JUNIOR A HURLERS: There was bitter disappointment as Patrickswell were relegated by a very late Bruff goal in the playoff at Ballyagran. Favoured by a stiff breeze, the ‘Well built a 0-5 to 0-3 lead after fifteen minutes, thanks to Peter Harty, Sean Fitzgerald, Paudie Maher, Andrew Carroll and Billy Earls. We also edged the remainder of the first half to hold a 0-9 to 0-6 interval lead (Dayle McDonagh, Andrew Carroll and Paddy Gardiner).
In the second half, Patrickswell kept Bruff at arm’s length with six points apiece in 25 minutes (Andrew Carroll 0-4, Paudie Maher and Ross Bennis). With 55 minutes on the clock, we remained 0-15 to 0-12 ahead. Two consecutive points from Bruff set up the grand finale at 0-15 to 0-14. Tensions were high as Patrickswell defended resolutely and Bruff pressed hard. With virtually the last possession of the match, a Bruff forward eluded our defence and closed on goal. The option of notching an equalising point was foregone as he drove home the decisive goal. There were just thirty seconds after the restart and Bruff snatched a 1-14 to 0-15 win.
