SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell lost an epic City League semi-final against hosts Na Piarsaigh on penalties. The Caherdavin men raced into an early lead with three straight points before Calvin Carroll registered Patrickswell’s first point. Na Piarsaigh extended their lead to 0-8 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes, but Kevin O’Brien and Jonathan McMahon turned the tide with a pair of goals. Patrickswell were suddenly ahead by 2-5 to 0-9 in the 23rd minute. Na Piarsaigh had the better of the closing minutes of the first half and they reached half-time at just 0-13 to 2-6 ahead.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw both clubs hit four points apiece and Na Piarsaigh holding onto a narrow 0-17 to 2-10 lead. In a devastating five-minute spell, Patrickswell raced ahead with five points courtesy of Jason Gillane 0-2, John Kirby 0-2 and Calvin Carroll. There were ten minutes left and Patrickswell were 2-15 to 0-17 ahead. Unfortunately Na Piarsaigh showed their mettle and forced extra time with a dogged finish to the game. Their six points overshadowed Patrickswell’s two points and the sides were inseparable at 2-17 to 0-23.

Na Piarsaigh edged the first period of extra time. Their goal with two points exceeded Patrickswell’s haul of four points. At half-time in extra time, Na Piarsaigh led narrowly by 1-25 to 2-21. In the second period, both sides traded two points before Calvin Carroll nailed a last minute free to seal a 2-24 to 1-27 draw. Spectators gathered around one goalmouth to witness the unusual spectacle of a penalty shootout. Na Piarsaigh were more accurate and won the shootout by 4-3.

INTERCOUNTY HURLERS: Congratulations to Limerick and its Patrickswell contingent for securing another Munster Championship after the stiffest test from Clare.

CLUB LOTTO: The Club Lotto draw on Monday May 30 was not won. The numbers drawn were 6, 23, 25 and 32. The bonus number was 20. The €100 Lucky Dip was won by Bernard O’Riordan and the €20 prizes were claimed by Teresa Griffin, Theresa Considine, Kathleen Browne, Shane Cullinane and Jim Mulqueen. This week’s jackpot is €15,400.
