SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell overcame a stern test from Monaleen to reach the County Championship semi-final. The ‘Well made a good start and found ourselves 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after five minutes (Kevin O’Brien, Aaron Gillane and Thomas O’Brien). However Monaleen responded with six unanswered points in six minutes to roar 0-7 to 0-3 ahead. A reaction was required and Patrickswell dominated the following ten minutes to cut the deficit to 0-9 to 0-7 in the 25th minute, thanks to Patrick Kirby 0-2, Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes. Despite playing into the breeze, we reached the interval with a 0-11 to 0-10 lead after Aaron Gillane struck three points and Kevin O’Brien scored the other.
The opening ten minutes of the second half saw an exchange of three points apiece (Patrick Kirby, Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes) to establish a scoreline of 0-14 to 0-13. Monaleen dominated until the 50th minute and they found themselves 0-17 to 0-15 ahead in the closing stages. Two points in a single minute from Mark Carmody seemed to deflate Monaleen as Patrickswell equalised at 0-17 all. Cian Lynch, Diarmaid Byrnes and Evan Fitzgerald put a further squeeze on Monaleen. As the match entered injury time, we were 0-20 to 0-17 ahead. Monaleen tried from a goal, but claimed only one point to ensure a Patrickswell victory. On Sunday October 13 at 1.00pm, Patrickswell face Doon in Kilmallock. Tickets must be purchased in advance on the Limerick GAA website.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell edged past Claughaun in the County Championship quarter-final on a rain-soaked afternoon. The pace of scoring in the first half was low, with Calvin Carroll’s four frees opening up a 0-4 to 0-3 lead by the 20th minute. Claughaun held Patrickswell scoreless for twelve minutes and went ahead by 0-6 to 0-4. There was plenty of action on the stroke of half-time as Shane Hannon scored a goal from close range and Calvin Carroll & Liam Fitzgerald added points. The ‘Well led by 1-6 to 0-7 at the break.
Once again, the first 15 minutes of the second half yielded few scores. Billy Earls, Calvin Carroll and Peter Harty notched points, but Claughaun closed the deficit to 1-9 to 0-11. Peter Harty’s goal gave Patrickswell some breathing space, but Claughaun were still only 2-9 to 0-13 behind with five minutes left. All nerves were settled when Patrickswell steamed ahead with six consecutive points in six minutes from Calvin Carroll 0-2, Peter Harty 0-2, David Woulfe and Shane Hannon. The result was a 2-15 to 0-13 win. The semi-final is against Monaleen in Rathbane on Saturday October 12 at 4.00pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance on the Limerick GAA website.
