JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers suffered disappointment in the County Championship final against Croagh-Kilfinny. Earlier in the week, Patrickswell had overcome Dromcollogher-Broadford in the semi-final by 3-15 to 0-11 to reach the decider. The opening stages of the final were fiercely contested and the rate of scoring was initially low. Croagh-Kilfinny struck two points within three minutes, before Paul O’Brien and Barry Foley restored parity by the 13th minute. Our opponents nudged ahead with a fresh point; however Peter Harty equalised in the 15th minute. The next ten minutes were dominated by Croagh-Kilfinny and they were rewarded by four consecutive points. Patrickswell trailed by 0-7 to 0-3 and needed a response. When Barry Foley slotted over a free, Patrickswell were within a goal. Once again, Croagh-Kilfinny increased the tempo and secured three more points without reply. At the close of the first half, Barry Foley scored a much-needed point. The half-time score was 0-10 to 0-5 to Croagh-Kilfinny.

The second half began with Patrickswell on the back foot. Croagh-Kilfinny notched a brace of points within two minutes of the restart. Peter Harty’s free reduced the arrears, but the West Men experienced another purple patch and claimed five points in succession. The scoreboard in the 43rd minute displayed a deficit of 0-17 to 0-6. Peter Harty and Paul O’Brien scored points that stemmed the tide. Unfortunately Crogh-Kilfinny were rampant in the closing 15 minutes and accrued another 2 goals and 5 points without response. The final score was 2-22 to 0-8. Hard luck to the players and management. It was a magnificent season.
