SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell made a winning start to the Championship after a hard fought win over Newcastle West. We raced into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead within ten minutes, aided by a strong breeze (Patrick Kirby, Diarmaid Byrnes, Jason Gillane 0-2 and Cian Lynch 0-2). The remainder of the first half was more competitive. After an exchange of four points each (John Kirby, Jason Gillane 0-2 and Patrick Kirby), Patrickswell enjoyed a purple patch that yielded four unanswered points (Jason Gillane 0-2, Cian Lynch and Diarmaid Byrnes). Just before half-time, Patrickswell were 0-14 to 0-5 ahead. Newcastle West secured two points before Jason Gillane ensured an interval score of 0-15 to 0-7.

Playing against a stiff wind, Patrickswell were reeled in by Newcastle West. In twenty minutes, John Kirby was the solitary response to eight points from our opponents. In the 50th minute, Patrickswell led narrowly by 0-16 and 0-15. The slump required an answer and it was delivered by Jason Gillane’s close range goal and points from John Kirby and Jason Gillane. Prospects were brighter at 1-18 to 0-15 with five minutes left. We closed out the match with points from Jason Gillane, Aaron Gillane and Hugh Maher to record an invaluable 1-21 to 0-21 win. The next match is on Saturday August 8 against Mungret at 5.00pm in Claughaun.

JUNIOR B HURLERS: The Junior B Championship began with late disappointment against Doon. Patrickswell led by 0-3 to 0-1 within five minutes (Peter Harty 0-2 and Conor Robinson), but we were pinned back by a Doon goal and point. Dayle McDonagh and Peter Harty accrued points, but Doon kept ahead by 1-6 to 0-5. Patrickswell levelled the match on 25 minutes after a spell of four unanswered points from Peter Harty, Darragh Ahern and Paudie Maher 0-2. Tom O’Brien hit the net and added a point to establish a 1-10 to 1-7 lead. However, Doon were ahead by 2-8 to 1-10 at half-time when they scored a goal and point.

The start of the second half was extremely low scoring. With about fifteen minutes left, Patrickswell led by 1-14 to 2-9 (Paudie Maher 0-2, Peter Harty and Darragh Ahern). Patrickswell were in the ascendancy when Tom O’Brien claimed his second goal to build a five-point lead. More points from Peter Harty and Darragh Ahern kept Doon at arm’s length at 2-16 to 2-12. Unfortunately, the East Men rampaged in the final phase – adding three goals and a point to Peter Harty’s lone reply. The result was a 5-13 to 2-17 reverse. The next match is on Sunday August 9 against Staker Wallace at 7.00pm in Fedamore.
