JUNIOR B HURLERS: Patrickswell beat Doon in a gripping Premier Junior B County Final. In extremely wet and windy conditions, the ‘Well made a great start with six consecutive points (Nigel Foley 0-3, Seanie O’Brien, Kieran Long and Thomas O’Brien). Doon roared back into the contest with a goal and two points, before Nigel Foley’s point halted the charge. Doon surged again with five straight points. Thankfully Peter Harty scored a late point as Patrickswell reached half-time behind by 1-7 to 0-8.
Doon stretched their lead with a point at the start of the second half, but Patrickswell equalised with a trio of scores from Paudie Maher, Peter Harty and Nigel Foley. The remainder of the second half was a war of attrition. Nigel Foley was forced to equalise three times as the teams were inseparable at 0-14 to 1-11. It looked like another Nigel Foley point had decided the match in our favour, but Doon popped up to level before full-time. Twenty minutes of extra time followed.
In the fading light, Josh Carey started extra time with a valuable goal. He leaped higher than his marker and slipped the ball home. Seanie O’Brien increased the lead to four points at 1-16 to 1-12. Darragh Ahern and Nigel Foley cancelled out Doon points as the ‘Well stayed ahead. The East Men scored two more points and set up a grandstand finale at 1-18 to 1-16. Paudie Maher’s late point meant that our opponents needed a goal. Thankfully, Doon were restricted to a solitary point and Patrickswell clinched a 1-19 to 1-17 victory at dusk. Paddy Gardiner accepted the trophy as captain and Nigel Foley won Man of the Match.
