pallaskenry. Well done to all the players and management.

The Under 14 camogie girls were beaten by Kilmallock in the final round of the league.

The Senior hurlers begin their County Championship campaign against Effin in Bruff on Saturday at 7.15pm. Best wishes to the players and the management in the championship. The other two teams in the group are Garryspillane and Doon.

The club are delighted that James Carrig, Diarmuid Byrnes, Jack Kelleher, Kevin O’Brien and Cian Lynch were part of Limerick’s Minor victory against Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. It’s a great honour to have so many Patrickswell players on the panel.

3rd May 2012

Our new gymnasium was formally opened last Wednesday night during a social event at the clubhouse. In front of a large gathering, Monsignor Michael Lane blessed the gymnasium before joining Vice Presidents Michael Fitzgerald and Gerry Bennis for the ribbon cutting. After the formal opening, there were inspired speeches from Club Chairman Paul Foley, Club Vice President Gerry Bennis and Limerick County Board Vice Chairman Oliver Mann (former chairman). The theme of the speeches was recognition of the illustrious past and looking towards a bright future. The newly-constructed gymnasium should facilitate the latter.

The victorious Under 13 hurling and camogie teams from 2011 were presented with their medals by Gerry Bennis and Michael Fitzgerald. It was a great milestone for the club last year and indicated strong foundations for the future.

The club also took the opportunity to honour Michael Fitzgerald and Gerry Bennis with presentations in recognition of their outstanding service to Patrickswell. Their families were also in attendance and their wives Christina and Nora were also presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of their longstanding support.

Two teams will emerge from the group stages to play in the semi-finals. The Junior B footballers were defeated by Claughaun and have one remaining fixture against Ballinacurra Gaels.

The Under 14 Camogie team finished second in their qualifying group for the Feile Camogie. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get through to the knock out stages following a 2-4 to 0-0 defeat to Crecora and a 2-0 to 1-0 victory over Treaty Gaels. Because of some late fixture changes, Patrickswell had to compete without some leading figures and this made the challenge more difficult to overcome. The girls competed very honestly and there are great prospects for this young team in the future.

The Active Retirement Group held an excellent fundraiser at the GAA Clubhouse on Sunday afternoon last when a large crowd turned out to hear Free Beer in aid of the Adare Alzheimers Centre. 5th April 2012

The Minor hurlers enjoyed a winning start to the Premier Championship after a stirring second half comeback against Ballybrown in Clarina. The hosts started the match at a higher tempo and built a 0-5 to 0-2 advantage within twenty minutes. Both sides struck a number of wides in the opening half as they attempted to find their range. At the interval, Ballybrown led by 0-6 to 0-4.

Patrickswell faced an uphill battle after Ballybrown scored a penalty and a point at the beginning of the second half. The deficit had increased to six points, but the ‘Well did not panic. Their reply was immediate when Jack Kelleher struck the net. The goal energised our players and turned the tide of the match. Ballybrown had no answer to the Patrickswell onslaught as a flurry of unanswered points forced the visitors 1-11 to 1-7 ahead.

Ballybrown snatched two late points and set up a grandstand finale as dusk fell. A last-minute free dropped dangerously into Patrickswell territory, but the defenders managed to clear the threat. The final whistle sounded and Patrickswell celebrated an impressive recovery and opening day victory. Well done to the players and management. The Minors’ next game is at home to Mungret on Good Friday at 7pm.

The Figure Dancers finished runners-up to Spa of Kerry in the Munster Senior Scor Final. It was agonisingly close for Patrickswell’s dancers. Hard luck to the competitors and their dedicated mentors. They had performed admirably throughout the competition at County and Provincial level.

The Under 16 camogie players lost to Causeway, while the Under 14 team were defeated by Monaleen.

The Shannonsiders qualified for the final after a comfortable win in Antrim and by Clare defeating Offaly. A return to the “big time” beckons.

29th March 2012

The Under 14 hurlers made an impressive start to Feile na nGael with victory over Monaleen away. On a cool and breezy morning, Patrickswell attacked from the opening whistle and devastated the hosts by scoring 2-1 within the opening five minutes. The goalscorers were Jordan Higgins and John Flynn. Monaleen came back into the contest as the first half developed, but the ‘Well established a comfortable 3-3 to 0-2 interval lead when John Flynn struck the net again.

Patrickswell were playing with great teamwork and never lost focus during the second half. Monaleen could not make an impact on the deficit and Jordan Higgins’ second goal secured a 4-7 to 0-3 win for the ‘Well. The boys now move to the tournament semi-final.

Congratulations to our participants in the County Senior Scor Final. Patrickswell claimed the Figure Dancing title and were named joint Club of the Year. The club performed very strongly with a number of second and third places and were most unlucky not to secure more than one overall county championship. The revitalisation of Scor in the club is one of the success stories of recent years and last year’s All Ireland Senior success is a reflection of this. Well done to the club’s Senior Scor sub committee who put in such trojan work this year – in particular Muirne Bennis, Michael Shinnors, Gloria O’Donnell, Mary Shinnors, Paula Dillon, Rose Kelleher and Niamh Geoghegan. Your achievements over the past three years have been remarkable.

Brothers turned opponents for 70 minutes as the O’Brien boys faced each other in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Tom O’Brien was representing University of Limerick, while Sean turned out for Limerick Institute of Technology. The game ended in a 0-16 to 1-13 draw, so the boys will have to meet again.

19th January 2012

The Juvenile Club AGM for 2011 took place last Wednesday, with a healthy attendance at the clubhouse. Raymond Fitzgerald delivered his Chairman’s Address at the beginning of the meeting. He started with a brief review of the past year. At Under 6 level, the players learnt the fundamentals of hurling from their coaches. Youngsters need to establish the core skills in their formative years to avoid bad habits in later life. The Under 8s played in four blitzes, while the Under 10s participated in six blitzes and the Parish League. The Juvenile Club wishes to thank the O’Brien Family for their continued sponsorship of this competition. The Under 12s recorded six wins and one defeat in a very profitable season. The Under 13s were crowned County Champions in early September on a great day for the club. The boys also won the prestigious Rose Cup in Tralee. Both the Under 14s and Under 16s reached County quarter-finals, where they lost to Mungret and Monaleen respectively.

Raymond highlighted the excellent relationship that the Juvenile Club enjoys with Patrickswell National School. The link is critical for the continued success of Patrickswell GAA Club. The Under 11 hurlers and Under 13 footballers beat Milford and Ballybrown in their respective finals. In closing, the chairman thanked the coaches, parents and committee for their help in 2011. The club is looking forward to more trophies in 2012.

Senior Club Chairman Paul Foley commended the great work of the Juvenile Club and the commitment of its members. He identified the Under 13 County Championship and Rose Cup victories as the highlights of the year. The recent construction of the club gymnasium will benefit the young players in the coming years. Paul also welcomed the relationship with UL for strength and conditioning. Patrickswell GAA Club is moving in the right direction; however finding the extra resilience to win trophies is crucial. Gloria O’Donnell said that the Camogie Club is always eager to work with the Juvenile Club. She was delighted that the girls continue to play in the Parish League.

At the conclusion of the AGM, the coaching staff was ratified for 2012. Under 16s will be coached by Conor Murray, David Mann, Dessie Foley and Philip Foley. The Under 14s and Under 15s will be guided by the successful Under 13 coaches from 2011 – Paddy Flynn, Frank Dillon, Willie Leahy, Richard Maher and Mike Quinn. The Under 12s and Under 13s panel is Gary Kirby, Ger Considine, Damien Gillane, Barry Foley and Declan Gillane. The Under 10s are coached by Dominic Harmon, Pa Lynch, Raymond Fitzgerald, John Tuohy and John Gorman. The Under 8 coaching team is Pat Earls, Peter Maher and Eoin Bennis. The Under 6s are trained by Dessie Foley, Denver Morrissey, Gearoid Balfry, Ian Kelliher and James Mann.
